[ day 206 ] action :: open
[It’s very late at night in the prison, if anyone is still awake or out and about. Were anyone to pass through Sector 0 they might find an older gentleman in his Starfleet uniform sitting on a bench in the recreation area. He’s quiet and still, somewhat unassuming. He might even be mistaken for peaceful from far away. But were anyone to come closer, they’d find that he has somewhat of a perplexed look on his face, troubled or thoughtful perhaps. And his gaze is turned up to the top of the dome. Obviously he’s not as peaceful as it might initially seem.]

Thank you.

[She settles down, smoothing out her dress as she sits, and looks upwards.] It's a bit unsettling without stars. I'm quite unused to being so far removed from them. [There's more than a touch of nostalgia in her voice, for countless reasons.] Singing is a comfort to me in their absence.

[Another space traveler, it would seem. And this naturally inclines Jean-Luc to like her. She’s also taken the words right out of his mouth, or his mind if you will, so that of course he’s inclined to agree with her. And he does so with a nod as his gaze shifts upward again.] Implying that the stars themselves have their own voice with which they sing. Yes, I’m inclined to agree.

[It’s a moment later that he continues.] I take it you’ve experience with being among the stars?

[Lacus smiles in his direction, as if he were an old friend.] Yes, just so.

I was born in a space colony, very near Earth, and spent a good deal of time in space transit before I lived on Earth. But from either vantage, the stars were always there.

[It’s a familiar story in his time. He’s known several people who were raised on one colony or another. Even some on Federation space stations. He has to admit to himself that there’s always something comforting in the familiar. Of course, he’s only just met this woman, and doesn’t even know her name. But it’s her story that’s familiar, something that could not only come from his universe, but also from his time. And it’s the later that’s a rarity for him.

What catches his attention the most though, are the words ‘space transit’. That could mean any number of things.
] By space transit do you mean you transported people and/or cargo from one station to another?

[In fact, it does mean any number of things.] Initially, I traveled between the colonies performing as a singer. Then I performed ambassadorial functions between my colonies and Earth, once the war began. And when the war went badly, my crew and I were forced into combat.

[If she seems young to have done all that, it's a fair assessment. She's not a day over twenty, though if there was ever anyone worthy of being called an "old soul" it would be Lacus. Her tone is wistful enough to show that the experiences effected her deeply, but it's clear that she believes firmly in what she did.] They weren't all fond memories, but I do miss it.

You seem to have a particular interest in these matters. [She offers a serene smile, despite the heavy subject matter.]

Yes, at home I captain the flagship of Starfleet in the United Federation of Planets. The Enterprise is a galaxy class starship whose primary function is one of exploration.

[She does seem rather young to have lived through such things. But then he remembers his own longing for what he can only describe as 'something more' at such a young age. And now he was nowhere near young anymore. What makes him uncomfortable though, is the fact that a performer had been forced into combat. He's never been shy about putting his curiosity to words.]

I understand better than most that in wartime rules tend to change. But surely there was a military of some sort to fight rather than a transit ship. Perhaps you were caught in the crossfire? The definition of the wrong place at the wrong time?

Space exploration, how wonderful! That was one of the many achievements of the first Coordinator. We haven't progressed much beyond the solar system as yet, but the political tensions and wars prevented our technology being used for such pursuits. A United Federation of Plants likewise sounds to be an inspiring thing. My people have seen far too much war.

[But as painful as it all is, Lacus doesn't hesitate to speak of it frankly.]</small> My father commanded our military when Earth launched a nuclear attack on our colonies, beginning the war. My fame and political connections made me the ideal spokesperson for the Council. At first, I was sent on missions of peace. But then extremist views began to take hold on both sides of the war, and my father was unseated in favor of a man who shared those views -- who wanted to destroy Earth and everyone on it. I could not allow my name to be associated with that.

My role in the war was as a traitor to my homeworld. I stole their newest ship and enlisted help from those who believed as I did in order to stop both sides from destroying one another.

I'm afraid war is something that transcends all times, all worlds and all species -- the same battles with different faces. We've quit squabbling amongst ourselves in my time. But as with any exploration we seem to occasionally find ourselves in midst of the problems of others.

[Jean-Luc can obviously relate to her tale of swimming upstream in midst of deplorable situations. He'd gone against the Federations wishes several times in his career, anytime he thought they were running against what Jean-Luc thought was right.]

Bravery comes in all forms in midst of less than ideal circumstances. Amazing how good can come in the form of the incidental bout of anarchy.

[The definition makes her smile. She quite agrees with everything he's said.] We all do as we must.

Might I ask: what was it that turned the tide? That let the people of your time value peace in spite of their differences? I have my beliefs and hopes about what would work, but in the end our peace is a young and fragile one.

Oh it's quite simple really, considering all the little things humanity has squabbled over throughout time. All it took was one man experimenting with warp drive to catch the attention of the Vulcans. They initiated what is widely known on Earth as First Contact. It was the first official publicly and globally known contact between Humans and extraterrestrials. It is safe to devise that the knowledge that there was indeed more out there made our petty bickering seem... petty.

[He pauses, shifts in his seat.] Of course the change didn't happen overnight. It took time. But I do believe that that is what instigated it. Since then we've evolved and expanded and run into numerous different species. I myself have made first contact with twenty-seven different alien races in my time with the Federation.

I see. [Her words are more than conversational platitude, reflecting a deep, if young, understanding.] It is comforting to know such possibilities are in the future of my world, perhaps.

Do Coordinators exist in your universe? Genetically altered humans, like myself.

Oh there are always possibilities. All possibilities need are courageous people to carry them out, to do the right thing even against all odds. [As he had witnessed many times over when the Enterprise and its crew had worked itself out of a seemingly impossible situation. Jean-Luc had never been one to lie down and let others dictate the world for him. Rather, he preferred to barrel ahead and face things head on and in charge.

He considers her question for a moment.
] Perhaps we know them under s different name. There are numerous humanoid species we've encountered which carry the basic look of a human with only minor differences to differentiate between them. There are even some humanoids who look very much like humans who have abilities beyond that which we are capable of. Is this what you mean? Any altered genetics are a natural progression rather than forced.

[She shakes her head slightly.] Coordinators are intentionally created, at least the first generation was. My father's genes were specifically selected at the time of conception, which occurred in a laboratory. My birth was more what many would consider to be typical human procreation, but as my parents were both Coordinators, my genes are also enhanced. We are designed to have enhanced immunity, stamina, intelligence, strength and the like. Some say this gives us more potential, but I find myself unable to agree. A person's drive and effort matters more than their genes.

I'm afraid many people in my world saw the birth of Coordinators as a very unnatural thing, and many Coordinators in turn looked down on natural humans. It was a very sad time, one we have yet to truly progress past. Though we are trying, it is a tentative accord we have reached.

[Jean-Luc listens with interest, taking in all of this information about her world, and somewhat saddened by it. And yet, in spite of that sadness, there was also a certain amount of hope. There is always hope. He is once again reminded of the numerous times they had been outmanned and outgunned in a tense situation, and yet somehow come out of it alive. Even Lieutenant Barclay was an example of someone doing great things in spite of himself.] Yes, I would say that heart has quite a bit to do with potential, more so than anything else.

[He nods.] So this is the war, you speak of. Between Coordinators and humanity. I'm afraid such prejudices always exist no matter how we try to grow and evolve past them.

Mm, unfortunately. We can only hope that people will come to see that our differences are not so great. [But that would take time, and time isn't something she has to give so long as she's here.]

It is for that cause that I wish to return home. As the Chairmen of the colonies, my place is there. But I also wish for this place to be as much as home as it can be, so long as we must remain.

Oh, yes it is a sound decision to make the best of whatever situation one finds oneself in. And at times, it can be easier said than done. I am never adverse to trying though. Such is preferable to apathy in any case.

[He decides that he likes Lacus thus far. She has an intellect and distinguished demeanor about her that he can relate to.] My colleague had given me the idea to surround myself with familiar things. I'm afraid that nothing can rectify the absence of stars though.

Apathy is our greatest enemy in a place like this. Once they strip us of who we are, there would be little point in returning to our timelines. [They wouldn't be the same people anymore.]

What familiar things have you found, so far?
