Emily appreciated that Karen was still willing to help her with girly things even though her uncle had blown up their relationship. Sure, she knew she could have probably gotten Riley or Maya to go shopping with her, but she liked having an adult woman that she could get advice from when she needed it.
Once they’d picked her dress, she insisted on treating Karen to lunch as a thank you. “The only time I ever wish I wasn’t a redhead is when I have to shop for clothes,” Emily said. “I was blonde as a little kid, but it changed as I got older and I mostly love it.” It just seemed like a lot of colors clashed with her hair and that made shopping more difficult.

Karen was grateful that Emily still liked her, and that they were friends. She genuinely liked the teenager, and had enjoyed getting to know her over the months she’d been dating Emily’s uncle, and while things hadn’t worked out for them she was glad that Emily still wanted to hang out with her in return. Honestly, Karen wasn’t sure she’d ever want or have kids, but having Emily around was almost like a test run.
Karen had to grin at that. “Trust me, even being blonde or strawberry blonde can be a hindrance in clothing choices. When I was twelve, I actually dyed my hair brown. My dad was so pissed, and took me to a salon to pay to have it lightened again,” she said with a laugh.
***
“Kind of sounds like my dad,” Emily said. She loved her father, but he was more than slightly overprotective. It was understandable, given his line of work, though that didn’t make it any less frustrating for a teenager who wanted a little bit of freedom.
Her mom, on the other hand, would have taken her to a high end salon to do whatever she wanted, even if her father objected. Especially if her father objected really. Diane lived for needling her ex husbands. “I still worry about him,” she admitted. “He was in rough shape when I showed up here.”
***
“Have you been able to hear from him in anyway? Get new memories or anything like that?” Karen asked in sympathy. She knew that the last thing her dad would want would be to hear from her, but she didn’t really want to think about that right now.
“I know you must miss him a lot.”
***
Part of Emily wished that she would get some new memories, but another part of her was reluctant because what if they were bad? After seeing how much Archie had to deal with when he was sent home, she didn’t think she’d want to go through that. Not like she would have a choice. The dome did what the dome wanted.
“No, nothing so far,” she said. “And when Tony was here, he was from when I was a little kid, so he didn’t know anything.” She shrugged. “How’s your friend doing? He settling in okay?”
***
“I’m sorry it’s been so long since you’ve seen either of your parents,” Karen said. She could understand that - she missed her own, and her brother, pretty regularly. Instead of dwelling though, she concentrated on Emily’s question.
“Matt? He seems to be doing pretty well for himself. He’s back in business with his best friend, and I’m pretty sure he’s dating someone right now.” In fact, Matt seemed to be a lot more together than Karen felt right now.
“Where are we going for lunch?”
***
Em smiled. “I was thinking about The Musain,” she said. It was a nicer place, but the food was good and reasonably priced. Plus since it was owned and operated by refugees, she liked to support it. “Unless you’d rather go somewhere else.”
It really didn’t matter much to her either way. “It’s good that Matt’s settling in,” she added. “I’m sure you’re glad to have more people from home around.” She knew that Gibbs was disappointed by Tony leaving. She was too, even if he’d known her so much younger.
***
“Nope, the Musain sounds great,” she replied, returning the smile. When Emily went on, Karen nodded her understanding.
“It was hard when I first arrived, and no one around I knew personally. Having Foggy show up was practically a godsend, and when Matt showed up? It was pretty great.” She loved each of them, but now they were more family than anything else.
***
“I can’t even imagine being here without Uncle Gibbs,” Emily admitted. If he hadn’t been here, she would have been forced to live with a stranger and that could have been awkward. She knew it worked out for some people, like Archie, who developed a strong bond with their guardians, but that wasn’t a guarantee.
They headed towards the Musain and Emily was grateful the weather was decent. “What do you think I should do with my hair?” she asked.
***
“Maybe bring it up and have some curls dangling?” Karen suggested. “You could even use a tiara or circlet for some added sparkle. Are you planning on having your hair done by a salon, or at home?” She wondered as they walked, glad that they were spending this time together.
***
That sounded like a nice idea for her hair. “I’m not sure I could do that on my own,” Emily said. “So unless I can find someone to help me, I guess I’ll need to make an appointment to have it done.” She figured one of her friends might be able to help. Maybe she could see if Maya and Riley wanted to get ready together or something. Or maybe Karen would offer to help her. She didn’t feel right asking though.
***
Karen looked over at her, and then after a moment she decided to offer. After all, Gibbs breaking up with her didn’t have to mean she couldn’t have a relationship with his niece. “I can come over and help out, if you want. You’ll just have to pick something out to use. We can look for an accessory that works after we eat.”
***
Emily grinned. “That would be great.” She really appreciated that Karen was still willing to do things like this with her even though Uncle Gibbs was an idiot. They arrived at the restaurant then and she held open the door. “I’m starving. Let’s order everything,” she joked.
