In Malia’s defense, she hadn’t meant to make the substitute teacher upset. She’d merely needed to use the bathroom and hadn’t understood why she’d been denied being allowed to go. It seemed to her that unless he wanted an unfortunate and completely avoidable accident to happen in the classroom, he should just let her go. So she’d gotten up and walked out despite his protests. Upon returning she’d been greeted with detention after school and a trip to the office.
Which was probably for the best, considering Malia had been fairly restless since she’d woken up. That never lent itself to productive days free from disruptions in class, and as she’d already gotten herself on the bad side of this particular sub, it was probably for the best she not be in his classroom for the remainder of the period. Shooting him one last glare, Malia made her way slowly to the office. She wasn’t in a rush, she had a pass, and honestly didn’t care if she got in more trouble for not arriving in a timely manner.
By the time she did, Malia was halfway tempted to just walk off campus. Though she couldn’t pinpoint what had caused her to wake in such a poor mood, the mere thought of sitting through more classes just made her feel even more restless and on edge. It wasn’t even that anyone had even been particularly rude or excluding since the new year had started. It was just… school. And school in general made her anxious, but the thought of having to explain to her dad why she’d left without permission made her enter the office and hand her slip of paper to the receptionist.
Malia hugged her backpack to her chest and looked at the only other girl waiting. She wasn’t familiar to her, looked like a freshman, smelled like a nervous wreck, and was avoiding eye contact now that she’d noticed Malia watching her. Which did nothing to stop her from keeping her gaze locked on the girl for several more seconds, her nose assessing her as she took in various aspects of her appearance until Malia decided she wasn’t really all that interesting and directed her attention elsewhere while she waited for the counselor to come get her.
