Entry tags:ickle anakin skywalker, myka bering

Who: Ani the Younger and Myka (and R2, because when Ani has free time the droid is always with him – look, he has no friends his age, okay?)
What: Ani and R2 are testing out one of Ani’s robotic creations. Myka happens by.
When: Backdated to Sunday afternoon
Where: A random corridor
Rating/Warnings: Probably low, Ani really is a far cry from the evil he’ll later become back in his universe
Status: In progress/Closed

“Okay,” the tow-headed boy said in as much authority as his youthful voice could muster. R2-D2 rocked on his wheels in anticipation of the next instruction. “Make sure you record everything I say. Plus! Measure its flight path and the sensor feedbacks.” The droid toodled an affirmative sound and Ani nodded.

With a sigh weighted by the seriousness of experimentation, young Anakin set his mind fully to the task at hand. He pressed a button on the portable control pad in his hand, turning it on. The small robot just a meter away flashed red and green lights on its top, indicating it was receiving commands form the control pad. That was heartening and Anakin grinned. While he knew that it had been able to do that for a while now, it was still good to see the first steps on this afternoon of tests were proceeding well.

The gray-cased robot in front of him wasn’t much to look at. A cube set on swivel wheels; mainly it was just something to house the circuitry and inner components and its repulsorlifes. It was a step towards perfecting his grasp of the limited technology of this world and how to mix it with the knowledge from home.

“Okay test moving to the right.” He waited for R2 to confirm he was ready before entering the command for the robot to move to the right. When it did, the boy’s grin spread wider. He walked through all directions, dictating clearly to R2 what he was about to do each time and his thoughts about each successful procedure. Remote technology was hardly an unheard of thing, even in this world, but Anakin had built this robot complete from scratch, none of the pieces were spare droid parts like he used to be able to pick up on the tech levels of Coruscant. And checking everything now meant he could move forward towards other projects if all his tests worked today.

He took his droid creations very seriously. While the Force guided his every move, Master Tiin had been one of the few to encourage him to explore this Force-talent of his wholeheartedly, and to approach it not as a constant given, but one he should understand completely. And that meant understanding the scientific method, learning the math and science behind it all, documenting everything.

“Okay,” he said to his droid co-scientist. He looked over towards the balcony railing that stood against a two story drop down to an open landing below. They were both so caught up in their work they didn’t noticed they’d attracted the attention of someone further down the corridor.

“Should we see if the repulsorlifts work?”

Myka was avoiding returning to Helena's room for as long as she possibly could. Not quite ready to face the other woman just yet. The words that had been spoken not so easy to forgive and forget. For either of them. Helena would retreat back in to herself or do something drastic. Myka would resort to hiding in the library. Other than ice skating, being surrounded by books of all genres helped to calm her nerves and thoughts.

After Claudia had run in to her in the library, Myka had decided to find a new haunt. It seemed that she was bound to run in to her Warehouse family wherever she went. The fact that it was a large castle should have kept them from running into one another so often. But that wasn't the case. At every turn when she just wanted some alone time there one of them was. It also didn't help that they all lived on the same floor doors apart, save for Helena who was a floor below.

Wandering the castle seemed the best way to find somewhere else to go for peace and quiet. Since she'd been in the Land of Make Believe she hadn't found the time to truly explore. Sticking to the dining hall, kitchen, helena's room, hers on occasion and the library. There was so much more to be discovered. As she walked the corridors she began to think of ways in which she could approach Helena and truly make things right. Sooner or later they needed to have a talk about the fight and the proposal. And everything else that had happened since then.

When Myka turned down one of the corridors she heard voices ahead of her. At first glance she wondered who it was but then as they came into view she knew. When it came to television and movies, Myka knew that she was pretty ignorant. Books were far better and more entertaining than sitting and staring at a screen for an hour or more. With books your imagination could run wild creating images of the scenes you were reading. But the Star Wars films were among the few movies that she had seen. As such she was able to figure out that one of the corridors residents was R2. And wherever R2 was, Ani would be also. The young boy fiddling with another machine--no droid--must be the younger version of the older counterpart that Claudia had made friends with.

Walking closer she observed what they were doing for a few moments before speaking up. "Repulsorlifts?" On a subconscious level Myka knew that she should have announced her arrival with a greeting of some sort before diving right in to her questions. But, though she'd never admit to it, she was a little excited to be standing before Anakin pre-Darth Vader and R2.

Anakin looked up at the sound of the unfamiliar voice with wide eyes. Without needing to look at that control in his hands he turned off his test robot. He then lowered his hands cautiously to his sides. This was all pure reflex. Someone asking about his robotic creations from out of the blue hadn’t often boded well for him in the past, from Watto’s harsh punishments to the constant disapproval from his Masters.

He blinked a few times without saying anything, but when R2 tweeted a casual greeting to the woman Anakin visibly relaxed.

“A Repulsorlift is anti-gravity technology,” he said at last, after R2’s approval of the woman he saw no reason not to explain. “They are capable of lifting objects from the ground. They work within gravity wells because they need mass to push against. I, uh, I'm trying out a certain kind on my robot.”

At the response from the young Anakin a slight grimace appeared on her face. Announcing her presence should have been the first thing that she had done. Her arrival and out of the blue questioning seemed to have startled him and made him stop what he was doing. Quite like a child who was doing something wrong. It made her wonder whether or not he was supposed to be fiddling with the robot or be in the middle of the Castle corridor.

When R2 made a noise that she took as a greeting, Myka smiled and was relieved to notice that the young Anakin had relaxed as well. Had he not, she was uncertain how she would handle whatever happened otherwise. She gave R2 a little wave in response to the greeting unsure of how else to respond to the droid.

As he went into the explanation of what a Repulsorlift was she merely nodded. Myka understood the basic gist of what he had just explained. Not truly understanding when it came to the more complex science involved. But anti-gravity technology was basic and easy to understand at least in concept form. "Do you mind if I stay and watch?"

Anakin considered the woman for a moment while R2 warbled cheerfully at the woman. Her request was clearly not a question he was instinctively prepared to answer quickly. He knew he wasn’t doing anything wrong, but long experience had taught him to be cautious about curious grown-up strangers when it came to his mechanic creations. He knew she wasn’t Force-sensitive, so she couldn’t accuse him of breaking some aspect of the Code, but that didn’t mean she wholly approved of his activities.

He glanced at R2-D2 as if to consult the droid’s opinion on the matter, but he didn’t say anything. R2 chirped a few times, which Anakin seemed to understand. On Anakin’s part, it seemed to purely be a conversation all in his head. In the end, the boy decided, because R2 seemed to give the woman a pass that she was probably not a threat. The droid hadn’t failed him yet.

“No. You can stay,” he finally said, turning his head to look at her again. He blinked a few times more, his brow furrowing as he tried to work something out. “But… why do you want to stay?”

Myka watched as what she assumed was a conversation took place between Anakin and R2. There was no other way to describe it. While she couldn't understand what the little droid was saying, Anakin did. She only hoped that it was good and not something bad.

When he said that she could stay a smile appeared on her face. Myka would have had no problem leaving if he had said otherwise. She knew that being approached by a complete stranger was unsettling to most. Hell, even she found it unsettling at times. Her smile only slightly fell when he asked why she wanted to stay. Myka knew why she wanted to stay. It was because she was fascinated with being in front of R2 and Anakin. She'd never tell Pete about her fascination with Star Wars because she'd never hear the end of it. It was better that she kept of the facade of being a media ignorant bookworm when it came to him. But, Myka knew that not everyone was okay with finding out their life had been portrayed in a movie. An she had no idea whether or not he was privy to what happened later in his life. So figuring out a response to his question was not as instantaneous as any of her other responses. After a few moments she spoke up, "Would you accept that I'm curious as an answer? I've never seen anything like it before"

Anakin was fairly certain there was something the woman, whom he’d yet to connect to the woman he’d spoken to about dragons on the network, wasn’t telling him. This was an all too familiar sensation for him, in this world and back home. Adults could be like that, often. But this was to his advantage; he was well practiced in dealing with these kinds of situations. With a set expression on his face he accepted that he wouldn’t get any more details for now.

He nodded.

“Most people here haven’t,” he said. “The people that show up here seem to come from places where they haven’t discovered how to manipulate artificial gravity.” Anakin found that a bit odd. The technology was older than his mind could fathom for long periods of time, it was a steadfast feature of his home, even in the most backwater parts of the galaxy like Tatooine, to show up in a place that only had the most basic of ideas about the technology was almost incomprehensible.

He was feeling more comfortable around the woman now and because such he brought the control back up in front of him. He pressed the right button and the robot came back to life.

“But it’s not hard,” he pressed another button and something underneath the robot started to glow blue-white light. “If you know what you’re doing.”
