WHO York & Carmilla Karnstein
WHAT First time at Training Terrain
WHEN Friday afternoon
WHERE Training Terrain
WARNINGS tbd, will update if needed
STATUS MATCHUP | Closed | Incomplete

York enjoyed his work at Training Terrain, although he could admit that helping people through the course was probably more fun than designing it was. They were hard courses, requiring both skill and drive because that was how people improved. There were some 'cheats', ways to modify it for someone with more or less capabilities. The choices presented in the course were as much a challenge as the course itself. Do the rope bridge or the monkey bars or use the bolder wall to get across. Each one used a different set of muscles, different skills, and it made a difference in the long run.

He was just coming back from lunch and saw a woman at the start of the course that he'd never seen before. York walked over to her, intent on making sure she didn't have any questions before she started and that she knew how to follow the color coding markings for the various levels and difficulties.

"Afternoon," he greeted with a smile. "My name's York. Is this your first time today?"

Carmilla had decided back when the year started to try and do more exercising. Not that she really needed it, being a vampire and all. But while she still enjoyed lying around and being lazy, it had gotten a bit boring. She needed to change something and exercising seemed like a good place to start.

She had gone a few times to Anytime Fitness, but today she decided to try a little something different, so here she was at the Training Terrain. She heard a bit about it, that it could be modified to fit someone like her - someone with super speed and super strength. Maybe this would be a bit more of a challenge.

She arrived, changing into her workout clothes and headed out towards the start of the course. She did a few warmup stretches when one of the workers came up to her. "Carmilla," she replied with a nod. "And yeah, first time here. Not quite sure how this all works." She gestured to the course, which had these weird color codes and whatnot on it. She had no idea what any of it meant.

York had long since learned to not judge a person without asking the questions, but he thought he had pretty good reads on people and she gave him a read that something was a little bit off but not by much. Maybe she was just military or in some other kind of physically demanding role in her life before Madison Valley.

"Nice to meet you, Carmilla," he replied easily. "We've got a course set up, it's usually installed for anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks depending on how popular it is. It's marked for humans, humans with advanced training, those with advanced abilities they're still working on developing and those with abilities that have already been learned and are looking to be honed. Of course, there are ways to make each level easier or harder for someone in between levels, or even just the differences between age, weight, gender, et cetera." There were plenty of reasons to modify exercise depending on who it was.

"If you'd like, I can take you through it the first time around," he offered.

Nope, Carmilla wasn't all that physical by any means. Sure she was stronger and quicker than humans thanks to being a vampire, but up until now, she was a lazy vampire.

"You too," she nodded. While she was fiercely independent and liked to do things on her own, the course looked quite confusing for someone seeing it for the first time and she was kind of glad he was there to explain it all. "Well, I'm a vampire, so I guess I'd be one of those with advanced abilities. But I haven't exercised in years." A hundred years, actually. It had definitely been awhile.

She paused for a moment before nodded. "If you don't mind, that'd be great."

Vampire was a new one. He knew they existed here, had heard enough about it in passing, but this was the first time he was meeting one. "Okay. We can take it slower, even on a more advanced part of the course." He was trying to gauge if she would be better off with the advanced human course or the lower level for the enhanced folks. That would require a couple of questions and he was hoping he'd be tactful enough with it. He usually was.

"How many years are we talking about?" That was, first and foremost an important question, followed by, "And have you eaten today?" York didn't know how frequently vampires needed to eat, though he did fully understand they were sustained on blood. As far as he was concerned, he didn't have to make it weird or not normal by asking it in a different way.

"Yeah, alright," Carmilla shrugged. While the course right now didn't look too intimidating, she figured it was probably best if she started out a bit slow. At least until she got the hang of it better.

"At least before television was invented. So it's definitely been awhile." While she did prefer to stay in and read books back then, she still managed to get a bit of exercise walking around town. But after she discovered television, she became hooked and she kind of got lazy after that. "And yeah, I've eaten. I should be good to go."

Before television was invented was not an answer York had ever gotten before. That was interesting. "I can't say I know that date off the top of my head, but I have a feeling it's at least a few decades," he replied. Technology was so far advanced in his time that it was hard to remember the milestones that had come before the ones he'd personally witnessed or those that were more relevant to him, like the advancements in AI Technology.

"Alright then, let's get started." He gestured for her to follow him as he led the way over to the course start for humans with advanced training. It would be the more cautious way to start and if she saw success there, he hoped it would encourage her to come back and try the other versions of the course to improve her time.

"I can't remember the exact date either." Some things she had remembered, others she didn't. TV was obviously part of the latter. "But it is interesting to see how far television has come." She'd been there for it all, from the beginning to it showing in color and becoming high definition and how it is now.

But it wasn't time to talk about the history of television. She was here to try out this course, to get a bit of exercise. She followed him, giving the course a quick look before turning to him. "Ready when you are."

"This might be on the easy side for you, but it's important to start slow with these sorts of things," he explained. York went on to provide the objective for the first part of the course and the two different options she had to get through. He took the time to explain the challenges with each one and what skills she'd need to rely on to be successful.

It was easier to focus on the course than on the fact that she was so old, she remembered life without television. York found this place primitive in a lot of ways thanks tot he technological advancements he had in his time, but that wasn't the same as him having lived through all those changes and discoveries.

Carmilla nodded. "True." He was right, starting slow was better. As much as she wanted to just go and do the hard, more challenging way, it was probably better if she took it easy at first. Especially because she never did the course before. Running through it a couple times might make it easier.

She listened as he explained everything. "Alright, got it," she said and took her spot at the very start. "Wish me luck." She probably didn't need it, but it was still good to have. Without another word, she took off and began the course.

York appreciated that she was game to start out. "Good luck," he replied, and took a step back as she made her way across. He gave it a few moments before he followed behind her. There were some trickier parts further along the course and he wanted to be able to provide the same direction and support for her each step of the way.

Hopefully, she'd come back and try it again, over and over until she was setting records along with some of the other regulars.
