Who: Lorna Dane and Cassie Holmes.
What: Some food and questions.
Where: Hinkles
When: Tuesday afternoon (backdated)
Warnings: TBD but maybe some language between the two of them. Will update as it comes up.
Status: Closed, In Progress

The last thing Lorna was expecting was to be making plans to meet up with some kid, but this Cassie girl had caught her interest. A rare statement that Lorna never thought she’d be even thinking to herself. Instead of learning more about this place or looking into the whole job thing, which was a joke to her. Not the working part, but the idea anyone would hire her when she never even held a job, thanks to the whole being a mutant.

Instead, Lorna was heading to Hinkles to treat Cassie to some food in exchange for getting a few answers to questions. She had to know what it was like for a kid to grow up in a world almost like hers, and this was probably the only way for her to know. Lorna wanted to change the world for her child, but what if that didn’t happen? What if mutants were always doomed to be hunted? What would that do to her child if they ever returned home? These were questions floating around in her head 24/7 with no real way to answer them. The fact this child had that hell and seemed to be a tough cookie almost reminding Lorna a bit of herself had made it where she had to see if the girl felt like sharing.

Sitting down at a table off to the side with her back away from the people so she could watch them, Lorna glanced around the place, taking note of the people around. Wasn't really in the mood to deal with any surprises, especially ones that would get her locked back up. Running her fingers slightly through her green hair, she sat back in the seat waiting for the girl to show up.

Cassie was curious about Lorna. There were all kinds of people here and nothing really surprised her anymore, but someone who was like her? She made an effort to be around for those people because it was the right thing to do. Plus, Lorna was like her. She knew the darker side of the world and what it was like to be hunted. It made a difference in this place. Not everyone knew what it was like to have to fend for themselves.

After school, she headed for Hinkles and wasn't at all surprised to see the green haired woman already at a table. Cassie wasn't exactly delicate as she walked over and slid into the chair across from her. "Hey," she greeted. Green hair wasn't hard to miss. "Did you order yet?" She wasn't shy and she didn't hold back, always 100% authentic Cassie no matter who she was talking to. She had to be, or else she was at risk of losing herself and she couldn't let that happen. That was when the Dome won. She wasn't going to let the Dome win.

The thing that caught Lorna’s attention the most about Cassie was the fact the girl had an attitude and a mouth on her. She wasn’t going to pretend to be someone she wasn’t to make people happy. It was just a bit scary on how much Cassie reminded Lorna of herself. So when Cassie came in and sat down at Hinkles with a no care attitude, Lorna wasn’t exactly caught off guard.

“Hey,” she replied back before shaking her head. “No, I figured I’d wait for you before ordering anything.” Opening up the menu in front of her, Lorna glanced it over. It felt weird to be acting like a normal person since it wasn’t something she had done in years. “Any ideas on what you’re getting? Or any suggestions on what’s good in this place?”

"I usually go with a burger, fries and a shake," she replied as she got herself settled. Her phone went upside down on the table right next to her. Cassie would give Lorna most of her attention because it was the right thing to do but she still need to pay attention just in case her parents wanted her. It was a compromise she was more comfortable with making now than she'd been when the whole guardian thing had first happened.

"Food comes out quick and hot, and it's cheap. All the important bits." At least for people who were used to being on the run or keeping a low profile. Staying in any one place for too long was guaranteed to draw attention and that was a risk. A big risk.

"How're you settling in so far?" It took a while, for people like them.

Taking the suggestion to heart, she nodded her head slightly before deciding to go with that. It wasn’t like she was able to eat this stuff all that often back home so she might as well enjoy it for the time being. Closing the menu, Lorna decided to go with what Cassie had said just had to wait to place their order. “I guess I’ll try the burger, fries, and shake.”

This girl really did know the lifestyle that Lorna had been living for so many years. Never stay in one place for long. It wasn’t until the Mutant Underground that she found herself able to stay in one place of her own will. The only other place she ever stayed for a long period was against her wishes, but the Underground had been her choice. Though it didn’t come without its problems.

Normally, if someone had asked her that, Lorna would give them attitude or ignore the question. Her lack of trust showing quite nicely, but Cassie knew the lifestyle and how hard it was to adjust. It was the only reason Lorna was actually being honest with the girl. “It’s a process. I keep waiting for my organization to roll up in their cars and pile out with their guns. How long did it take before you were finally a little more comfortable with this place?” Lorna was actually curious. For her, she knew it would be a while, but what about a kid who was in that type of situation?

"Can't go wrong with that. Well, unless you're a vegetarian. But I'm guessing you're not." Not if she was going to go with a burger, and Cassie ordered, specifying a chocolate shake. Those were her favorite.

Adapting to a place like this wasn't easy, not even a little. She'd railed against it for so long that she honestly didn't remember the exact moment that she actually sort of accepted that this was her life now. Cassie still pushed at it, tumbled and strayed off the path, but for the most part she was alright. Sometimes, the Dome made it hard. Harder than it really needed to be.

"I've been here a little over two years now and I'm not sure I'm really comfortable yet. More comfortable than I was when I first got here, or even when Nick left." Cassie made a face when she mentioned his name. She really didn't like talking about Nick. "Division hasn't come for me yet. Your Sentinal Services guys won't either. But this place, it messes with you. It'll hurt you and fuck you up but if you find people that won't let you push them away, it helps." It had helped her.

The idea of being a vegetarian with the life she led was a joke. The group couldn’t get food most of the time, but then to have to cut out meat from the diet, Lorna would be screwed. “No, big fan of eating whatever the hell I want.” She replied before ordering herself almost the same just changing the shake to vanilla.

Lorna waited until the waitress was out of the line of earshot before turning her attention back to Cassie. “Okay, I couldn’t figure out how some people seem all alright with this whole shit show, but good to know some are still not completely comfortable with it.” Maybe people learned to just accept it like some mutants had learn to accept they were never going to be welcomed in the world, but she wasn’t that type of person. No, she was a fighter and if this place though it’d break her, then it had another thing coming. Lorna caught the fact Cassie made at the name Nick, raising an eyebrow, but she knew what it felt like to have people prying for information. If Cassie wanted to talk about this Nick, she could, but Lorna wasn’t going to push on that. Bad enough some of her questions might make the girl uncomfortable without the Nick ones.

“You may not have your Division, but this place could bring anyone from my organization at any point in time. There are a few people in that organization who are much worse than others.” Lorna left out the part about how it could also bring people from other groups like the purifiers or the long list of others who hated mutants. Sitting back in the chair, Lorna pulled one leg up on the booth with her. “How does this place hurt you and fuck you up? Yeah, well most people tend to find it’s easier to run from me than deal with me.” Expect for a few people who were now either dead or weren’t on the same side as her anymore, hating her probably for what she did, but she did what was needed for their kind.

Cassie grinned. "Same. It's weird having three square meals and food basically whenever I want." She was kind of close to getting used to it though, which wouldn't bode well when she was returned to her world. Still, her parents had gone back often enough that she fully believed there were no memories of Madison that stayed when they were sent back.

"Not everyone is from as fucked up a place as we are. The supernatural folks get it, the vamps and weres and wizards and crap, but some of them have been here for five years." Cassie shrugged. "Time has a way of making it happen for some people, whether they want it or not. And honestly, if your organization people show up? Say something. There's a shit ton of superheroes around here, most of them friends with my adoptive parents, and they won't let anyone come after you for long." There was always the off kidnapping or invasion but people banded together to deal with the problems as they came up.

Cassie picked at her sleeve, cleaning off invisible lint as she tried to figure out where to start. "Think about it this way. We're rats in a cage and sometimes the experiment is just how to do we live our lives here. Other times? It's how do they handle the gates of Hell being opened up or having potential future kids dumped on your lap or the people you care about getting sent home. And sometimes for that one? You don't know if it's for a day, a week, or a year. Sometimes they come back and they remember. Other times they come and they don't remember ever being in Madison." And Cassie was pretty sure she knew which one hurt more if Molly was anything to go by.

The fact that this kid found three square meals weird was upsetting to Lorna. Adults? Lorna could care less about their problems unless they were mutants. Though if the mutants were ones who harmed their own kind, then once again they were on their own as long as Lorna had a say. She wasn’t Marcos who believed in the best of people, she saw the world for all the ugliness. But when it came to kids whether they were human, mutants, or just people with abilities, Lorna had her softer side.

“I figured that based on how some people talk. It’s sometimes easy to spot the ones who are dealing with the fucked up situations rather than not,” it was harsh but the truth. Or at least from her home it was easy enough to spot the freaks like her. “If they show up, I’ll be fine. I’ve been dealing with them and other groups for a while, nothing for you to care about. But uh, thanks for the suggestion.” Lorna counting on people wasn’t something she did unless it was her few friends back home. It took a while for her to even count on them after everything in her life. The idea of anyone even wanting to help her was a joke as it usually came with a price or something up their sleeve. Though Cassie seemed for real, it didn’t mean the people she was talking about were; however, she wouldn’t say that aloud.

A sigh left her lip, tired of being an experiment to people. Tired of having to feel trapped or like she was some big game to people. “Seriously? Great, sounds like a bucket of fucking fun,” she rolled her eyes. The only future kid she could see from her end was the one inside her; however, from how this girl was talking, Lorna was pretty sure it’d find a way to twist that in some way. “Has that happened for you with the sending people you care about home?” Lorna was a little curious since she was sure all of that was hard on a person, but probably harder for some or maybe even easier for the people who avoided getting attached because of the fear of losing people. Lorna sat up a bit more again because this kid was a tough girl who probably could handle anything that was tossed her way, but Lorna also knew what could happen with that on the wrong question. “Look, I’m sure you probably don’t want to think or talk much about it, but would you mind if I asked you just a few questions about your home world?”

Pushing a piece of her green hair back, Lorna decided to offer up something she probably wouldn’t do for anyone else. “In exchange, you can ask me anything about mine and I’ll be honest with you.”

Cassie didn't connect with people very easily, hardly ever really, but she liked Lorna. She didn't trust her just yet, but she liked her enough to answer her questions. The offer for help wasn't one that she expected would be welcome or even used, but she made the offer all the same. Sometimes it helped to have a play when desperation took away every other avenue. She wasn't even sure if they'd really become friends or anything. It was possible that they'd never interact again or that it would be the sort of thing where they only talked to each other when something truly terrible happened.

"It happens to everyone if you're here long enough," she replied, "and a couple of times to me. My adoptive parents get sent home too often, along with people from their world. It's never good when it happens either." It was always terrible and it always screwed her up pretty bad. She was getting better at not completely spiraling, but there was always that chance that they'd be gone forever and Cassie knew she wouldn't be able to handle that.

Their food came and Cassie waited until the waitress left before she nodded. "Alright. Tit for tat. I can do that. What do you want to know?"

John was the people person, and it was why Lorna often had him known as the leader of the Underground because she didn’t need all that hanging on her. Lorna may have been co-leader but she didn’t mind being seen as the bad guy, calling people out for their shit, or being the hardass when it came to training. Then again none of that mattered anymore since she had left the Underground. This kid was probably the first person in a long time that Lorna found she liked rather quickly, which was an achievement. Maybe it was the personality Cassie had that won Lorna over rather quickly, but no matter it had Lorna sold on the girl being one of the decent ones.

The fact this girl had dealt with her adoptive parents being sent back only to come back couldn’t be easy. Even more so when it seemed Cassie had the same issues as Lorna on letting people get close, then to lose the people who were able to get close it just couldn’t be easy. “Of course not because I’m sure this place doesn’t want to send you back for the good stuff, only the bad,” Lorna said with a slight shrug, sighing softly. “You probably have a bunch of people here who you’d rather go to, especially since you just met me. But if they get sent back even for a day and you just need to get out for a bit you can hit me up as long as I’m still here.” Lorna didn’t think Cassie would take the offer; however, Lorna still tossed it out on the table. If the girl ever wanted to take it? Great. If not? Then that was fine as well.

Lorna waited until the waitress was out of earshot, taking a sip of her shake as she made a small approval face. “Not bad. Anyways, my question. Back in your world, where are your parents?” It was a question she knew could spark some emotions; however, Lorna had to know if the questions she wanted to ask were even going to have answers or if she’d have to go a different route with what she wanted to know.

That she made the offer was important. Cassie didn't connect with people very often and certainly not very easily, but she was learning to trust her gut again and her gut was telling her that Lorna got it. There weren't many people who did, at least not in the way people who grew up the way they did. Her parents were great and they had their own experiences that were similar in a lot of ways but not really. Maybe that was just because they were a lot older so it seemed like they had their shit together way more than Cassie. All she did was nod to acknowledge the offer and would keep it in her back pocket.

"I don't know my dad. My mom got picked up by Division when I was five, been on my own ever since. My mom's a Watcher like I am. We can See the future, possible ones anyway. It could be for five minutes from now or five years from now, and it could change like that." Cassie snapped her fingers to indicate as much. "And sometimes I don't See anything that makes sense until I'm in the moment, or even not until after. I don't have the same kind of control she had. Has. She's supposedly still alive but-" She shrugged, not really sure if she could even believe it anymore.

"I've never been home. Not since I got here two years ago." She had no idea what was going on back home and without Nick or anyone else from there, it wasn't like she could figure out what she was going back to. "I got my mom's file though. There was this thing a couple months ago and everyone thought the town would get shut down for good and we'd all be sent home. After, people got stuff. I've read most of it." Cassie wasn't really willing to talk about it though, got really closed off about it and buttoned up because her mom had basically been tortured to put it nicely.

"So. Just how bad is your Sentinel Services?" she asked, changing things up. It was partly to get some information since forewarned was forearmed and all that shit.

The fact Cassie knew the offer was always on the table was all that mattered to Lorna. Honestly, she didn’t expect to ever have Cassie use it, but the offer was always around. Plus she wouldn’t push it because Lorna knew if it was her and someone was pushing, then it’d put her on edge more as to what the hell the person wanted. There was being nice and then there was being too nice, which usually meant someone wanted something or at least that was how Lorna saw it.

Lorna was semi-glad her ability had nothing to do with futures or stuff because she honestly didn’t think she could handle it. More so if the future she saw was only bad for her kind, it’d only piss her off each and everytime. The part that hurt was listening to her about her parents, thinking about how it could be for her own child once they came. What if the child never got to meet Marcos? What if the child had to grow up without her around to protect them? All possible thoughts that were valid in her world because it could happen. “Couldn’t have been easy on your own at that age. I guess that’s one way to make up for having everyone believe they’d be sent home.” Most of the people seemed to have made a life for themselves here, which probably made that little game a little hard to deal with or at least Lorna was assuming. “Is the file from Division?” Lorna could tell from the body language the file was a touchy subject, which was why she left most of it alone for the time being.

At the question on Sentinel Services, Lorna picked up a fry to chew on for a minute, thinking it over in her head. It was only fair to be asked the tough questions when she was asking them right back. Finishing what was in her mouth, she shrugged slightly, “Depends on which level you’re dealing with. You have the ones that go on the field to try to capture us, using any methods necessary while trying to bring us back to their base. Which sometimes they have the cops as their bitches to do their dirty work,” she crossed her arms as she shifted slightly, thinking to the cops who had no problem firing at her group. “The ones on the field have some fun little weapons they love using on us, but if you get captured you usually end up either in jail where they try to throw you to the wolves...I know that first hand. Then depending on if you piss them off enough or who you might be, then you might get sent to a different section, which they turn you into lab rats for their own fun.” Lorna knew both of those fairly well for different reasons. She was in the jail, but she also was almost sent to be used as a lab rat; however, her friends had been used as lab rats. John’s best friend Pulse was used for the Hound program, and the thought made her slightly sick to her stomach, knowing those people could turn mutants against one another.

Snapping away from the thoughts, Lorna bit her lip in thought as she knew the question she wanted to ask; however, she wanted to word it better than the way it was in her head. “Do you ever dislike the fact your parents brought you into that world when it is that way?” It was Lorna’s biggest fear with her kid, and hearing from another kid who was brought up in a shitty world....well she was hoping maybe it would give her some peace of mind.

Cassie just shrugged. It was what it was and she was who she was. Nothing was going to change that. "It is," she replied about her mom's file, though she was unwilling to talk about it any more than that.

"Division does that," she replied. "But they turn everyone they capture into lab rats." From her tone of voice, it was pretty easy to connect that dot to her mother's file and come to the conclusion that her mom had been experimented on. "Division wants to use our powers for themselves and enhance them. Join or face a fate worse than death." Cassie'd rather have a bullet between her eyes than be captured by Division.

"I don't like that I was a means to an end. My mom Saw that she needed to have me to make the future turn out the way she wanted, to free her. She got picked up when I was five. I don't think she ever really wanted me for me." Cassie hadn't even needed a moment to think about it. "My mom and dad here? They love me even though I'm fucked up. They figure out ways around it, they're patient with me. I know I'm not the best daughter around, but they haven't thrown me out or anything. I don't think my mom back in my world would even know what to do with me."

There was a beat and then, "Why did you want to know?"

Lorna could tell that was all Cassie was willing to offer on the file, which she could respect that, especially when she knew she had her own stuff she didn’t want to talk about. It was disgusting though how this place brought a file to this girl from the people who hated her kind. The thought of getting a file about any of her loved ones from her world was one sure way for this place to see how Lorna got when full-blown angry.

“Ours has various different levels and the only ones that turn into lab rats are the ones they see useful. Pretty sure I was going to become one with hopes of getting information out of me, but plans changed,” or more her people broke her out when being transferred to what she figured was going to be the end of the line for her. “Sentinal services don’t exactly agree with how they want to deal with us. Some want to use us against one another until we’re all dead, and some want to use our abilities for their own gain.” No way in hell would Lorna let them hurt any more of her kind, and it was why she could live with taking down the plane because a part of her hoped that meant the Hound program was gone, but if not at least it was done for now.

Hearing what Cassie said about her mother broke her heart, glancing down slightly at her food. Lorna thought about when she first found out she was pregnant, the fear that came from the news. Only as she thought more about it and even now, Lorna knew she’d do anything for her baby. All she wanted was to make sure her world was better for the kid she had, wanting her son or daughter to grow up in a world where they didn’t need to feel scared of who they were and to know their parents would do whatever to keep them safe. Then adding in the fact both Lorna and Marcos both wanted to make sure they gave their child the family they never had. “Everyone is a little fucked up. Some more than others,” Lorna pointed out. “But I’m glad you got parents like that here. I think you turned out pretty great and anyone would be lucky to have you as their daughter.”

When Cassie asked her about why she wanted to know, Lorna took a bite of her burger to use that moment to think about how she wanted to approach this question. Even though she wasn’t really ready to be open on the whole being pregnant to the world, Cassie had been nothing but honest with her. Last thing Lorna wanted to do was lie and break the trust she had forming with this girl. Finishing what was in her mouth, she sighed softly, leaning forward slightly. “Look this stays between us, got it? I’m pregnant and...well you’re a smart girl I’m sure you can fill in the rest.”

"Sounds like you're better off here," she replied. "For now, anyway." Hopefully Lorna wouldn't find herself surrounded by Sentinal Services anytime soon. That would just be their luck if it did come to pass, but Cassie would hope that the Dome was on her side for this onetime.

She did bristle a little at the compliment because Lorna only knew her for a little while, not nearly long enough to know her so well as to say things like that. She didn't fault her, though. Cassie was lucky and she had come a long way. It was probably just that they were connecting on a more serious kind of way than Cassie usually connected to strangers. Sometimes it just happened that way, like with Briar and with Phil. He was busy with his real family though so she didn't bother him much these days.

"Well. My dad works at the clinic. He'll keep it quiet if you want him to." Not that it could be kept quiet for very long, but the option was there if she wanted. "Secrets around here have a way of either blowing up in your face or making yourself miserable. So if you need to talk and crap..." Cassie let that hang in the air as she dug into her food.

“To a certain degree it is a bit better for the time being,” it’d be even better if Marcos was around here. Even with them on opposites sides and him mad for her destroying the whole plane, Lorna needed him around. The baby when it came needed their father, and the fact he wasn’t here it was weird to her.

Lorna took note about her dad working at the clinic since she knew it was a place she’d have to visit sooner or later. Back home, the medical care wasn’t exactly top notch, but here maybe it could be different for her kind. The fact Cassie had abilities and her dad was a doctor gave her a slight bit of hope; however, the voice in the back of her head was sitll telling her to be careful. “Yeah, well this secret is not one I’m ready to have be known yet. I know it will have to come out at some point unless I get to be one of those females who don’t show, but most likely not,” Lorna knew at some point she’d start showing, then it’d be harder to hide. Right now though she was still small, and that was being used to her advantage.

“Anyways, eat up before the food gets all cold and gross. I think we did enough questions for today.”She nodded before taking a sip of her drink, then picked up the burger in front of her to enjoy the meal.
