Whippersnapper awoke early, before dawn, and flew down to the yard of the beautiful country home he and his brother, Raggamuffin, were sharing with an elderly couple. The pixie smiled as he flew over their lawn, using pixie magic to shorten the grass to a nice even green carpet and make all of the weeds disappear. The Maguire’s knew they had pixies in their home, but they were still at the ‘is this real’ stage. Once he mowed their lawn, he hurried into the house and found a pair of Mr. Maguire’s socks left for darning and fixed them up perfectly, then he washed all of the windows, polished the silverware and waxed the floors. When he was finished, he quickly took a bath in the powder room sink, making sure to clean away all traces of himself.
After all the chores were done, Whip flew into the family room and smiled from ear to ear; there, by the hearth, sat a peach cobbler and a note, Fresh buttermilk in the fridge. The note said that and no more, which made Whip giggle; these people truly knew they had pixies, for if the note had said, for you or in payment or for all you do, he could not take it and he and Raggs just might have to leave and stop helping the Maguires altogether. It’s a pixie thing, you understand, and Whip didn’t want to leave this nice old couple or the community of ‘Woodland Pond at Manchester’. What luck indeed to find an elderly Irish couple living within miles of the university he would be attending; Luck of the Irish, Whip would say.
Taking the small pitcher of buttermilk and the peach cobbler, Whip hurried up to the attic and placed them next to the quilt where his younger brother still lay sleeping. Tousling his mop of black hair and kissing him on the cheek, Whip whispered, “Wake up, Sleeping Beauty, your Prince is here with gifts!”.
Whip smiled when Raggamuffin opened his big teal eyes, “There’s my Cricket! Did you sleep well? I have some peach cobbler and some cold, fresh buttermilk for you to break your fast. Sit up here now”, he fussed over the boy who, at 13, was just 4 years younger, and quite capable of feeding himself. “Once you’ve eaten, we need to get you a bath before the Maguires wake up, okay?”. He watched as Raggs drank some buttermilk and smiled widely with love for him, “Not to worry, Cricket, I’ve done the chores. You just eat”. He flew up to the attic window and back, “It’s a glorious day outside. What would you like to do? We can go pranking some of the people who haven’t been very nice to the Maguires and maybe grow human size and go shopping”, he grinned, “Perhaps you can buy a pretty dress. We’ll say it’s for yer girl”. Raggs loved to dress in women’s clothes and makeup and pretend he would marry his brother one day; he had been like that, in love with Whip, since he was very small. Whip was never bothered by it and always treated him with love and understanding. Scooping out a big spoon of cobbler, Whip took a bite, “Faith and Begorrah! Mrs. Maguire must have some fey blood in her veins! This cobbler is so good, it’s naughty!”. This was cause for Raggs to immediately scoop up another bite, making his older brother laugh heartily.
After Whip and Raggs had their day of pranking and shopping, Whip instructed his younger brother to head home while he checked out his new school. Flying in the door as someone opened it, Whip looked for a directory to find the art rooms. Growing from 6 inches to 6 ft, Whip walked the halls now and spoke to everyone he passed, though there weren’t many, due to the time of year. When he got to one of the sculpture rooms, he shaded his eyes to look in the window, fascinated with the works of art finished and half finished lining the walls…until a spoken word behind him nearly scared the points off of his ears.
