...it feels weird to just take a house for your own, doesn't it? Even if nobody lived there before, or lives there now... I guess that's just how they designed it, though.

I wonder why?

[Action for Coordinatorhaus]

[Despite any misgivings, though, Kira's selected a new pad in Sector 3 for him, Lacus, et al. It's pretty nice, as far as things go, and he's exploring it to make sure he has the layout memorized.

He's also checking in to see how Lacus is holding up after her first night alone.]

Lacus... [He threads his fingers with hers.] That isn't what I asked.

You show the world a smile to keep their spirits high. You bear their burdens with your strength and a song. You don't have to do that right now.

I know. [And she does. She knows that Kira would accept whatever is in her heart even if it would break his. Try as she might, the words won't come.]

[The blue band encircling one slender wrist weighed her down those first hours, unfamiliar and distracting. It's already feeling lighter, escaping her notice for a moment at a time until the light hits it, and she'll glance down and fear the same fate will befall her most precious memories. The way Neil held her just a bit tighter then he had to. The smile he only showed her in private. The stars she sprinkled the dome with, just to see them shine in his eyes. Her promise to remain by his side -- now fulfilled.]

[Knowing that Kira had similar memories of her, of a them she'd only dreamed about, how could she tell him? To speak about her love for a man that drove Kira, her gentle Kira, to the point of lashing out -- she can't.]

[And neither can she admit the spark of hope within her, that maybe, once her grief has run its course and with her promise to Neil faithfully complete, with no war hanging over them, maybe... Kira would accept her, of course he would. But he would always wonder whether it was her pain that drove her to him, always glance over his shoulder for Neil's shadow.]

[No. Even if he accepts it, even if he knows it's coming, Lacus can't bear to speak the words that will cause him pain. Even if those words are I love you.]

[Being so far removed from Neil is a constant ache, but it's the wound from Kira being so close that's sharp and deep enough to start her tears.]

[He doesn't know why she's crying. Well no, that's a lie. He has several damn good ideas why she's crying. And there isn't a one of them that isn't a good reason for it.

But Kira doesn't care why she's crying. The emotional war between memories she has of a man he barely knew and memories she hasn't yet made that he holds close to his heart doesn't matter.

All that matters is that she is crying.

He gently tugs her close, into a soft embrace.]

[Lacus' tears never stretch on for long, there's no sobbing or other such theatrics. Even the indulgence she does allow herself in the way she clutches Kira as close as possible lasts only a few beats, and then the long sigh as she relaxes.]

[A few breaths later and she's tilting her head back to look up at him, tears already drying and a smile, soft but warm, touching her lips.]

Whatever burdens we must shoulder, we'll bear them together. [Even if she can't quite put words to it.]

[It's enough for him to be there with her when she needs it. That's all that matters right now.

He reaches up to softly brush rose-colored hair from her face, tucking a stray strand behind her ear, and nods.]
...yeah. That's right, we will.

You won't have to face them alone.

Mm. [She leans ever so slightly into the brush of his fingers, her smile growing by slow degrees. Being near him does hurt, but only in the way that a wound hurts as it heals.]

There's a great deal of good that can happen, in this new place. I hope we're able to see it through. [On both a wide scale and just within this new home of theirs.]

I'm sure we will be. The strength to make it happen is ours.

I'm just not sure where to start. *He's never been the organizing type.*

I think we should start right here. [She leans against him again, less for comfort this time and more just because he's here and she's grateful for that.] So long as we have a peaceful home, we can handle whatever comes.

[Hand running through soft pink hair.] It'd be nice if Miss Murrue or Mr. Waltfeld were here. They'd be able to make this a peaceful home for sure. [Kind of joking. They'd probably add all sorts of secret passages.]

[She smiles at the thought. Things would be easier with them around, for certain.] I'm sure they would. But we will manage just fine in the meantime, I'm sure.

Once I have time, I think we should take Sakura shopping for some things for her room. That should be the first place we decorate.

[He nods.] Right, I'm sure she'll appreciate it more than any of us might. That sort of thing is important when you're her age.

Uh, what sort of things does she like?

Sakura likes being helpful. I'm sure she'll want to do that more than select her own things.

The first time we met, I brought matching aprons for her and myself. She lit up with the most beautiful smile. [If Lacus looks and sounds like a proud parent, that's not too far from the truth.]

[And that smile is infectious. He leans a bit more against her.] Did the two of you cook together often, then? That sounds like it'd be fun to watch.

As often as we could. But you won't be watching, you'll be helping. [You can't say no to this face, can you? Thought not.]

I am. [smile!]

[But then turning a little more serious,]
There is something else I'd like your help with. I am concerned about the Defense Force members being unable to protect themselves. I think we're in a unique position to help with that.

Something portable and easy to use, something that would be useful if they had to disable a dangerous inmate. Something we can put together quickly and in batches. A taser of some sort was my initial thought, but something more effective might also be a good idea.

[Arming people might ordinarily be far from her mind, but not now. She owes it to the members to give them some means of self-defense after everything she's witnessed.]

[He's thinking, now. Give him a moment.] So, some sort of stunning tool... Athrun was always a lot better at making that sort of thing than I was. But it shouldn't be too hard, I don't think.

Or maybe something with bright lights and loud noises. That could disorient them.

It would have to be focused energy, able to target a single individual or small group. We can't risk harming bystanders. [Unfortunately, this is very different than fighting in space. Not so much elbow room to work with.]

[info]beamspams

Right, that's true. It'd have to be directed... I wonder if you could do that by some sort of focused beam, and... [He trails off kind of talking to himself.]

Mm, perhaps we could try a few things. But I prefer to get something out quickly, even if it's basic for now. We can always modify later versions.

Thank you, Kira. I know you must be confused as to why I'm so adamant about this. [She doesn't know if you want to hear it all, but if you do, she's ready to talk.]

[He's quite for a moment.] I'm not confused. Since it's you, you have your reasons. I'll always trust that.

But if you want to tell me, I'll listen.
