Harry passed Kvothe a crystal hanging from a chain, then sank down onto the sofa, kicking his feet up onto the coffee table in front of him. "For now you use that to bypass the wards around the apartment, it's keyed into them and you won't get turned into a pile of goo for coming in. Just until you learn how to take them down and replace them after. If you lose the crystal tell me right away because I, personally, don't want to be surprised by some asshole with a shotgun in my own home. Cool?" he arched a brow questioningly.
If Kvothe ever stopped being Harry's 'apprentice' it would be the first item Harry would reclaim from him. There was no better feeling than having a secure home and he wouldn't jeopardize it for anyone. He regarded the boy placidly then got to his feet, going into the kitchen to grab a couple of Cokes. When he returned he popped one open, took a drink then set both down on the coffee table before he gathered a pile of papers. Harry sat down again and eyed his apprentice, then he leaned forward and smoothed the papers out onto the table in front of them. The contained writing and diagrams scrawled across each of them, front and back.
"These are different designs I've made," he started, "for a shield bracelet. I've made a few before but I lost the last one I had and it contained elements I'm allergic to. It's designed to stop physical or magical attacks of most kinds. The shields were made of silver, iron, copper, nickel and brass. If you had to redo it, how would you stabilize these without iron, without destroying the integrity of the shields?" he asked. It was a difficult question for an apprentice and Harry wouldn't have asked it of Molly right away, but Kvothe came from a different background than the Carpenters, and his knowledge with runes and designing machinery was more advanced than that.
