Who: Darcy Lewis, Regulus Black
What: Unidentified piggy spotting
When: January 21, 2013 - after dinner
Where: Castle grounds
Rating/Warnings: Low; will update if necessary
Status: In progress/Closed

After dinner, Darcy pulled her jacket on and headed outside. It was cold, but she was getting tired and she wanted something to wake her up. It was too early to turn in or else she would be up at the dim and dismal 3 AM. She couldn't think of anything she really wanted to be up at 3 AM for short of it randomly raining money, iPods, or both. And while some weird things had happened, she doubted she would have enough luck that such would happen.

Darcy started to wonder if she really did need to go sleep when she spotted a man walking a small pig on a leash. After a moment of watching, she decided that it was just a case of kind of weird things happening. Smiling, she crossed her arms and approached, asking, "Is that a boy or a girl?"

She had a number of other questions in mind too.

Regulus, as per his daily routine, was out walking his pig, in all Lord Atherol’s non-euphemistic, lime green jacketed glory. Regulus loved his pig – not that he would admit to anyone that he felt something as heartwarming as love, even for a pig – and though it was scathingly cold out, he was ever so attentive to Lord Atherol’s needs. One of which was a call of nature familiar to every living being that had a digestive system of some sort.

The moment Lord Atherol caught wind of a new person he was keen on discovering who that person was, despite Regulus’ very real desire to know no one. The small pig jovially dragged Regulus to converse, or deal, or whatever with this new person.

Once at her feet Lord Atherol quickly set about getting acquainted, which meant sniffing at her feet and making grunting noises.

“Is what a boy or a girl?” Regulus asked, he was feeling contrary to social niceties. He was just contrary in general.

Darcy leaned down to pet the top of the pig's head with her fuzzy gloves. She wasn't exactly the person who thought to ask before moving to pet someone else's dog, cat, or even pet pig. The simple fact was that the cute little grunting form in the jacket called out for attention.

"Since I'm fairly sure you're a boy, the pig in the lime green jacket." Darcy answered without missing a beat, smiling. "I don't suppose they make piggy booties, but I imagine it could venture past excessively cute if paired with a set."

Regulus peered down at this strange young woman that was petting his pig. It wasn’t enough that strangers landed in his own quarters, was he to meet all the strange people that lived in this castle?

Lord Atherol was simply basking in the attention the woman was paying him. He sat and then rose again, he stepped in place, and he grunted some more. Regulus rolled his eyes at this blatant pandering for attention. He showered Lord Atherol with affection and devotion. That should be enough.

“Lord Atherol,” Regulus said pointedly. “Doesn’t need booties. His hooves are perfectly capable of handling the terrain and weather. He needs the coat because his parts above the hooves are hardly equipped for the cold.” Regulus wasn’t being very cordial, he knew it. It irritated him that he thought to stop and think about his manners. He didn’t want to have to consider other’s feelings when conversing with them. He didn’t want to converse with others.

He cursed at himself inwardly.

“But,” he tried to be more civil. “The lime green does look good against his natural coloring.”

"Need doesn't mean might not enjoy. He seems to be enjoying rockin' that cute little coat, after all. You - I assume you? - did pick out a good color for him." Darcy was, unfortunately for Regulus, hard to phase when it came to potentially borderline snippy tones or statements directed her way. Working with Jane and Dr. Selvig wouldn't have been possible otherwise. "And not necessarily just because he needs it. Plenty of pets freak out when they have clothes put on them. It's what keeps YouTube relevant."

"What does he eat?" Darcy asked curiously, not taking the hint to quit dolling out attention on the little piglet and move on. "Has he ever eaten bacon?"

“I didn’t pick it out. Someone else did,” Regulus said. That was the truth; the need for a jacket to combat the colder weather had landed right at the time Severus had disappeared from the Land of Make Believe. The younger Regulus had picked up the responsibilities where the elder had failed during that time. Regulus had been grateful for his younger self at that time – not a small part owing to the fact the boy had given up annoying him for a period of time. And because the boy had looked after the animals in their care.

Regulus’ brow creased in horror at the mention of bacon. He tried to pull Lord Atherol away from the young woman, because he didn’t want her to negatively influence his pet in any way. “Why would you say such a thing?” he said as he struggled with a pig that was oblivious to human language and really just wanted attention, not to be reined in. Regulus settled for placing his hands over Lord Atherol’s ears.

“He can hear you.”

"Well, they have good taste." She paused at the look of horror and at the man putting his hands over the pig's ears. It took her a moment to contemplate why he might be so horrified.

"Animals eat other animals. Omnivores and carnivores! Does he - know what 'b-a-c-o-n' means?" Darcy looked more horrified at this sudden thought, giving the pig a suspicious stare. She knew that magic was real and so on, but somehow she was skeptical of a completely aware pig. "It's not like I was thinking he should eat b-word. I was thinking it'd be kind of wrong in a weird - human beliefs projected onto animals sort of way!"

“No,” Regulus said shortly, “But I’d rather he not find out. He’s an innocent pig.”

Just at that moment, the innocent pig wiggled free of Regulus’ hands and squirmed over to Darcy taking full advantage of the slack in the leash now available to him.

“He eats strictly the mix of ground mush I buy for him from a stock feed shop. And I don’t feed him his own kind,” he gave Darcy a disapproving stare. “I don’t have the kind of humor you seem to think I possess. Or you have, for that matter.”

He stood up and gathered the loose leash back in hand. He tugged on Lord Atherol to prompt the pig to move along. However, the pig was enjoying the attention from someone new far too much. Traitor, Regulus thought to himself.

“Oh, bloody-” he mumbled under his breath. “Do you want to stay out where it’ll freeze your tail off or do you want to go inside where you won’t get frostbite on your wigglybits?” He asked his much too friendly pet. And in a display that would surely make Darcy’s suspicion deepen, the pig looked at Regulus, grunted in a pathetic, irresolute way and then looked to where Regulus was pointing. Almost as if the pig understood what Regulus was asking, when in actuality Regulus had merely reminded him of something else the pig dearly wanted, to be inside where it was warm and was now forced to confront giving up attention for an equally pressing desire.

"But he can understand and learn English words? I never explained what the b-word meant." Darcy objected with a slight pout, not pointing out that the man had actually been the one to explain it. "And no one has the same sense of humor I do. I'm used to that. But I wouldn't find it funny to feed him b-word. Does he never try to snatch food? I'd imagine a pig would be more like a dog in that way."

She watched carefully when the pig reacted to where Regulus pointed. Darcy watched, interested. Even if she wasn't a scientist, she could appreciate weird stuff. Even without weird stuff, she could appreciate cute stuff... and the pig was cute.

"I'll quit petting him, if he shouldn't stay out too long?" She offered, not phased by the disapproving stare or tone of the other man. She wasn't apologizing with her own tone, nor did she appear (nor feel) any sense of regret for what she had said or asked. She also didn't want the pig to be in trouble with its owner, nor suffer because of her desire to pet it.

Regulus scowled at this strange girl who was surely trying to corrupt his innocent pig. Why else would be bring up bacon around a Lord Atherol. He didn’t go around asking if people ate other people.

“Lord Atherol is a well-mannered pig. He doesn’t beg for food. He doesn’t need to know what b-word is because he’ll never taste it.” Regulus wondered for a moment if he should have a talk with his younger self about this subject. He was sure Reg wouldn’t try something so uncouth, but the boy was fifteen after all.

“It’s cold out. Yes I want to get him inside. He has only this green coat.” Regulus didn’t know what to think of this girl who seemed unfazed by his cool demeanor. Usually people rose to the challenge his grumpiness presented with anger of their own. But it was like she didn’t even hear the sharpness in his tone. Who was this girl? She was definitely throwing Regulus off his game.

"Is that why the 'Lord' part is there? Because he's a refined piggy?" The terms 'refined' and 'piggy' didn't really go together, but neither did 'pig' and 'jacket.' Darcy could see evidence for herself that it worked spectacularly together. She didn't see any reason why 'refined' and 'piggy' didn't work for the situation. "And that doesn't answer if he can understand English or not. I know some pets are crazy smart. I was just asking."

"And okay." Darcy gave the pig one last pet before standing up to let him go, though she said (to Lord Atherol) as she did, "Later, Lord A. Better get inside before you and your owner freeze."

Darcy crossed her arms and moved to wander off, planning to walk around the castle grounds a little more. She wanted to wake herself up; just because others were being smart and going inside didn't mean it was quite time for her to retreat from the cold.
