Dhivael ir-Elehu t’Vrenak was not a stranger to mandatory education. Her own planet required it just as much as the majority of Earth seemed to insist upon it. Intelligence was highly valued. Of course, it had begun at a younger age than those of the United States normally began, but it was much the same in its teaching students a variety of things.
However, at the age of sixteen, Rihannsu were permitted to specialize. Most knew where their areas of expertise lay, and Dhivael had known exactly what she’d wanted to do from the time she was nine years of age. Languages fascinated her, and she had a wonderful mind for absorbing them. Once she became fluent in a language, she could think in that language without the delay of translating things from her native language into the foreign one unless she became stuck on an unfamiliar word. Like any living being, she was fallible. However, her intellect was such that her failings were usually small or unnoticeable on her home planet.
Once she specialized in languages, she also took courses on proper communication and communication technology. These would permit her to earn her way onto a starship that would bring her to Earth. At this age, she also began to take courses on Earth, its people, and how to survive on its primitive surface.
Her studies absorbed far more time than normal United States schools seemed to take, but Earthlings often seemed less dedicated to knowledge than to their own personal enjoyment. It probably helped Dhivael that days on ch’Havran lasted longer than Earth days, mostly due to the two stars the planet orbited and the greater distance between the planet and its heat sources.
Dhivael’s studies were incredibly important to her. They were her life. Obtaining knowledge was her greatest desire, and she specifically wanted to learn about Earthlings. Perhaps she would be able to find links between Rihannsu and Earthlings at some point, but that wasn’t her specific purpose. Rihannsu were permitted to study Earthlings however they wished, but few really came to Earth. Many did not have an interest in the link between the famed starship wreck in this galaxy and how many humanoids looked much like those of Rihannsu both outwardly and internally though their mentalities were obviously different.
The Rihan intended to study in a school on Earth as well as to do field studies. However, she knew that schooling would help her with those field studies, so she chose Alden University for her courses. Money wasn’t difficult by which to come. While her people had a no-interference policy – which meant they vowed not boost the rate of technological advances – they were an intelligent people. They could find jobs despite their stoic demeanors, and they excelled in them.
By the time Dhivael had arrived, much money had already been accumulated, so she wasn’t required to have a job so long as she was in school, and they would offer her whatever finances she needed. Once she graduated, she would acquire a job in her field and make money that way, and she would repay the money she had used as well as continue to give money for their scientific studies of Earthlings.
As focused on her studies as she was, she felt it was important to meet all of her professors before she began taking their classes. This would hopefully give her a better understanding of the people as an instructor and how those people chose to teach. With how diverse a people these Earthlings were, it wasn’t uncommon for her to learn that one teacher would give lessons straight from a book while another wouldn’t use any books at all.
Dhivael preferred to be prepared. That was what brought her to the doorway of the office of a professor of whom she would be seeing a great deal when autumn came. She had dressed in dark grey slacks, sensible black heels, and a short-sleeved white blouse with deep blue, vertical pinstripes. Her hair hung past her shoulders in loose waves. Her make-up was very natural looking though it played up her features as she had seen many Earthlings wear it. Overall, her look was very composed and professional.
Her dark knuckles rapped lightly on the wooden door to the office. It was a custom she mimicked after seeing many Earthlings announce their presences this way. Apparently, it permitted the person behind the door to compose themselves or prepare themselves. It wasn’t a familiar custom for the Rihan, but she was trying to make a point of adopting Earthling customs in an effort to better understand their ways.
