EVENT: The Cult Rises
[Early in the morning of September 25th, the Mandalus Morning News logo shows for a moment, then fades to show Gerald Corben, news anchor for MMN, sitting at his desk. His hair isn't perfect, and his glasses are crooked, as if he's been scrubbing at his face nervously.]
Natives and Honored Guests of Mandalus, I'm afraid I have some...troubling news. Not fifteen minutes ago, a video log was delivered to our production studio with the directions to show all of you as soon as possible. We here at Mandalus Morning News are not ones to deny the public what needs to be seen, so...without further ado....
[The image of Gerald fades, revealing the panicked, sweaty face of Emil Niles, the city's most recent leader. He's on his knees, trembling and muttering prayers to whatever diety will listen to him. Surrounding him are members of the cult of the Serpent. The one closest to Niles on his left has a sword strapped to his hip. The handle is a serpent twisted down to the hilt. Fitting, really. The man with the sword orders for Niles to stop his crying, none of his gods are listening. That just leads to Niles pleading with the man, begging him to let him go.]
Now, now, Emil. Is that any way for a leader to act in front of his people?
[The voice is new, coming from offscreen. In strides a woman, dressed in a cream colored suit, beautifully offsetting her caramel skintone.
She has the smile of someone who is in control, and her stride says as much as well.] How do you expect to lead and protect the people of this broken city if you are such a weak man?
[Niles stammers, begging her to let her go. She can have whatever she wants. The woman holds up a hand.] That is the difference between you and I, Emil. I am not broken. I can hold a position of leadership in this city and my brethern and I will usher in a new era for the people of this world, and the so-called Honored Guests. Because you are from Mandalus, Emil, I will give you a gift in parting as you step down from office. [As she speaks, she has a benevolent smile on her face. The hand that she still has raised in the air shifts to the left and the cult member with the sword draws his weapon and swiftly beheads Emil Niles.]
A quick death. [She says as his head bounces and rolls out of frame.] Remove this quickly, please. I don't want it to stain the floors. [She says to several of the soldiers. They work fast, getting the man's head and removing his body from the view of the camera. The woman turns to face the camera, still with that calm smile on her face.] Now, then. My name is Katheryn Morris. You may address me as Madam Morris when you refer to me. It is not Katheryn. It is not Kat. Nor Katy. Madam Morris. As a sign of respect for your new leader.
[Madam Morris moves around to the large, ornate desk and sits down.] People of Mandalus, change is coming. Very quickly, I might add. First off, a curfew for every citizen of Mandalus-- native or unwelcome guest both-- shall being immediately. Meaning tonight. Curfew is at 8:30 p.m. You have half an hour to return to your homes before we begin...enforcing the rule.
If you have any problems or comments, please, feel free to contact me. Though, I cannot promise you will care for my answers. But that is the burden of leadership. Doing what must be done for the greater good. And believe me, citizens, what we are doing is for the greater good.
[The video ends, and returns to Gerald Corben, who looks a bit sick to his stomach.] There...appears to have been a regime change today. What does it mean for the citizens of Mandalus and our Honored Guests? [He swallows hard.] More on this and other stories later.
