Eddie was nervous. Very nervous. Not hearing from Jill in the days since he'd arrived had put him on edge, and he'd spent the better part of both nights pacing his room, worrying. All the things he'd heard hadn't helped. Jill hadn't wanted to talk to him. She was older than he remembered. They'd dated. He couldn't remember any of that, and didn't understand why Jill was angry. He knew that if he ever told her his feelings and she returned them, he'd never break her heart. Like he told Lissa, he'd die first.
But that didn't matter right now. What mattered was Jill and her safety. Once he knew that she was safe and secure to his standards, he could relax a little. But while he didn't know? No. He was going to be like this until he saw her.
Pacing back and forth, he looked over his room. Honestly, it looked like nobody lived here. His bed was made military style, and there were no decorations of any sort. Sure, he'd only been here a few days, but he didn't plan to do much more. His place was with Jill. There was no other place for him. That was how being a Guardian worked. He'd take a few hours off to sleep during the day, but other than that...well, he wanted to be at her side, and protect her from harm. Like he couldn't protect Mason. He couldn't let her down too.
He heard the steps in the hallway long before they reached the door and he opened it before they knocked.
He stared at her for a second, looking closely to make sure she was okay, then gave the man with her a darkly appraising look.
"Hey," he said, and he was embarrassed at the fact his voice broke. "Come on in."
