SUPERHERO MINI-EVENT SIGN-UP POST
Hello all you happy people, it's time to get the show on the road for the Superhero Mini-event that will occur on DAY 81. Signing up starts today and can continue during the event, but your character is not affected until you've signed up.
There are some rules for the event that have to be followed because there's a bit of complex things going on. Every "superpower," "mutation," or "error" that the characters get has to be approved by me though I'm going to be pretty lenient. Most people will get approved no problem. Others I may have to discuss things with. Read the rules and fill out the form in a comment at the end. Thanks.
How Big Bang Gas Works
Meta-gene = Recessive gene in all living things (bacteria even have it in canon, seriously) that reacts to extraordinary circumstances and causes them to change. In DC-verse it could be argued that every human who ends up with superpowers or some mutation has the gene and it's been "turned on" by one event or another.
Example: The Flash has super speed because he got chemicals dumped on him in an accident. The chemicals turned on the meta-gene and gave him powers. You could look at it as being similar to the X-gene in Marvel-verse, except the gene needs more than just puberty to wake it up.
Big Bang Gas = Chemical created by Alva Industries which trips the meta-gene causing a large variety of powers and mutations depending on who gets gassed with it. The powers/mutations appear random, but for the sake of boundaries, I will be going by the theory that they are connected to either the environment around the person who was affected by it or by their mental state. Some people in the series look like animals, others get mutated by the environment. And there are those who end up looking like monsters, too.
Because of how different people are and how varied the reactions to the gas are, it's not usual for people to end up with the same ability. Not IMPOSSIBLE, but not common. More than likely it would be similar, but with noticeable differences. Better descriptions of some of the powers/mutations people get in canon be found at the Static Shock wikipedia page.
The effects of the gas in Marina WILL NOT BE PERMANENT, because there won't be enough gas or prolonged exposure to keep it that way. And there will be no late bloomers for the exact same reasons. (Any other plotting in regards to the BBG and its effects post this event would have to be brought to me and the mods.)
Rules and Other Stuff
1. Only two people can have the exact same power.
And I don't mean this as "Character A and Character B can only have white wings, but Character C can have black." The only way that would work would be if Characters A and B got "angel" wings, while Character C got "demon wings" or something like that. If you want your character to have wings, that's okay, but just be creative about it! As shown in the picture further up, you can get wings by looking like a bird, too. Or have butterfly wings instead of angel wings. I'm sorry but the gas just is too random for too many people to have the same or too similar of an effect from it. With this it's "first come, first serve".
2. If you do not fill out the form and get approved, you cannot claim your character has been affected by the gas.
I need to approve whatever you're doing and I don't mind you arguing why it should work, because I want this to be fun for everyone. At the same time, it's much easier to keep track of everything if there is a list ahead of time of what powers/mutations will be showing up. In reverse, you DO NOT have to have your character affected. In canon, not everyone who was exposed was affected (and some who were died or turned into horrible puddles of goo, but no killing off characters during this event please?).
3. You cannot give your character more than one ability.
I know I probably don't need to say this, but I put it up there just to be safe and fair. Now should you do something to your character that would ICly explain more than one ability being part of a whole, I have no problem with it. Example: Should you turn your character into a bird-like creature, they could reasonably be able to both fly AND talk to birds. But that's as far as the leniency goes on this. And any doubling should be explained in detail when you fill out the form. Should I decide to only approve one of those abilities and not the other, I will tell you and explain my reasoning, or offer a compromise that would restrict your character in another way.
4. All Powers must have a basis in GENETICS.
They are caused by the gas affecting people's genes (the meta-gene particularly), not by the gas affecting magic/spiritual energy or anything else. Remember this when coming up with your character's ability. Also remember that your character will not just transform into anything. Should you want your character to be a cat, they will end up with cat-like features (possibly including ears, tail, reflexes, senses, etc). Nothing about the gas is "magic;" it's all science. At the same time, if your magic is GENETIC/BIOLOGICAL, then the gas could theoritically affect it in some way.
This also means that if your character already has a superpower/mutation/special genetic ability, that the gas can in turn mess with their ability. This is not a requirement, but something else that people can look at doing with their characters if they do not want them to get a second/third/nth superpower. Example: Kitty could have problems with phasing for the day or be stuck unable to unphase.
5. Any special powers/mutations inspired by things from the characters' own worlds will not be EXACT.
They will be similar to, but not exactly like anything from their home worlds unless there is a specific reason it would be. Example: Setsuna cannot turn into a gundam. But he might have the power to form a robotic-like armor around himself that he can use to fight in. Why? Because even based on their mental state, the gas will not act exactly as they would want it to. It will work similar or in correlation to their deepest wants/desires/fears/psychological issues, but not exactly. More like an "oh the irony of that" way than "that's all I've ever wanted" if you get what I mean?
Example: Richie wanted to be help his friend Virgil/Static fight crime and stop having to sit on the sidelines as the background mechanic/gadget inventor. Richie instead of getting super speed/strength/ability to fly or anything like that got SUPER BRAIN POWER. So he still makes the inventions, but also had the genius to create some he could use as weapons to fight crime himself. See the irony?
6. No godmoding.
I know we all try to avoid this as usual, but giving our characters superpowers can make it hard to keep in mind, so this is just a precautionary rule. No godmoding also means you cannot give your character the power to "kill someone with a thought" or anything like that. And if you decide you want your character to be able to control minds or read thoughts or anything like that, make you sure ask permission.
If you guys want to have fights/battles/etc, the Defense Force will no doubt also have more superpowered!members so please be open and communicate with them. We all want to have fun here. If there are any big problems, just comment on my Contact Post and I'll handle it or take it to the mods.
7. All powers are restricted.
Just like any powers/abilities in the prison. Using their new superpowers will tire your character(s) out and prolonged use may not only lead to exhaustion, but also the effects of the gas running out on your character faster.
Sorry for so many rules but I want to make sure everything is in writing and easy to understand. If you have any questions, just ask when you fill out the form!
Superpower Approval Form
Character Name: Who is getting gassed? Each character needs a separate comment.
Super Power/Mutation: How are they going to be affected? (Please be specific and detailed about how the power works, who it affects, what skills the power gives your character, etc, but too much and I'll be considering each part as a separate power/mutation).
Restrictions: Given some of these powers are really strong, how would you put some restrictions/limitations on your characters abilities?
Reasoning: Explain why and how this power/mutation would work for your character. (Also be specific and detailed! But only a small paragraph is needed).
Any last questions? Anything you want to know before the event starts that I haven't covered?
I really hope this gets to be a lot of fun for all of us!
