It was almost the end of the school year and there was no amount of catching up that was going to keep him out of having to go to summer school to. He knew he should have done better, that Rosethorn would have cuffed him around the head until he couldn’t see if she knew how he was treating his studies here. They were useless, and he didn’t need them; no one understood here that he had a life that he’d already succeeded in, that he was one of the four youngest ever fully accredited mages, one of the most powerful plant mages. He could always learn more but what they taught just wasn't relevant to him and Briar hated being cooped up for so many hours a day, especially when the weather was good and he could be in the garden.
He’d stuck around all day today, though, for once, had just grabbed Cassie as soon as the last bell rang and raced out. There were only so many hours of daylight left and he had work to do. His garden needed attention, and his friend was getting surprisingly good at helping with the little jobs. The way he’d done when he’d first started.
Crouched down beside the fence, hands and knees covered in dirt, he carefully dug holes to move flowers from the little pots he’d been keeping them in to their new home. He didn’t need magic for this, preferred to do it without anyway; dirt under his nails and cool against his palms was comforting. “These ones are called Lamb’s Ear,” he explained as he worked. “This side of the yard’s mostly sunny during the day so they’ll do good here.”
He liked that Cassie liked to hear about his plants, and was happy to share a little of what he knew.
