WHO Bucky Barnes & Natasha Romanoff
WHAT Checking in on the Barnes'
WHEN Saturday, March 16 [backdated]
WHERE Portal: MCU Brooklyn 1936
WARNINGS TBD, probably not much just feels
STATUS Closed | Incomplete

After Sarah Rogers' passing just two days ago, Bucky had been lingering a little more around his family where he could. It wasn't ideal and he knew he'd get caught sooner or later if he wasn't careful. It was a good thing this portal probably wouldn't last much longer. They never lasted too much longer than a week and they were on the 7th day now. With little time left, he'd asked Natasha to meet him, to check in on his sisters because he couldn't and seeing things from a distance was never quite good enough.

Even though she was in disguise, Bucky still recognized her. He wasn't ever going to not recognize Natasha. "Thank you for doing this," he said softly instead of a proper greeting. He'd been lurking in the alleyway across from his family home, where his youngest sister was fooling around with a bunch of boxes in the front yard, playing like the tomboy she was. "I just..." He stopped from saying he wished things were different. Things weren't different and there wasn't anything they could do about that. Bucky couldn't risk changing the timeline, couldn't risk not falling from the train, not becoming what HYDRA made him, because then he wouldn't have this. He needed this and he wasn't prepared to give it up.

Natasha knew it was hard for Bucky to see his family so close and not feel like he could be with them. It felt cruel of the dome to do such a thing but then it had a history of cruel things, Natasha sadly knew that from experience. Naturally she had readily agreed to join him and be the one who could meet his sisters, she was looking forward to it. Getting to see the family he came from was an honor.

Natasha knew that Bucky would see past the clothing and wig, even if she tried harder she knew he'd know her. It was just the way it was. "Of course" she replied, before she wrapped him in a hug, "I know" she said, because she did. It was the catch 22 a few of them had, the want to change the past while not wanting to lose what they had in the future.

[ooc: just so you know, kara met his sisters & mom back in their log that me & jen are working on now! this one is just a little more delicate, checking in on them after steve's mom passed away!]

Bucky was so grateful for the relationship he had with Natasha. All the history they shared and how well they knew each other made it easier for these kinds of requests. It wasn't as difficult as it had been, talking about his emotions, but this was a unique set of circumstances that led to this moment and he couldn't not be there for his sisters again. He just couldn't risk them discovering anything, not before they were meant to.

"Becca and Mallory should be home any minute," he told her, speaking of the younger two of his sisters. "It looks like Elizabeth is helping Ma with the laundry. There's a lot to be done before the funeral." Bucky tried to push past the way his voice wavered on the last word. "If I remember right, they're going to spend the rest of the night cooking for me to bring over to Steve. Ma and Pops got into a big fight over it but she set him straight." He'd understood, later, where his dad had been coming from, but Steve was family. Always had been, always would be.

[ooc: Yeah sorry I should have been clearer, when Nat thinks about being the one able to meet them she was thinking more out of the two of them there at the time. I assumed Kara would have met them. Sorry, reading back I can see that wasn't clear.]

Back in the twisted past of the Red Room and all of that Bucky was as close to family as Nat had then, as strange as that may be. So naturally now she definitely considered him family she would be there for him, in whatever form that took.

Natasha nodded, she didn't think it would be too hard to offer help without suspicion. Being a trained spy had it's helpful moments and Natasha was good when it came to seamlessly inserting herself into situations. "You gonna be okay here?" she asked him, her concern for him obvious, she wasn't going to hide it.

[ooc: no worries!!! i just wanted to make sure ♥ ]

"No," he admitted honestly. It was a personal version of hell to be this close to his family and not be able to see them. Especially now when he was feeling the loss of Sarah Rogers all over again. The emotions had brought a lot of memories to the surface that he'd thought lost. They were painful memories, ones he was okay with having lost, but now he couldn't just return to how things were. Ultimately, this would be a good thing, but getting it to that point was hard to face.

"But it will have to be enough." It wouldn't ever be, but he had to move on. Bucky pulled a small box out of his pocket and opened it, revealing two comm devices. He offered it to her so she could take one and he could take the other. "Just in case." He wasn't going to put anything to chance and this way he could listen in.

Natasha appreciated the honesty, she knew it would be something Bucky would get past and deal with but right now it was raw and hurting. All over again. It didn't seem fair, it sounded like a gift to begin with until you realised the implications of it. There was so much unknown, affecting timelines was dangerous and she completely agreed with Bucky in not risking it. Despite how much it must hurt not to be able to be with them.

She took one of the comms with a nod, hoping that the interaction she would have with his family would help more than hurt. She would do her very best.

Bucky nodded back and then took a step away from her, further into the shadows of the alleyway across the street. He would offer advice as she approached and interacted with his siblings, but she knew about them just as much as anyone else did in his life. She'd at least had the advantage of looking through his file, which had included a detailed dossier on his family.

He watched her as she approached, coming from the opposite direction that Becca and Mal were walking in, lugging the groceries between them. Mal wasn't looking where she was going, the pair of them having some kind of hushed argument that he couldn't make out, and stumbled, causing some of the vegetables to spill out onto the sidewalk, just in front of Natasha.

"Just great," Rebecca huffed as she stopped. "You're such a klutz!"

"Am not! It's this stupid sidewalk!" Mallory replied. "Would you just help me get the stupid things?"
