House(s) used for Britin exterior and interior?
Hey, everyone! It was great seeing so many familiar names on the Members list. As a lot of you know, I'm brand-new to IJ and the QAF fandom.

I'm thrilled to see this community, because I'm rabidly obsessed with Justin's assbehind-the-scenes elements of TV shows and films.

I found the George Shickle estate here: http://www.parkwoodestate.com/html/auto.html?page_id=2&schild_id=32

Does anyone know where the exterior and interior of Britin was shot?

Very cool! I never knew that. Thank you so much for the link.

I wish I knew the answer about Britin for you. Perhaps someone else here does.

And thanks so much for posting! I was hoping someone besides me would start posting here and help get this comm going. Welcome!

George's estate IS cool! You are most welcome for the link.

I had a visceral reaction to your icon. It's lovely and full of sorrow. I can hear the whisper of snow falling on an empty palace--no one lives there.

I'm so new myself that I didn't realize your comm was new, also. Anything I can do to keep it going?

I haven't even touched on the innovative camera work that originated with QAF.

Hmm. While I agree it's lovely, I don't see it as sorrowful at all. Who's to say no one lives there? Peaceful, absolutely. Sorrowful? not to me.

As for the comm, yeah, it's pretty new. I started it because there was just nowhere appropriate here on IJ to discuss this kind of stuff.

As far as keeping it going, the best things you can do are read the profile and the earlier posts so you know the scope of the comm, then contribute posts, comment on others' posts, and encourage others to do so too.

I look forward to seeing/reading you around, both here and elsewhere!

"Who's to say no one lives there?"

Anyone and everyone! All Art is subject to individual interpretation. One person experiences peace and another person experiences sorrow. That's The Awesomesauce of Humanity.

I read the profile and the earlier posts and know the scope of the comm. I have contributed a post and commented on another's post.

Beyond that, I have no idea how to encourage others to participate.

Of course it's open to interpretation; you're absolutely right. I certainly didn't mean to imply that your reaction to it was any less valid than mine, but since yours seemed to sadden you, I was simply pointing that one of mine (and there are several) is very different and might make you feel better.

That is one of my favorite icons, because as you said, it is lovely. And I have a thing for both tudor houses and snow. Also, there are several others by the same icon maker -- one with B & J walking toward it in the snow, one with snow that's falling in smaller flakes, etc.

As for the comm, that's great and I couldn't ask for more, thanks! You're doing all the right stuff. So, welcome! Feel free to post again any time something in this realm crosses your mind that you'd like to ask about, make a poll about, point out, or discuss. And if you run into others wondering where to talk about such stuff, steer them over here. It's great to have you.

OK, this is really personal and off-topic. I'm trying to let myself feel and express instead of shutting down and closing off. I don't want to feel better right now. Your icon was comforting to me in my sadness.

I know of someone in fandom from a few years back who actually went to Britin and took pictures of it from the outside. It's definitely in Canada but I'm not sure specifically where. If I remember correctly the interior shots of Britin were actually shot in the house right beside Britin because there were renovations taking place or something. I'll go look for that very old post on another web site and see what info I can find.

This icon I'm using was made from one of the photos she took on her trip there.

Wow, I found this quicker than I thought I would! This is from her post:

This is "Britin". We had so much fun going to see the actual house. As you can see by the car in the drive way, the house is now occupied, but we still ventured out into the yard for pics. I am sure, if they could see us, they thought we were NUTS! lol You can click the image to see a larger version of it.

Fun little fact: When they found this house it was empty and they just knew that the outside was perfect. However, when they got into the house it was so dirty that there was no way they could shoot the interior scenes without a lot of major clean up. So instead of using the inside of this house, they used the inside of the house next door (which we could not get pics of).

I won't repost the photos she took during her trip since she specifically asked that they not be redistributed without her permission. She doesn't appear to be active in fandom any more so the chances of me getting in contact with her are slim.

OH. MY. GOD. Thank you so much for the pic and the info! I just KNEW the exterior and interior shots of Britin weren't the same house! You confirmed it for me.

Kudos to you for your respect for the photographer/author of the pix/text.

Specifically: My Jeopardy! level of geekified obsession with behind-the-scenes elements of TV shows and film. It's a knowledge and also an intuition.

Study your Britin icon. Watch ep. 511 again (if you can stomach the same). Where's the bay window that Justin looked out of? Since B/J fucked in the same room with the bay window, the fireplace/chimney's in the wrong place.

One could argue that B/J were in a more remote room in the house and Justin was looking out another window, but the scene clearly shows the foyer leading into the "great room" in which they fucked.

:) Well, you were right!

I've watched 511 dozens of times, and looked at photos of Britin pretty carefully. I totally agree that there's nothing there that convinces me that the internal shots ARE of the same house, but then, there's nothing there that definitely convinces me that they absolutely couldn't be either.

That great room is clearly on an end as it has windows on three sides.
So, I always presumed that if the inside shots were of the same house, then the great room we saw must either be on the far left side of the house (which is difficult for us to see) or more likely in a wing that projects off toward the back. In which case, the relevant chimney could be either the one on the far left or unseen from the front.

the scene clearly shows the foyer leading into the "great room" in which they fucked.
You think? Hmm. I don't see a foyer or front door shown in the indoor scenes, just a narrow staircase (that doesn't seem large enough to be the main one of such a house) just outside the great room (which probably leads to that balcony overlooking it).

So while none of that convinces me that those scenes absolutely couldn't have been shot in that house, it certainly wouldn't in any way have made me specifically think that they must have been either.

But knowing that it actually was shot elsewhere, now I'm dying to see more of that house!

(I'm obviously kind of a geek when it comes to this kind of stuff too. Lol.)

You're right. You said things I never thought about before. THAT is why I love discussing this geeky stuff.

Awesome! I always thought of Justin looking out the front window of Britin on the first floor. It never occurred to me that they were in another wing of Britin and that Justin was looking at a different view--perhaps from the back of the house and not on the first floor. A Tudor McMansion the size of Britin would probably have more than one staircase.

GEEKS RULE.

Lol, yes we do!

I was actually snooping around a "for sale" Tudor yesterday that looked to be half the size of Britin from the front, but surprised me (because I didn't think the lot was deep enough to have accommodated them) by having two unexpected wings perpendicular to the main house in the rear. One of them was a three car garage with a casement-windowed walkway above it that led to a small attached cottage-like structure on the far end. Sort of an in-laws house or something. Quite interesting.

Awww, Britin's too old, nicely designed, and well-constructed to be burdened with the icky McMansion moniker, don't you think?

It's official. I'm jealous and I don't do jealous. The closest I ever get to actually snooping around luxury homes is at http://www.sothebysrealty.com/en/home.aspx. I am obsessed with that site. So many obsessions, so little time.

*snorts at "icky"* I concede. Just because I live to make digs at Brian and icky ep. 512 doesn't mean I should take it out on Britin.

I'm sorry hon. But if it makes you feel any better, while there are a number of homes within a bit of a drive of there that could potentially make it into Sotheby's portfolio, I'm not sure I'd put the one I mentioned in that category despite my description. Given the size and condition of the house and the property (the plot's not much bigger than the house), and the location, I would put the sale price of the place at probably ~750K. Nowhere near the range of the amazing places Sotheby's usually deals in.

But yeah, it's one of the more interesting places I've seen in awhile. I had fun poking around. Sadly, as it's unoccupied there probably won't be any open houses, so I probably will never get to see the inside since I'm not willing to waste a realtor's time in this market.

When I read fanfic, I have to have visuals so I can see in my mind where the characters are living. So I do a lot of research about houses, furnishings, locations, etc.

I found this beyond AHHH-mazing house here http://www.dreamhomedesignusa.com/French%20country%20chateau%20Luxury%20castle%20real%20estate%20plan.htm. I thought you might enjoy it.

I especially love the scrolling iron work on the staircase railing and the study/library (all the warm, rich, polished wood).

Although I'm not posting pics, here is some of her commentary about Woody's. I thought you might enjoy it.

(She had pics placed throughout this commentary)
Ahh, Woody's. I tried to take several pics of the inside because some areas of the bar (which is huge by the way. I think it had 4 main rooms, each with their own bars)..back to the story, some parts of the bar were so familiar it was creepy. I didn't get to take a pic of the main bar (the one that would be familiar to everyone) because during the day that is the busiest bar and I felt odd taking pics of total strangers.
I can't remember if I posted this one, so here it is just in case. The outside of Woody's

The only bad part is it is hard to convey how "real" it was because the flash on the camera always seemed to change the atmosphere. But the stairs are dark just like they are in the show. The "no dicks allowed in this area" sign was posted on the women's restroom door, but I think it is more for looks than anything else because I never used the bathroom there when a man wasn't in one of the stalls next to me. I tried to go into the men's restroom, but all they had were urinals and I just have no idea how to work those. *grin*

The beer cooler with all the men at the top is a staple at each bar. The pic with the blue chairs didn't remind me of the show in any way, but I was facinated with these smoking pods/rooms that could be found just about everywhere so I had to take a pic.

This is a pic of the owner of Woody's and me. Do not ask me his name because I can not remember, but I will ask one of the friends I made there when I talk to them. He was very nice and bought me a pitcher of beer. I think he was a little freaked out to walk into his bar and have like 20 women sitting there drinking like a bunch of fish! lol
