Despite his somewhat careful, detached way with Tom over the network, Hal was glad to see the younger man. He liked familiarity, and more importantly he liked Tom. Which he shouldn't, because he was uncouth and a bit of an idiot at times, but there it was. He had been reading the only decent broadsheet newspaper that seemed to be available in the castle when the all-too-familiar voice appeared on his phone, and soon he was folding it up, tucking it under his arm, and padding towards the door.

Pulling it open, Hal blinked out at the young man stood by the other open doorway. If he was honest, he was still trying to catch up on what Tom had told him. Most importantly, despite the arrival of a girl and Cutler into his life, his apparent slip off the wagon. If he really was detoxing back home (Which was a horribly unplesant experience at the best of times, let alone after 55 years), he supposed he must look a good sight better than he did the last time Tom had saw him. He wasn't completely sure he could say the same to him.

"You really don't have to yell, you know."

"What?" Tom said in shock, as he turned his wide eyes on Hal. Why would he possibly think he had anything to do with Eve's death? Well, there was that one time when he'd caught Hal vamped out at her cradle-side but that had been weeks ago. Then again, Hal did come from weeks ago, didn't he? "No, it were Annie. S'bout the prophecy. We got it wrong and Eve had to die to save the world, or sommat. Well, really, it were all of us. I built the bomb, you took it to 'em and then Annie blew it. Killed all them old ones and Baby Eve, too." He sighed heavily, his head sinking into his hands again.

"Right."

Hal went very quiet for a few minutes, silently processing what he'd been told without any outward signs of whatever was going on inside his head. Eve had to die to save the world... What kind of prophecy was that? He felt a self-conscious itching around the burn mark on his arm, but dismissed it. Hal pressed his lips together into a harsh line, looking thoughtfully back at Tom, who had his head in his hands.

Taking a deep breath, Hal reached forward and awkwardly patted Tom's shoulder a few times. At least he didn't say 'there there'.

"But the world got saved?" he offered. "That's... a good thing."

It was just a small thing, but Tom took so much comfort from that touch. He sighed heavily and nodded his head. Funny how saving the world didn't mean it didn't still hurt like hell to have lost Annie and Eve. What would George say if he knew? He'd promised him, promised he'd take care of Eve and he'd failed.

"Try not to think about it, to be honest," he said. "We got our work cut out for us, helping you go clean, so been focusing on that."
