Theresa & Vin
LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY perapsis)
WHO: Theresa Yaxley and Vin Viridian
WHEN: Sunday afternoon
WHERE: The Library
WHAT: Theresa was supposed to tutor someone, and they didn't show so she's got a few hours to kill until supper.
STATUS: Unfinished.
Theresa looked at her small pocket watch and sighed lightly, of course she'd set aside this afternoon to tutor someone and they didn't show. Of course, it wasn't like she'd be doing anything other than studying herself, and tutoring was completely voluntary. It would have been nice though, if they'd let her know so she could have brought her own books to work on revision and essays, rather than be waiting around like a prat for nothing. Finally, Theresa got up, leaving her bag and parchments on the table to hold her spot, and went to go find some text books to work on. Of course all the ones for her history essay had to be on the top shelf.
It normally wouldn't be a problem, but she'd left her wand in her bag and someone had absconded with the step ladder that usually belonged in this section. Theresa huffed and glanced around to see if anyone was watching before stepping on the bottom shelf and reaching up as far as she could (which wasn't very high due to her petite stature). She had to stand on her tip toes for the tips of her fingers to even skim the bottom edge of the book spines. Theresa huffed and was nearly ready to give up and go for her wand when someone speaking startled her, causing her to jump down off the shelf with a face flushed with embarrassment from getting caught. Climbing the bookshelves, of all things. "Um, hello."
Vindictus snickered, watching Theresa fail at getting a book she needed. She even resorted to climbing the shelves. He had his wand out, and had been tempted to give her a tiny stinging hex, just to be mean (and really, just because he could). He uttered the spell, but she had heard him and jumped in time; the hex his one of the books and sizzled silently about Theresa's head.
"Right," he said, turning to leave. "Hullo and goodbye."
Okay, climbing a bookshelf wasn't very proper, but it totally didn't deserve a hex thrown at her! Theresa's hand shot out to call her wand over (because there was no way she was going to confront him without her wand) and she stepped forward as the familiar piece of wood smacked her palm. She should have never walked off without her wand, but who thought that she could get attacked? Well Theresa had something to prove now didn't she?
"So you're a coward?" Theresa taunted, perhaps very foolishly but she was embarrassed now and a little cheesed off, "Running away like that after hexing someone from behind? I don't think so." She stuck out her wand and sent a tripping hex to his feet to keep him from going anywhere.
Vindictus was impressed with her skill. Very impressed with her skill. She had summoned her wand and fired a hex at him in no time at all. He jumped, surprised, and deflected the hex, sending a stunning hex back at her. He wasn't a coward! Or ... well, he probably was, but he wouldn't have run if the spell had actually hit her.
"Fighting in the library? I'm game. Show me what you got, Yaxley."
Right, they were in the library - deflecting spells would be harmful for the books, so the next shield she put up absorbed the effect of the spell, instead of sending it off into the books, the only problem was that the power was sent up her arm. Theresa dropped the shield and shook her arm lightly as it tingled. There had to be a point where her safety was more important than the books, but... he wouldn't actually hurt her, would he? She raised a curious eyebrow, looking him up and down. He was only a fifth year, and full of hot air probably, but she wasn't going to underestimate him.
"Expelliarmus," Theresa flicked her wrist and sent a disarming charm, but quietly followed it with a bat bogey hex. The disarming charm could cause spell burns if deflected improperly, but this was more about skill than brute force wasn't it? If he couldn't do it right, then they were fucked and both in trouble.
Vin was impressed. Highly impressed. But Vin fought in Florence every summer against (as he deemed them) far worthier opponents. He had also quickly gleaned that this was more about skill of handling spells than it was about intent to cause damage; nevertheless, he deflected the disarming charm wincing at it hit the table where Theresa had been working. Well. That wasn't how it was supposed to go. At all. He watched the table smolder, then turned to Theresa, "You're quite good. You should teach me that absorber shield thing. But uh, I recommend grabbing your bag and getting out of here if you don't want to get in trouble from Pince. So ... I'll see you around."
He tucked his wand away, gave a half wave to Theresa, and ducked into the next stack of books he saw, working his way quickly to the exit.
