Hermione was happy to have Miranda back in their lives for a little while during the holidays. Though she wasn't really sure that she was ready for kids, but when she was ready, she knew she wanted it to be with Oz. They'd been together for over two years now and it was nice to think that in a few more years, they'd be married with a little girl. What was less nice to think about were the children she had with Ron, no doubt from the future that awaited them at home. She still hadn't finished the book series that was her 'source material', but she knew enough about stories to be able to surmise what would happen to her.
"You've been really great with all of this," she said to her boyfriend as the three of them cuddled on the couch. Miranda was dozing on her lap but the fairytale movie they'd put in was still playing. Hermione hadn't been paying much attention to start with, but she wasn't quite ready to move their daughter to put her to bed. "I love you," she added, and she shifted to give him a kiss on the cheek. It was clear that this was the life she wanted, where she wanted to be. Rose and Hugo belonged to a different Hermione.

“Well I mean I think I had something to do with it.” He meant Miranda, if they had a kid in the future obviously he’d taken a part in it but of course he grinned a little at her since she had some kids with Ron show up. “Well not all of it obviously but we can make up for that later.” They’d have to wait until Miranda was in bed or off somewhere else but he didn’t mind. Sitting here like this was pretty damn comfortable and relaxing.
“I love you too. And Rose and Hugo are pretty funny honestly.” They’d been curious about their mom’s muggle boyfriend in this world of course. Oz didn’t mind them asking him a million questions, Rose really seemed to take after her mother.

She rolled her eyes, but she wasn't the least bit upset or exasperated by his response. "We should get our practice in," Hermione agreed with a grin. She even leaned in to steal a kiss to seal the promise. There would be a time for them to expand their family, but that wasn't for a while as far as she was concerned. Even though she'd been in Madison Valley for so long already, she worried that one day one of them would be sent back to their world.
Hermione was a little more hesitant with Rose and Hugo, more so than she really should have been. That future just seemed so unrealistic in certain ways and given how happy she was with Oz, it was hard for her to reconcile eventually going back to England and marrying her friend. She knew that was her future though. She'd looked it up to be certain. "I appreciate it though. I know I'm not...the best with them." Certainly not the way she was with Miranda.

“I get that it’s kind of awkward.” Hermione had never shown any interest in having that kind of relationship with Ron since he’d shown up. It was obviously in their future and neither one of them seemed to be there yet emotionally so Oz really didn’t worry about it. Of course he also didn’t spend any time with Ron because he might be okay with the idea they had a relationship some other time he still didn’t necessarily like to get know him better. Kind of unfair and biased but it was what it was.
“But you’ll be okay if you spend some time with them.” It was also hard for them to see their mom and have her be conflicted. “We could all do the big group thing, or you and Ron spend time with them. I won’t mind if they don’t want me there.”
***
“Very awkward.” Hermione had thought their relationship had just run its course and they’d be friends for the rest of their lives, but clearly something happened to bring them together. She wasn’t sure what it was and felt strongly that nothing could sway her into rekindling the love she’d felt for Ron at one point in time. Knowing she was considered nothing more than a fictional character to so many people sort of reinforced the idea that her time in Madison was her choice, her chance to express herself for who she was as opposed to what some author decided.
“I’d want you there,” she replied honestly as she stroked Miranda’s back. The little girl was knocked out cold from the looks of it. “But I know it’s weird for them, too. Is it too selfish to wish they hadn’t been brought here in the first place?” She knew it was selfish. It was hard for her to feel that way, but Hermione was struggling with the fact that she thought she’d closed the book on that part of her life so firmly that nothing would ever be revisited. Normally she was very adaptable, but Rose and Hugo couldn’t exist at the same time as the little girl currently asleep on her lap. If given a choice, she wanted Oz and Miranda. And that was something she felt guilty over.

“You want me there I’m there.” Oz was pretty easy going and was able to be relied on to go with whatever was wanted but Hermione wanting him there was one of those rare things he’d put his foot down about out loud if anyone objected.
“Well...maybe a little. But seems to me like some people have so many kids from so many options that I wouldn’t worry about it too much.” She felt guilty. Hermione always had tells for her feelings and Oz tended to pick up on them between observation and his heightened senses. “Just enjoy them while they’re here.” Like he was enjoying having Miranda. She was their daughter but she wasn’t a raving werewolf, it gave him hope he’d keep everything under control for good.

She knew Oz would have her back no matter what, but it was still always so nice to hear that he'd put himself in an awkward spot if she would feel more comfortable with him there. Hermione always tried to do the same for him and it was one of the many reasons she thought they worked so well together. They were a team, always.
"I feel like I ought not to enjoy them if we're enjoying her," she admitted, although she knew it wasn't anything he hadn't already figured out. Talking about it helped her work through her feelings. "She's smart and funny and kind and fearless and I see the best parts of us in her. I know Madison isn't necessarily the best place to raise a child, but we could do it." Hermione firmly believed that. "With Rose and Hugo..." she trailed off with a shrug. "I see myself and Ron in them, I see what will be, and I just...I don't want it to take away from what we have."
***
"The thing is you don't take away from her if you also enjoy them. It doesn't have to be either or." He knew where she was coming from though. He could see where it would feel like cheating to be there for both of them, or maybe like you were putting weight behind one outcome or the other.
"Someday when we figure out how all this works maybe we could have all that here." Oz would admit he didn't mind the idea of having a kid they just had to figure out the way around the uncertainty of what he was affecting things negatively.
