With the amount of female skin I've seen walking around this behemoth of a city, my attire should not be such an apparent distraction, nor is it an invitation. It's a bodice, not the Holy Fucking Grail.

It's probably less to do with the amount of skin, and more to do with the fact that it's a fashion that hasn't been seen in quite some time. Not that it's any excuse for them to bother you.

I'm used to stares. In my time odd as that still feels to say my manner of dress wasn't exactly the norm, either, however it was never this big of an issue.

What is a comicon? That word came up often.

It's an annual convention for fans to gather and attend events centered around popular media like comic books, television, literature, and movies. Apparently it is a popular trend to dress up as favourite characters for the event. I imagine people thought you were dressing up.

Characters.

They think I'm dressed as a character. What character?

I've no idea. But bodices and that type of dress are popular in the fantasy genre. It's possible they could think you are any number of characters.

I fail to understand why, but it's not first on the list of things I don't get about this place. Or time.

I suppose if I'm to stop causing collisions in the street and keep from breaking errant fingers, I should dress differently...

You wouldn't be the only one. I still have trouble with a lot of things myself. I'm Hermione, by the way. Hermione Granger.

You should dress however you feel comfortable. Don't let the small mindedness of a few people in the city dictate your actions.

Gretel. What, or I suppose when are you from?

I'm not so much concerned about my feelings, Miss. Granger, as I am the fact that I don't seem to be able to leave this place, as I would normally. A reputation is one thing, a reputation whilst being in a fishbowl is another.

I arrived here from about 15 years in the past. It was 1998 for me.

I take it you're not used to staying in one place for very long, then.

1730.

Either left or was run out; either way, I'm not used to the same bed and the same people. Except one.

Holy cricket! Now I feel a bit silly remarking on my fifteen years difference.

Well, you could always compromise and wear more modern clothing in the city, and your regular clothes here at the castle.

Coping is coping. The biggest problems I have with this time is the technology and lack of proper alcohol. And my brother

That would require spending money I don't have. Unless the stores here accept copper and silver, unlike the motorized rail-carriages, of which the conductors were unnecessarily rude.

I don't really drink, but I can lend a hand with the technology if you're ever in need of help.

Do you still have the money that was given to you on your arrival? Otherwise you might need to look into finding employment somewhere.

You could say I wasn't terribly in the habit until recently. My brother was the drinker.

Unfortunately most of that disappeared thanks to the aforementioned newly acquired habit. Far as employment, I've only ever done one thing, and I haven't determined if that's a necessity here.

Really.

If this little image next to your words is you, you certainly don't look like one. Of course, neither do I

I've done a bit of research into the matter since I arrived. With the variety of places that we all seem to arrive from, there are more than a few differences from place to place. Where I come from, for example, Witches and Wizards look the same as anyone else. We're born with our abilities and use a wand. We generally use our magic for good. If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them.

I suppose that makes sense. Where I come from, witches are only women, and most of them are heartless, soulless, sadistic killers of men, women, and especially children. And they're ugly as sin.

I grew up with fairy tales of evil witches in storybooks, so it's not an entirely unheard-of concept.

If you want to update your wardrobe on a cheaper budget, there's always thrift stores, but it still takes some cash.

Low budget, but that should be at least a few outfits worth. Just no jewelry, undergarments, or shoes. (And used undergarments = no, anyhow. Not sanitary. I'll pay or loan you cash for new if you need it.) I can recommend or take you to a few places if you want?

My undergarments have more material than what I've seen these women wearing entirely.

Is this your area of expertise?

Okay then.

Nope. My area of expertise is computers, which are like the thing you're typing on writing with only bigger and more complicated. But I like thrift stores and shop there sometimes, so I know my way around.

It's kind of you to offer. I suppose I have little choice but to adapt, before I go insane.

You're sure you don't mind?

Insanity is overrated. I don't mind. Just don't loudly comment how little some of the clothing is made up of in the store. People don't take too kindly to their style of dress being insulted and I'd rather have the option to go back to the stores.

We can go tomorrow if you want? I don't work weekends.

They certainly had no issue commenting on my state of dress, but I see your point.

Tomorrow is more than fine. You might want to know, I don't think I'm welcome on those carriages anymore.

Generally, the people in these sorts of shops are cooler and a bit more accepting than that. Don't let a few jerks get you down. (And comicon can be cool, actually, in theory.)

Do I want to know wh Why is that? And I have a car we can take so long as you'll buckle for the ride. (And I can show you how to do that. It's a safety harness, basically, that goes across one shoulder and down. It clips and unclips.)

I may have let my mood influence my reactions. It's been a fucking week.

Why? Let's just chalk that up to my mood as well. I imagine you mean one of the smaller carriages; you're the expert. I'll do what it takes.

I listened to my instinct and left Gertie in my room. Last thing I need is some idiot lawman shooting himself in the face with it. They do like to try and confiscate my things.
