You were probably more correct than you even thought. I haven't been around 'people' - human people, for many hundreds of years. Add in that English is not my first language by any means, and I sometimes am completely lost about what is going on. It seems I also can have problems getting my own point across as well.

It's all right, Selene. I understand. But you're not the first person I've met that isn't so good with humans, and I'm sure you won't be the last. Don't worry about it.

What is your first language?

I appreciate your tolerance.

I was born in the Kingdom of Hungary and spoke that language first.

No problem. You remind me of one of my crewmates back home, in that respect.

Hungary? Huh. I don't think I've ever met anyone from Hungary.

You have seen so much more of the universe than I. It can be.difficult for my kind to travel much. Until recently, the sun was fatal to me.

Since the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungary has faded into relative obscurity. Many in my time could not even point to it on a map.

Where are you from, originally?

The universe isn't without its price. There's some terrifying stuff out there, and a lot of it wants to kill us.

Man. I can't imagine not being able to see the sun. I mean, I can, since there's no "sunlight" in space, but to have it be fatal... I'm sorry.

I'm from the New Boston Megatropolis. I grew up on the streets there.

It may be a dangerous universe, but at least you have been able to see some of it.

As we came to understand the science of things, we discovered it was the ultraviolet part of sunlight which killed the vampire strain of the virus. Why it didn't affect the lycan strain in a similar fashion, we still don't know. But the pure Corvinus strain which I was recently given seems to have taken care of that problem. Now I am able to enjoy the sunlight, as well as coffee and chocolate.

I was only able to visit the United States once. I spent several years in New Orleans helping them with a lycan problem.

Fixing a virus with another virus. Huh. You'd think that would compound the problem rather than fix it.

New Orleans probably doesn't exist anymore as you knew it, I'm afraid. Flooding made the original city pretty much uninhabitable, so they used the remaining structures to build a "floating" city. It was one of the first. I've never been, though. I went off-world at eighteen and I haven't been back since.

It seems the pure strain overrides most of the mutated vampire strain.

If you have looked at the stars, you are still not on Earth. What is it like, your universe?

It's huge. Bigger than you could ever imagine. We've only managed to get to the edge of the Milky Way and there's still so much that hasn't been explored, even in our own galaxy. It's dangerous. There's a lot of aliens that hate my kind and think that wiping us out is the best solution. It scares the hell out of me sometimes, that if I die, I'm not going to be missed in the grander scheme of the universe.

Yet it's still the most beautiful goddamn place I've ever seen.

It sounds like the sort of place I could find a home one day. And from what you said there is more tolerance for differences?

Tell me about the service you are a member of, if you don't mind.
