WHO Bucky & Kara Barnes

Bucky and Steve had gotten period appropriate clothes for themselves and the girls since they didn’t want to be drawing attention to themselves when they were through the portal. This morning, he was looking to take Kara through so he could show her the bits and pieces he did remember. Plus, they could look at his family from afar. Knowing the version of him from this time spent all morning and afternoon at the docks meant they wouldn’t have to worry about anyone catching them and the cold weather meant gloves that covered his metal hand.

“You sure you’re up for this?” He wanted to double check, although it was probably the fifth time he’d asked her since he and Steve had discovered the portal yesterday. “It’ll be from a distance but- at least you’ll get to see more than just the pictures I have.” Those pictures didn’t do the Barnes family justice, not really.

“Of course,” Kara said. She knew that this had to be difficult for him and wanted to support him however she could. It was a shame that they had to keep their distance, but she understood why Bucky didn’t want to reveal himself or too much about the future to his family. Knowing even a fraction of what happened to him could put them in serious danger and change everything.

She reached out and took his hand, squeezing it in a gesture of comfort. “I got to show you Krypton, so I’m excited to see where you’re from,” she said. The dome occasionally did nice things for them like this and she appreciated it.

"It's not that great," he cautioned her as they made their way through the portal. October was always a cold month and 1936 was no exception. The wind hit them first, followed shortly thereafter by the smell and then the sounds. Brooklyn was hustling and bustling, very much part of the city that never sleeps, although the folks around this area were working their butts off every day just to make ends meet half the time. Bucky remembered the long hours and the rough callouses were still there on his hand. Brooklyn had left its mark on him just as much as the war had, just as much as HYDRA had.

"This time of morning, Ma's just about done with the morning errands," Bucky explained as he pulled her toward the direction of his home. "Lizzie, Mallory and Becca should all be at school." He couldn't remember if any of them had been sick around this time. He really could only recall Sara Rogers being sick, but then again, if his siblings weren't dying, it wouldn't compare to what Steve was going through with his mother.

The chill in the air didn't bother Kara at all and she paused once they stepped out of the portal to take a look around and get her bearings. Things looked so different here and it was hard to imagine Bucky and Steve living in a time and place like this.

"I wish I could really meet them," she said. She knew how important Bucky's family was and hated that he couldn't really spend time with them. "I mean, I know why we can't, but it sucks."

That gave Bucky an idea. "Well," he began, "I can't. That doesn't mean you couldn't. You just wouldn't be able to tell them about me." About his future, about the war, about HYDRA, not any of it. He did very much want her to meet his mother and sisters, they would be easier to get to than his father and they'd likely leave a better impression. It wasn't like with Steve's Ma, who none of them would believe if she were to slip and say something. They had to be a lot more careful with Bucky's family.

"It might not be more than a passing hello," he added, though his mother was never one to just brush past someone if the situation were right. Bucky felt it was better to set the expectations low. Even though it would be hard for him to not be able to stand in front of his mother and promise her everything would turn out alright in the end, maybe she'd get some kind of motherly intuition about all of it. Plus, it would be nice for her to meet their daughter's namesake, even if that daughter might not ever be their reality.

Kara's eyes widened. "Really? I mean, you'd be okay with that?" As much as she'd love to actually meet his family, she didn't want to do anything that might make this whole experience more painful for him.

"Obviously I couldn't tell them about you now, but maybe I could mention being a friend of yours," she said. That would be wildly understating things, but she could hardly tell them that she was his wife. She couldn't even say she was his girlfriend because they would no doubt ask the younger version of him about it and his past self wouldn't have any idea what they were talking about.

"It's better than not meeting them at all. It's not like Steve's Ma, where we can introduce you to her without it being too much of an issue." It would be hard, to not be able to introduce Kara properly, but it was a sacrifice he was willing to make to get her at least some interaction with his family.

"A friend would be good, although they might see through that." Bucky chuckled. "I was generally only 'friends' with girls for one reason." In all fairness, Bucky was friendly with everyone it was just that no one was as important to him as Steve was. "But they'll all be nice to you. Might get some teasing from the girls, but hopefully it'll be alright." His family were good people and they'd be respectful.

"And afterwards, we can go meet Steve's Ma. You'll love her."

"I would like that," Kara said. She wished that they could have a big family dinner with all of them and the girls and Bucky's sisters and everyone, but she understood why that wasn't possible. "And I think I can handle whatever teasing your sisters try to throw at me."

It wasn't like they'd be wrong if they thought she was someone their brother was making time with. It just wasn't nearly as illicit as they would think.

"You say that now," Bucky joked. "Just remember, Becca's the baby of the family so she tends to give it the most." And Rebecca was his favorite, even though he'd never come right out and said such a thing. His Ma would've smacked him upside the head if she'd heard him playing favorites. He'd definitely told her all about his sisters, how Elizabeth was the older of the three and the most prim and proper, following all the rules and whatnot. Mallory was the middle sister, slightly tomboyish but not nearly as much as Rebecca was. He loved all of them, but he'd gotten along best with Rebecca. She never minded getting greased helping him with the car when the situation called for it.

"Come on, I think we can intercept them down the street," he suggested, offering her his arm. They could walk that way for a little while, though they'd have to break off once they had the game plan about meeting his sisters. He'd have to remind her to take her wedding rings off too, so as not to arouse any additional suspicion.

It wouldn't surprise Kara to hear that Rebecca was his favorite given that she was the one they named their potential future daughter after. A daughter she still hoped to be able to give him someday. Things were a little better between them lately now that the lack of Becca showing up over Christmas was further behind them and she hoped that this wasn't going to be another setback. She hated feeling like he would be happier without her.

She took his arm and let him lead the way down the street. "I would love to meet younger you too," she said. "See what you were like back then."

Bucky shook his head. "No," he said, clearly very much against the idea. "You shouldn't have direct contact with the me of this time, or Steve." There was far too much risk involved and given what this week was, he knew full well the him of this time wouldn't even give Kara the time of day. He'd been too wrapped up in working long enough hours to make some extra money. Steve was going to need a help if he was going to live on his own and the obvious choice was for the pair of them to live together.

"Just talking to my family is a risk. We shouldn't tempt fate." They'd had enough bad luck in their lives and things were only just starting to get back on track. If the timeline somehow got messed up, it would just make things worse. "Promise me you won't go looking for the us of this time."

Kara nodded. "Of course, I don't want to risk anything changing," she said. That would be bad for all of them. The last thing she wanted was to inadvertently change Bucky's past and make him not want to be married to her anymore.

"And I'll be very careful with your family," she added. Maybe she wouldn't even talk to them, just get close enough to eavesdrop a little on their conversations and get a sense of who they were.

Bucky was glad that she understood how important it was that they not risk what they already had just for a passing curiosity. While he could understand that logically because this was something the Dome did to them, it wouldn't matter in the long run, he was too cautious. And as much as he did want to see his family, hold them tight and promise them everything would be okay, there was definitely a part of him that didn't think he was worthy enough to be in their presence.

He gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "I know this isn't ideal, not by any means, but it's something." And something had to be better than nothing. At the end of the day, this was more for Steve than anyone else, a chance for them to give Mrs Rogers some peace in her dying days, but Bucky would try to do what he could for himself, to see his family the way he wanted to remember them. Happy despite all else.

"Love you," Kara said, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "You should take me to see some of your favorite places after this."

Something that they could do together without risking the timeline.

"Absolutely," he agreed. He'd show her all his favorite parts of Brooklyn, from the corner shops he knew best to the bakery on 72nd that he loved more than anything and would always go out of his way to visit when he had the spare money. He'd show her all the important places too, like where they'd move into after Steve's mom passed and the Army center he'd had to report to when he got drafted. He'd even show her the alleyways he found Steve in the most, although he probably had stories for all of them.

"Love you, too." He really did. Even with everything going on, that had stayed the same. Bucky led her down the street, knowing they had a full day ahead of them.

[ooc: and wrap!]
