Padmé had finally been able to relax enough to get some sleep. It had been a nap, and nothing too substantial, but that had been enough to matter to her. She was much more relaxed between the lack of death and destruction, those she cared about being guaranteed safe, the nap, and being to choose what she wanted to eat. Now, she was enjoying settling in for the night and holding hope for the first solid night's sleep in what seemed an eternity.

But she was distracted from the prospect of sleep by Anakin. She looked over at her husband curiously, smiling faintly. "Ani?"

Anakin was positioned lower than Padmé on the bed. He had an arm wrapped around a pillow, and he was using it to prop up his head. He was on his stomach, and if he didn't have his knees bent with his feet in the air, they would be hanging over the edge of the bottom of the bed.

His attention was focused on the part of Padmé's body the was level with his eyes. Her abdomen.

"Yes?" He said, distractedly, with a half smile. He then placed his free hand, fingers splayed, on her belly, but only ever so lightly so as not to put too much pressure.

Padmé smiled, continuing to watch her husband and wondering what he was finding so fascinating about her abdomen. She was 9 weeks along in her pregnancy. It was hardly like she was showing yet. Some people showed earlier than others, some later. But Padmé was her ever-normal thin at the present.

"What are you thinking about?" As if she couldn't guess.

Anakin closed his eyes and sighed deeply. He opened his mind to the Force and took in the essence of everything in that room. Crude matter of wood and fiber and stone were easy to sift out so that all that remained in his mind were the living, breathing beings. Sonya was on a chair by the fireplace. Padmé was next to him.

And there was that … something new, just mere centimeters – if that – below where his hand rested. He couldn’t yet call it a presence in the Force. The balance of its existence was so fragile; he could feel how the shift in any direction but forward would unravel everything that had happened thus far. It wasn’t strong, and only by the feeblest definition would he call it a cohesive entity. It was hardly defined more than that it was developing into something separate from the life around it. It was difficult to measure its rate of change from day to day, but when Anakin thought about what it felt like only a month previous, there were clear, perceptible differences.

“Us,” Anakin answered, and he meant more than just him and Padmé. “I can feel them… not like you, or me, or even Sonya, but…” He opened his eyes again, and the depth of his look added to his meaning. “I can feel what is there.”

Padmé readily grinned, showing pearly white teeth and bordering on laughter for what seemed the first time in ages. It may not have been the most normal conversation, but knowing Anakin it made sense.

"He or she still has a long while to go in there. Thirty-one weeks, about. It's a good thing, too, since we don't have a crib yet." Padmé added teasingly, reaching with one of her hands to put it over his. They were having such a chance with this child. Even if there had been a glimpse into the future, Padmé wasn't convinced that everything was set in stone. Having the fear of things the land could throw at them drug up, Padmé was ready for some time just enjoying the bliss with her husband.

Anakin smiled, he didn’t try to hide it, he knew he didn’t have to conceal his natural expressions as a result of his attachments around Padmé.

“That’s forever away,” he sulked, but his tone was hardly serious. To be serious about that would be beyond foolish, he was strong in the Force, but not strong enough to speed up gestation. And yet, even though thirty-one weeks seemed like a long time, it was frighteningly just a few heart beats away. There was so much he felt completely unprepared for. Would he even be ready when the day arrived?

“Do you want find out?” he asked. “Last time you didn’t want to know…” He trailed off, not meaning to bring up his last, failed attempt at being a father. “We could find out this time, if it’s a boy or a girl. Or-” the brevity returned to his expression, “both.” But what were the odds that Padmé would have twins… he couldn’t decide if the right way to end that thought was with ‘again’ or ‘for the first time’.

That wasn't even taking into consideration what Padmé would have done if the gestation was sped up. She was happy with the pregnancy taking as long as it should, at least now. That might change down the road but, for now, things were in a state of bliss and ideals about the future.

But Padmé wasn't thinking of such things. She was simply distracted by Anakin's smile and the warm feeling it caused inside of her.

"I don't know. It might be nice to know, but - a surprise is nice as well. And..." She paused when he mentioned both. Her eyes went wide for a moment, then she laughed. She knew it was possible, but she doubted it. Would they really have twins? "Not both. I mean - I would like to have more than one child, but - I'd like to know I can do a good job with one first."

"We need to start picking names. And I do want your opinion on some of the options." Padmé added, relaxing a bit as the idea of twins started to lessen in her mind.

“Do we?” Anakin said, raising his eyebrows.

The last time he was in this position they didn’t have the time to sit and talk about something as simple, yet as import, as the names for their children. They didn’t have much time together, in the first place, even though at the end of the war he was assigned to remain on Coruscant. He couldn’t be at Padmé apartment during the day, for fear he would be spotted by some senatorial aide or even just another senator. And by the time they saw each other in the evenings – if they could see each other in the evenings – he’d been so worn down by his time spent with Palpatine talking about anything with a hint of seriousness in it was a trigger for an argument. They’d learned to avoid those, avoid communicating completely those last few weeks.

“You picked out the names last time. What opinion could I give on the subject?”

It may have been an important subject, but Padmé's mind was muddled with feelings of giddiness and love. She wasn't completely in a serious mood. Anakin, somehow, managed to bring out her more relaxed side. It was easier to stop and breathe, to indulge and be silly, when in private with Anakin.

"You could tell me if you like the name options. I could pick something awful, after all." Padmé remarked with a small laugh, almost bordering on a giggle. "I could pick something like 'Bernard' or 'Magenta.'"

Anakin screwed up his face and stared at Padmé. “I don’t want to name them after a color.” He pulled back his hand so he could crawl up to be even with his wife. “And what does Bernard even mean?” he said as he settled down next to her.

The alliteration of Luke and Leia was pushing close to the boundaries of acceptable. Not that they were, individual, bad names, and Anakin could only say that one slightly negative thing, he just wanted to avoid something like that again.

“Tell me you aren’t seriously considering those names.”

"I have absolutely no idea. I just thought it was a horrible name." Padmé admitted with an unabashed smile when he moved up next to her. She was amused and, while she wanted to seriously consider names at some point, they had more than enough time. Anakin had pointed as much out, in a way.

"I'm not seriously considering any names yet. But you had an opinion." She pointed out, reaching over to run a few fingers through Anakin's hair.
