Accidental voice post
[Muted beep of voice recording being activated, sound of the smart phone hitting the floor, the speaker jumping into the middle of a calm rant.]

--solutely preposterous. I've no doubt succumbed to the diseases permeating that infernal ship.

[Sound of muffled footsteps across the rug in the middle of the bedroom in the direction of the room's window.]

Captain Smythe had best have the doctor tend to my fever posthaste else I fear I may be lost forever.

My name's Reg.

Are you alright? Do you need a doctor?

[After a moment of finding and picking up the little device where the young voice is coming from... A resigned sigh.]

I'm to believe that this isn't a hallucination.

Who's there. Show yourself!

[Footfalls over towards the phone and then static as he picks it up roughly, not quite talking into the speaker.]

How are you speaking? I refuse to believe you're in this contraption.

I'm speaking with my mouth. And you have two choices - either I'm in the contraption or I'm a person in another area, holding an identical contraption that lets me speak through it.

[a very momentary pause]

So, you're new. Welcome.

It's not, if you assume it's real and you've just been kidnapped to weirdness central on another planet. But that's a big assumption to make, even though it's right.

On the plus, you're not dying of a fever? And our captors are kind of over the top with our rooms. And free food and TV. ... though I doubt you know what TV is.

It is the nicest jail I've ever seen... I suspect I'll have plenty of time to get used to the idea.

Tell me, what is this device we're speaking on?

It's a weird jail, too. We get free room and board. We can come and go as we please. We get fed three meals a day that are made by staff - because yes, there is a staff. The staff also cleans. But weird things happen.

It's called a 'cellular phone,' or 'cellphone' or 'phone' for short.

From my experience, you aren't just given things without expecting to do something in return... What is it our wardens expect of us?

Occasionally they will make really weird things happen, as if by magic. Sometimes to us. They never last, but they can be upsetting. It's kind of hard to explain without lots of stories.

[A thoughtful pause.]

Understandable, all things considered... I suppose a straight easy answer was too much to ask of anyone in these circumstances. .... Thank you, for what it's worth.

'course. And I can tell some stories once you've settled in, if you want. But it can be brain-melting on the first day.

I shall have to forge on, it seems many others before me have made such an adjustment. I only hope there's copious amounts of alcohol involved in the process.

Given the odd contraptions littering this room and the one adjacent, I suspect I too am from an "old fashioned" time.
