I am still learning about Mardi Gras myself, but the purpose of Lent is to prepare believers of the Christian faith for Easter, the day we believe our Savior rose from the grave to atone for our sins.

It's meant to invoke suffering, which seems a bit counterproductive. But I believe it is meant to mimic the suffering that Jesus endured during his forty day fast.
