Books read so far:
Shopgirl, Steve Martin

Told mostly in narrative, with very little dialogue, it's the story of a sad girl who works in the glove department at Neiman's and finds a relationship with an older man who is looking for sex, mostly. There's no clear-cut plot, but the evolution of the characters is good and paced, and the language is excellent in some parts.

Books read so far:
Summer of Love, Emily Franklin

What I didn't realize is this is actually a book taking place in the middle of a series. It fills you in relatively quickly, introducing Love as a not-quite-so-wealthy girl attending a wealthy private school (although she's in the midst of summer break), and working at her (recently deceased) aunt's coffee shop in Martha's Vineyard. There are complex love triangles, and a cross-country scavenger hunt. Ends rather disappointingly, with a cliffhanger, but overall, not too bad.

Books read so far:
Sacrifice Moon, Julie Fortune

SG-1 gets trapped on a planet where Carter and Daniel are forced to hunt Jack and Teal'c. Set in early, early season 1, there are some really great moments with Daniel and Teal'c, getting into the whole issue with Sha're, and the Jack voice is great, but Carter gets completely shafted. Bonus points for heavy Greek myth imagery.

Books read so far:
The Stealers of Dreams, Steve Lyons

Another Doctor Who book, this one much more entertaining than previous ones. The Doctor, Rose, and Jack visit a planet where fiction makes people crazy, owing to microorganisms in the air. Rose goes crazy, Jack gets abducted, and the Doctor has to save everyone, as usual. An entertaining, breezy read.

Books read so far:
The Silver Chair, C.S. Lewis

I'd grown to like Eustace by the end of Dawn Treader, yet Lewis goes on to make him completely unlikeable in this. Plus, I'm as depressed as he is about the whole Caspian being super old thing, and the Caspian death scene was just peculiar. Not because of the religious allegory nonsense, but because of the "let me show you a glimpse of the Friends of Narnia's world, only it's going to be a horrible, nasty place and you're going to have to charge at schoolchildren with a sword." Great promo there, Aslan.

Books read so far:
Sexy, Joyce Carol Oates

Not bad, but a little hard to follow sometimes, particularly towards the ending. The whole thing is very dark and quite depressing, and the ending is just so completely out of left field, I don't even know how to react. I was not a huge fan.
