"An oversimplification, but yes, I suppose 'will' is vaguely correct." He looked over at him when he mentioned duels, then shrugged a little. "I guess you could call it a duel. Only he didn't know who I was, and I wasn't anywhere near him. And I didn't know when he'd be attacking, so I had to be on guard all the time. Had to stay with friends so they'd be able to protect me, or wake me up when I was sleeping, if he started to attack. Really motivated me to get my gram finished."
He looked up at him. "Well, yes, runes are one thing each, but we have sentences of sorts, too. Binding runes, that sort of thing. I learned all the elementary ones in seven days, takes most a month."
There was only a hint of bragging in his voice, it was much more a statement of fact then him re-asserting his cleverness. Despite what Elodin thought, Kvothe generally felt that his cleverness spoke for itself, if people knew of it. Of course, that was the part that was hardest.
"Ule and doch are Both for binding Reh for seeking Kel for finding Gea key Teh lock Pesin water Resin rock...."
He shrugged.
"I know all of them, that's but a snippet. Yours are different. I wonder if they'd work for me?" He took the paper and gazed at it for a moment. What do they do? Is it the same sort of thing?"
He looked up at him.
"I still don't understand what enchantments are. Pure magic? Magic's just what people who don't understand call sympathy, sygaldry and Naming. So which one is it?"
