Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Olive, Galen – then later Harry D. and Luke
What: Olive and Galen are participating in that time honored rite of teenage passage: car crashes!
When: Late Monday evening
Where: Starts somewhere downtown and only gets better from there
Rating/Warnings: Umm, probably some swearing
Status: In progress/Closed

Everything settled back down, position right side up gyroscopically speaking, with that stomaching-dropping creaking sound of metal bending.

“Oh god!” were the first words out of Olive’s mouth that had shape and meaning beyond a sustained scream. And then she remembered to breathe because somewhere back where the car had skidded on the slick, summer rain damp surface of the road and had clipped the curb, setting in motion the series of events that ended with the car crumpled at the base of some park statue she’d either forgotten or lost the ability to draw in air.

“OH MY GOD!” It seemed to be the only words in her repertoire just then.

Slowly she started processing more than the deflating airbag and spider-webbed sight of the windshield in front of her. Limbs? Check – such a thing needed to be checked when assessing the damages of an accident near a Force-user. Head, check, still on her shoulders. Could she move? Check. So no broken neck, thank the stars above. Sore, check. But alive, thanks to the seatbelt locking her firmly in place, and that airbag, though she was sure she would have thoughts, and bruises about both later. Galen – She looked quickly to her left at her companion. Check.

“Oh my god?” This time a bit of a whimper laced her tone. She wanted to ask if he was alright but she just couldn’t form the words just then, her mind was stuck and needed some more time to process all that had just happened. So she questioned with the shocked look on her face, thinking maybe that was enough for right now.

Olive had a good knack of sensing when adults started smelling bullshit. They got that look in their eyes, and they paused, clearly playing back what they’d just heard over in their mind. The officer was doing that now. She made a split second decision. Galen didn’t have a license, and somehow she just knew it would go worse for both of them if that, coupled with the fact that he had been driving, came to light.

“Is that so?” the officer asked. His eyes were shifting back and forth between the two of them.

“Ya,” Olive said, her voice getting small. She wasn’t an actress, theater had never been something she was interested in, but her experience back home had taught her there were ways less than enlightened people expected other’s, especially girls, to behave. And she knew how to fake that behavior well. This man, fortunately for them, seemed to be one of those people, Olive could tell. And she was definitely someone who would take one for the team,. She swallowed and put on the act she knew would result in the least amount of trouble for the both of them. At least as far as the law was concerned. “I lost control of the car at the corner… ya. Guess I’m not really so great at driving a stick.” She hated that last part, because she wasn’t actually bad at a manual. But most of all she hoped Galen picked up the hint he shouldn’t take this moment to blab the truth.

There was a moment of silence as the officer looked at her, but then he dropped his eyes and returned to writing on that blasted pad.

Galen resisted the urge, very well he thought, to punch the officer in the face for doubting them. But right, Olive was suggesting they look contrite and the like. He could do that. He hoped. So he looked down as if he was ashamed of what had happened and shoved his hands into his pockets. He had seen people his age do that on the holos. He just hoped it was believable.

He even added in a meek sounding, "Sorry sir" to the officer. Now to hope the man bought it.

Olive notice what Galen was doing out of the corner of her eye, she heard him apologize, and that sparked within her the very difficult to repress urge to laugh. Something about her friend, the highly trained Force-user secret assassin weapon of The Darth Vader, looking contrite and sounding apologetic over something as menial as flipping a car was downright ridiculous. To keep from busting out in a big grin she looked over at the sad wreckage of her car, focused on the hissing of the broken engine as it cooled. That was almost not enough to quell the desire to laugh, but she was managing.

She knew Galen, being that highly trained Force-user he was, could probably tell she was teetering on the edge of amusement. Any moment now they were going to blow it.

Fortunately for them, just at that moment another squad car rolled up. Of course there would be another unit dispatched to handle this kind of accident. It gave Olive something to focus on rather than how her friend was acting.

“So what’s going to happen here,” the officer started saying and Olive whipped her attention back to him, having gained the much needed fortitude to carry on the charade. The officer then went into an explanation of the ticket he was issuing Olive, briefly going over the charges, reckless driving, causing an accident, and the others, and her date before a traffic judge to resolve the ticket. He tore the ticket off and handed it to Olive along with her license and other forms; she took it all without looking at him.

She was looking at the scribbles on the ticket, but the officer was still talking, something about a tow-truck (which Olive knew she’d be billed for later, there wasn’t any way the city would foot the bill for that one she knew). And then he brought up going down to the station, but Olive had been so focused on the ticket she missed the other officer’s name, “… will drive you both down to the station where you can call your parents to come pick you up.”

Right, parents, or in her and Galen’s case, the adults who’d taken it upon themselves to see to the proper care and upbringing of the castle’s wayward young adults.

Olive sighed as she stepped towards the newly arrived squad car, nodding to Galen to follow. Awesome.

Galen could tell his actions were amusing Olive but he didn't let it show on his face. Instead he kept staring at the ground, listening to the officers. Though when he heard that they'd be going to the station, his head whipped up and he frowned. He was about to ask why but closed his mouth. He wasn't sure how the law here ran so it was best to just agree along with things. That's what Olive was advising at least.

At the mention of parents though, Galen frowned and shot a look at Olive. They didn't have parents. At least he didn't. His parents were dead. Though a few had taken it upon themselves to look after him. Luke and Obi Wan really. He supposed he could call Luke. He seemed more...laid back about things than Obi Wan.

But for now he followed Olive to the car, grumbling something unintelligible.

Olive climbed in and settled back for a car ride of ultimate awkwardness. She’d never been in the back of a squad car and she could honestly say this experience didn’t leave her wanting for another go at it. It was silent and full of looks that couldn’t quite convey all that was meant, though she was sure she understood the glare of the officer she caught every once in a while in the rear-view mirror.

The station was a mess of inactivity this late at night. Few staff members were still on duty at this hour, but desks were piled high with government-efficient stacks of work waiting to be processed that no one this late was willing to approach. Clearly this was as well-run a system as all government branches were. Olive couldn’t exactly blame them when all she wanted to do was head home herself.

They were directed towards the benches and phones, Olive waited on the bench so Galen could go first. Then it was her turn. She found she wasn’t so nervous, really. Or maybe she was trying to convince herself of that, thinking how much trouble could they really be in, accidents happened to everyone. Right? Harry wouldn’t be so mad, right? She couldn’t tell over the phone.

“Who did you call?” she asked Galen when she sat back down. In her opinion this would be about five times worse if he’d called Obi-Wan. Something about that man’s intensity being directed at them in a negative way wasn’t exactly appealing.

Galen ignored the confines of the car as they were driven to the station. He seemed, for all outwordly appearances unphased that he was in the back of a police car. Once at the station he moved to the phone and recalled Luke's number. He kept it as vague as possible, just telling him that there had been a minor incident with the local law and he had to call someone he considered a guardian given he was only seventeen. That done he moved to the bench as Olive made her own call.

Hearing what she asked, he shrugged. "Luke. He seems more mellow than Obi Wan." Though he suspected Obi Wan would no doubt find out somehow.

“You know,” she smiled, “I have to agree with you on that one. Less chance of limb dismemberment for sure.”

Great, now all they had to do was wait.

She paused for a bit. She focused on folding the ticket in her hand, pressing the crease precisely. She’d forgotten what it said already, but she didn’t want to look at it again. When it was the right size she put it in her pocket along with her license, registration, and insurance card. So much for those documents.

“I’m not mad at you,” she said at last. “I mean, I’m mad that my car is now more an inedible pretzel than a means of transportation,” she wondered if one of the magic-types could make the thing mobile with some kind of spell, but that wasn’t where she was going with this. “But I’m not mad at you.”

Galen shrugged some at her words. "I doubt Obi Wan would have done that. But I could foresee all the lectures for the next decade if he found out. Luke seemed the safer choice," he said.

When she spoke about her car, he looked down, shame coloring his cheeks red. "I'm sorry about that," he mumbled. "I thought I had the steering under control but that wet spot... I'm not use to vehicles having wheels."

Olive smiled some more at his insistence on Obi-Wan’s character. “You should ask him sometime, how many limbs he’s claimed throughout his Jedi career.” Olive was sure Galen was in for those lectures anyways. Jedi Masters were good at sussing out information you didn’t want them to know (unless you were Darth Sidious and hiding plans for galactic domination, but she supposed every story had to have its plot holes). Obi-Wan was going to find out about this sooner or later.

“Based on the accident rate of just about anywhere on Earth, I would say most Earthlings aren’t used to vehicles with wheels either.” She bumped her shoulder into his to break the gloominess. “That car was destined to be road kill, if it wasn’t you, it would have been me, if it wasn’t me it would have been the next teenager to buy it. But," she added, giving a knowing look, "you are going to help me with this ticket.”

Harry and Luke had been called individually, but had met in the courtyard and come together in Luke's still barely working Landspeeder, which was large enough to fit them all.

Though they had not spoken much, they had a shared air of resignation and worry, and when they piled out at the police station, each was looking or a particular head of hair, and a particular face to be okay, and not hurt. Both had to ask several; questions and Harry and Luke looked at each other, then at the man asking them, and smiled a little.

Several minutes later, they were being led to their charges. Harry move into the fore, seeing Olive, his legs eating up more room. "Olive?"

Luke moved slower, sending his senses out to assess Galen's condition and mood and hoping the young man was okay.

Olive saw them first, heads above the few people milling about the lobby, people in custody being processed, and staff trying to process everything and everyone. Seeing them made her sober up, the small surge of gaiety talking to Galen about statistical crash rates back on Earth dissipated the moment she caught the measured looks on the faces of Harry and Luke.

“Time for phase two of the evening,” she mumbled to Galen.

She stood up when Harry approached. “The good news is we’re alive and intact.” She tried a tentative half smile, but it probably didn’t ease the tension building between the four.

Harry smiled and reached for her, and pulled her into a hug, holding her tight for a long moment. He held her and took a deep breath then slowly released her, then fixed her with a Look. "Explaining to do, you have some."

The Yoda-esqueness of it might be a signal she isn't in that much trouble, however.

Olive appreciated the hug but she didn’t know how much she’d needed one until Harry was actually giving her one. She’d been in a car accident for Christ’s sake, her nerves were little more than frayed ends by this point, and she was just about down to fumes. The hug was like someone recharging her batteries, not to full, but enough so she could make it back to where she felt she safe again.

She smiled, catching that Harry wasn’t leading in her into a trap in asking for an explanation. “It’s quite the tale with the right number of twists to build suspense. It was a physics lesson in learning how traction plays a role in countering centripetal forces.” She scrunched up her face then, “We crashed my car…” and then her expression fell to something that acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. “Can we talk more somewhere less authoritarian?”

Harry smiled back, glad she seemed to be doing better and trying to reassure her. While he was a little annoyed she had crashed her car, it was more about it having happened than any upset at her.

Harry nodded as she spoke, then stopped."Yeah. We'll pick up pizza on the way home and get you back to the castle for some less..." he waved his hand around them. "...weird conversation." He did not like police stations himself. "How does that sound?"

Less weird, eh? Olive wasn’t too sure how she was going to explain she’d lied to a cop. It had made so much more sense in her head when she’d confessed it to the officer. Galen didn’t have a license; a ticket issued to him would have come with more severe charges, a criminal record. Minor charges to be sure, but still something that would hang around for a long time. Olive, the one with the license, on the other hand, just got the more severe traffic violation. She knew how these things worked. But now, faced with the prospect of a disapproving stare from an adult whose guidance and good opinion she valued, maybe that wasn’t such a good choice?

She would find out.

She nodded, though truth be told she wasn’t sure how hungry she was. But the gesture was greatly appreciated, and she was willing to force herself to down something. It might help calm her nerves actually.

“Pizza it is. But no caffeinated beverage for me. Or wait, should I be drinking something that will keep me awake for like, what, eight hours, in case I have a concussion?”

Harry didn't like authority, and there had been few cops he even liked, Murphy being the best of them, Right now, he felt like he had to escort her from enemy territory. And it was weird, but that felt normal. It reminded him of the old days, in a way.

"No. Luke will check you on the way home, or Galen, if he has the talent. Some Force wielded can heal and sense health type energies." Harry waved his hand at her head vaguely.

"Come on. Let's go see if they are ready to blow this popstand."

Galen had been half paying attention to the Force. But the moment Luke entered the precinct, Galen let his mentor sense how he was. A few bumps and bruises, some cuts, but it was clear that Galen wasn't bothered in the least by his state. As he had told Olive, he had endured far worse than what the crash had given him.

Watching as Olive went to the man that must be the Harry she called, Galen waited a beat before he rose smoothly to his feet and moved to Luke. Years of training with Vader, of having it beaten into him, he lowered his head. He marked it as a good thing that he didn't fully drop to his knees like he would have if Vader had been there.

"Luke," he greeted, his voice soft.

Luke reached out and lifted the other man's chin with one finger, gently. No anger was there and he was open in the Force. Only worry was there and sorrow he had not been there to help.

"Are you okay? Can you tell me what happened?"

Galen lifted his head at the touch, slightly surprised at the gentleness. It was clear he wasn't use to such actions in people who taught him or were older than he was. Shifting a bit, he wiped some dried blood from his chin.

"I'm fine, I've had worse," he said, wishing he knew what languages Luke could speak. He didn't want to say exactly what had happened given they were still in a police station and Olive had essentially lied to the officer about who had been driving.

"We were driving in Olive's car, hit a slick spot on the road and control of the car was lost and we crashed." The truth, but it was a vague truth. He'd tell Luke the actual truth when they were alone. He owed it to the older man.

Luke nodded, senses stroking over the other to feel his condition and he nodded. As he felt that unease and both the truth and not truth of it, he nodded again. "We can talk about that more later."

He glanced around then back at Galen. "As long as you two are alright, then I'm glad. The car and the damages can be a thought for another time. One we can discuss while sparring once you are completely healed."

Galen was grateful Luke wasn't pressing the issue of the whole 'not quite the truth' answer. Galen knew that Luke probably sensed more than what he was telling the older man but still, he seemed very laid back and not too upset. At least for now.

"Later," he agreed. As Luke spoke of the car and damages he nodded some. Though when he mentioned being completely healed before sparring again, he gave a slight smirk. "I've fought in far worse condition than I'm in now," he returned. He wasn't bragging, it was the simple truth.

Luke smiled in return. Good, Galen retained his spirit. It had not been crushed by this. Sometimes trauma did that.

He glanced around.

"Then we can start sparring in the morning and discussing this in more detail. But you should have food and a good night's sleep before that. Whether or not you've been through a hundred battles, you still had a shock, and that's never good for the system."

He glanced toward where Harry and Olive were. "How is your companion?"

Galen resisted the urge to roll his eyes some at Luke's words, oblivious at how very much like a teenager that would make him. He was use to shock. But he stayed silent and just gave a nod at Luke's words of when they'd spar next.

When Luke glanced to Harry and Olive, Galen followed and shrugged. "She seems okay but I think it's the shock from making her be too upset." That was as much as he could figure at least. "At least for the moment." He gave another shrug. "She seems tough though."

"Good. I'll take a look." He glanced at Galan. "Do you have the talent of life scan, and were you ever taught how to use the Force to scan someone a little more deeply? I'm nowhere as good as most healers, but I learned a little along the way. If you like, I'll show you what I know there, too."

He had a lot of flaws, and he was hoping to pass only strengths on to Galen.

"I'm glad you're both okay."

About then. Harry led Olive back to them, and nodded. "Let's get out of here. I thought we could pick up pizzas on the way back, so everyone can have a bite to eat, and just go home." Or the closest thing to it.

Harry's eyes turned to Galen and he smiled. "Are you okay?" While Galen wasn't his charge, he always looked out.

Olive followed behind Harry, grateful for someone to take the reins. She nodded her agreement to Harry's plan. While she might not be hungry, she wasn't about to argue with the adults who were willing to take her away from the police station without so much as an angry scowl. She could down a few slices for that alone. And

"I'm ready to be placated into recounting our night of daring adventure." She forced a smile mostly for Galen, a reassurance that this wasn't a dangerous suggestion to fight against.
