Who: Raven & Terezi
What: Getting to know each other better
Where: The Red Pepper
When: Tuesday afternoon (backdated)
Warnings: probably not
Status: closed/in progress

It was silly to be nervous about spending time with her son's girlfriend and yet Raven was. Things were going so well with her and Kurt and she didn't want to risk doing anything to mess that up. Hopefully, getting to know Terezi better would be a good thing and not cause any problems either with the two teenagers or between her and her son.

She knew a little about the young woman thanks to hearing things from both Kurt and Vex. Enough to know that the place Terezi was from was quite different from this world and that she didn't understand a lot of things that humans did. Hopefully Raven wouldn't inadvertently do anything that trolls found offensive.

When she arrived at the restaurant, she managed to snag a booth that was tucked back in a corner and kept an eye out for her companion's arrival, waving her over as soon as she entered.

Trolls didn't really have parents. They had beasts that acted like a bodyguard and caretaker called a lusus, and that was probably the closest thing to a parental guardian they had. But even so, it still wasn't quite the same as parents on Earth. They certainly never met the parent of the person they were dating, and so Terezi found no need to worry.

She had the day off work and decided to use the time to have a lunch with Raven and chat a bit. Maybe get to know her since she was Kurt's mother and was important to him. From what she knew so far, Raven seemed like a cool person. She walked into the restaurant and sniffed, spotting Raven and making her way over.

"Hey, hope you weren't waiting long," she said as she sat down across from her. "How's it going?"

Raven was immediately sheepish and lowered her hand when she remembered that her waving wasn't going to do any good because Terezi wouldn't see it. She should have called out to her.

"No, not at all," she said. "I've only been here a couple of minutes. I wanted to make sure we got a table before the lunch rush. Have you been here before?"

It suddenly occurred to her that she had no idea if they had accessible menus or if Terezi even knew braille.

"Oh, good," Terezi grinned as she shrugged her jacket off. She was glad she hadn't kept Raven waiting for too long.

"Nope, can't say I have. I usually just go to Hinkles." Which, yes, meant Terezi didn't know what they had on the menu here. At Hinkles, she knew it by heart since she'd been there plenty of times before. But here was new and different and she didn't know the menu.

So she picked it up and sniffed it, her nose practically touching it. "The soup of the day sounds good," she said after a moment.

It shouldn't be as odd to Raven as it was that Terezi could sense so much by smell. After all, it wasn't any weirder than a lot of the mutations she'd seen in her life. Still, it caught her off guard.

"Do you want me to read you descriptions of anything?" she offered, hoping that it wasn't offensive for her to ask. The last thing she wanted to do was make her son's girlfriend dislike her.

Terezi was used to people asking questions like that, so she wasn't offended at all and just simply smiled and shook her head. "No thanks, I can smell the words fine," he told Raven. Yep, even the small print, though she had to really sniff hard to read those.

She turned back to sniffing the menu again to see if she wanted anything else. She came upon a word she didn't recognized and a confused look crossed her features. "What's that word?" she asked, showing Raven the menu and pointing 'Mediterranean'. "Meditarium?"

"Oh, it's Mediterranean," Raven said after glancing at the menu. "It's a geographic area. Well, it's an ocean. And so the countries that border it are considered the Mediterranean." She wasn't exactly well traveled, but she knew some geography.

She shrugged. "It's usually a lot of chicken and fish with olive oil and fresh veggies."

"Oh, that's cool. I never lived by the ocean, but a couple of my friends live in it back home." Though she wasn't quite sure she'd call Eridan a friend, but Feferi certainly was, even if she was too nice and bubbly for Terezi's tastes.

"I do like chicken, not sure about fish, though. I've tried it but it smells too much for me," she wrinkled her nose a bit. "Maybe I'll just stick with the soup." Which is what she got, along with an iced tea to drink once the waitress came by and got their orders.

Fish having too strong a smell for someone who navigated the world that way made sense to Raven and she avoided ordering fish so that she wouldn't make things more difficult for her lunch companion. Instead, she opted for one of the chicken sandwiches.

"So, tell me more about where you're from," she said. It didn't actually surprise her when Terezi said she had friends who lived in the ocean. The idea of mermaids or talking sea creatures made perfect sense.

Sometimes scents can come across way too strong for Terezi. Whether it was the actual smell or because the colors were too intense, it definitely made it too much for her nose. Luckily, she managed to avoid that most of the time.

"Well, it was a planet called Alternia. Aside from us trolls, there were creatures called lusus or lusii. They kind of acted liked our guardians instead of parents." She didn't even know what parents were until she met John and Dave and the others. "We're a pretty violent species, always killing and maiming each other. Oh, and we have different color blood and if you're high on the spectrum, you're royalty, and the opposite if you're on the lower end."

Raven was a little concerned when Terezi said that her species was prone to violence. Not like she had room to judge, especially considering the stories she'd heard about the version of her from other universes. "So what color is your blood and where does it fall on the spectrum?"

Was her son dating some kind of troll royalty? And if so, what would that entail?

It wasn't easy when she first arrived here. Terezi had gotten into a few fights when she'd been in school, but since she graduated and got a job and lived amongst the humans for awhile now, she had pretty much toned down the violence. Sure, she was still a bit insensitive at times but she was better with it now.

"It's teal, same with my tears too, and it's pretty much smack dab in the middle," she told Raven. "Which is alright, I guess. Smells like kinda minty to me."

"Oh, cool," Raven said. It was fascinating to learn about such a different place and she was glad that they'd had a chance to do this. She was trying to be a good mom and getting to know her son's girlfriend was a good mom thing to do.

Their food arrived then. "Well, this smells amazing," she said.
