Who: York/Carolina/Wash/Church
What: Waking up post www
When: Monday morning
Where: York and Carolina's place
Warnings: oh the swearing and awkwardness
Status: Closed/in progress

Coming back online was like coming out of the dark. Humans never really could appreciate how much longer an AI lived for every second a human did. Church could do so much before one second clicked over to another that being pulled and stuck in the dark for a week had been like being in the dark alone with his other personalities for years.

Reconnecting to Carolina's memory unit and implants flooded him with sensory information he was no longer used to. It took time to adjust until he could work the hologram projector again. He projected himself out as a hologram while running scans fully intending to find that something disastrous had happened to keep him from both Carolina and Wash for a full week.

Only to find that there were too many people in the bed. Sure, he was used to having York and Carolina draped all over each other in the bed but what he wasn't used to was Wash curled around her from behind with an arm across Carolina to make sure he was touching York.

"You have got to be kidding me! You fucking pulled me so you could play menage a footsie with both your boys?" Church was livid which meant he was projecting his voice at full volume. Look at them sleeping there so peacefully! "HEY WAKE UP!"

Wash and Carolina both jerked awake which meant that she accidentally elbowed Wash as she reached for a weapon that wasn't there. Wash had already been moving back but the bed they were in wasn't really meant for three people so when he got elbowed he ended up sliding out of bed and landing on his ass.

"What?" Wash was a little confused at the change between going to sleep and waking up so processing wasn't working too fast.

York was comfortable. Maybe a little crowded, but definitely very content to be curled up facing Carolina, his arm across her and touching someone else warm and solid that his brain registered as being totally normal and safe. It wasn't until Church screeched that he woke up, certainly startled but not quite reaching for a weapon.

He took in Carolina and then peered over her to where Wash was on the floor before he leveled a glare at Church. "We didn't pull you, Church. We got sent to the wild west," he explained. He was way too tired for this and he just wanted to go back to sleep. Preferably with Carolina and he wouldn't really be against Wash sticking around, too. The memories of their time together were nice, still similar to their actual histories but a very different turn in life that he hadn't expected. It had worked for them, though.

Just as he was about to drop himself back down on the bed, he realized they had two other people with them for the past two weeks. "Chances that Madison and Delilah are somewhere in our apartment?"

"If you mean the bitch girl and the really weird one, then yeah, they're in your other rooms." Church's bioscans covered the whole apartment so he already knew that answer.

"Epsilon..." Carolina had that beginning of the axe murderer voice going because she was tired, and confused, and Church was really fucking loud when he was mad. She'd just spent a week with both York and Wash and now she wasn't supposed to have that kind of history with Wash and argh.

"Look I don't care I just spent years out of contact with no one to talk to but myself. And Charlie's off line too."

Wash sighed and now that everything was starting to settle in his head he got off the floor to at least sit on the bed. "We're sorry the dome decided to screw with things and turn you off for the week Church. It really wasn't our decision." And he'd like for Church to stay out of his head and memories for a little while now.

York was with Carolina on the fact that Church needed to calm down. It was way too early for the yelling and confusion, since it was difficult enough to merge the life of memories he had with the memories he'd gained by living that life in the west.

"That was most uncomfortable, I agree," chimed in Delta, who projected himself as well.

York sighed and pushed himself up to a seated position, glad that they at least were fully clothed. "It wasn't exactly entirely peaches and cream for us, but this is one of those things that the Dome likes to do," he replied carefully. "Being alone is rough but we're here now and that other life is just that. Another life." That last part was more for Carolina and Wash but Church needed to hear it, too.

Carolina always forgot how much time was different for the AI's from a human. It meant she was worried a little about Church and Delta. But hopefully being reconnected would help. "I'm sorry Church. And I'm sorry Charlie is out of touch." She hoped that didn't mean gone forever gone. She liked the girl.

"Yeah well you should be." Church made a sniffing sound and winked out of sight.

Carolina wanted to hold the blankets out and invite Wash back inside like she would have if they were still in the past but that was just too confusing so she didn't.

Wash didn't like not knowing what to do, and that tended to happen way too often. He just ended up nodding. "Yeah. Another life. At least maybe Epsilon didn't wake up Madison and Del."

Delta winked out of sight without a word, but he did inform York that he was going to have to be careful with Church for a little while. That was a given, but he was more concerned about Carolin and Wash right now to be able to focus on Church right now.

"We haven't heard cursing so I think we'll be alright," he replied with a half smile. It was really all he could muster right now with things as awkward as they were. York shifted so he could sit more behind Wash and put his hand on his friend's shoulder for support. Drawing him in for a hug just seemed like a bad idea given the history they'd just lived through.

"You guys alright?" His other hand went to Carolina's ankle because even with the covers separating them, he was just glad the three of them were together.

Carolina was so tense she could feel it singing along her nerves, it was almost the level of tension one got on the battlefield in a fire fight except instead of making her feel like she had laser sharp focus she felt like she needed to get up and move. "I'm fine." She didn't move her ankle out of reach. It was a step forward, not long ago she would have been up and out of the room to remove herself from all of this.

You really do know how to get yourself into interesting situations C. The comment was just in Carolina's head. He could tap into the memories now that he was back online of what happened and that was going to make things messy.

"Not now, Epsilon." Carolina's voice was moving on to something more like a growl.

Hearing the tone of her voice and knowing that Church was probably making comments in her head helped Wash a little. He put a hand over York's on his shoulder and squeezed his fingers but kept his hands to himself when it came to Carolina so he wouldn't get hit. He'd already hit the floor once and didn't want to go for a second time. "I think we're about to hear cursing in here if Church doesn't give it a rest. Other than that I think we're okay."

Confused, feeling guilty, and a whole bunch of other emotions but all right.

York bit back a sigh. Carolina was in a mood and the last thing he wanted was to make things worse but there wasn't any easy way out of this. It was a dangerous move to try talking about things while they were so fresh, but even he couldn't just roll this off his shoulders like it was nothing. He counted it as a good sign that Wash didn't flinch away from his touch and even returned it with a squeeze of his own.

"Church'll give it a rest. Even he knows when to back off." York definitely didn't want him in his head and felt badly that Carolina had ended up with him, but there was only so much they could do. He knew he was already asking a lot from her and the apologetic look he gave telegraphed his intentions before he even said anything else.

"It's a lot for me to process," he admitted. "Being the way things were with the three of us, the memories of it all." They could at least acknowledge that it was a lot to be remembering and dealing with. "I don't want to get up and deal with the rest of it if we're not all good." Everything else, they'd figure out. York wasn't willing to risk his relationships with the two people in bed with him, though.

Church could, and would, at times push Carolina's buttons until they'd end up in a screaming match but even he knew when he was pushing her into homicidal territory so he retreated with that feel of standing with his back to them to give her a little privacy. He couldn't take going dark right now after being off line for so long but he'd give the illusion of not paying attention.

Doing that let Carolina relax a little. Of course York was going to make sure they were all good before he'd let them do anything else. And it was a good thing because Carolina avoided and Wash bottled. The last thing she wanted was to be on bad terms with either of them. York did die on her back home and Wash might. Hell, she might die herself.

"We are all good. Aren't we David?" Carolina put a hand out to Wash first.

She only called him David when she was feeling very vulnerable or very unsure, like that day on the beach when he told her it was never too late for a fresh start. Wash took her hand, it was a little weird without armor or gloves on but still nice. "We're good Carolina. We're all a team, a family, no matter what." Feeling guilty could wait a little while.

Carolina put her other hand out to York once she had Wash's. "What about you York?"

It struck him as important that she called Wash by his first name, but whatever it meant, it was okay for it to be just between the two of them. York wasn't deaf, dumb or blind. He knew that if he wasn't in the picture or if Daisy wasn't, there was a good chance that Carolina and Wash could've made something for themselves here. Maybe that was why the three of them had gotten tossed together in that other life.

"Not as against it as I might've thought," he admitted, because York wasn't the sort to hold back when it came to the meat of it. "We had a good life together, even with a couple of strays." He gave each of them a squeeze and then shifted to pull Carolina closer to them so he could wrap them in a hug.

"I'm always going to love you guys." That kind of stark admission had always been true, but there was a lot more history behind the words now, a different kind that gave it new meaning or at least a different kind of weight.

It was just her way. She tended to call Church 'Epsilon' unless it would confuse people or unless she was being more sincere, letting more of her emotions show through. It was easier to do with the AI than it was with a human. "The strays really weren't any worse than having South and Wyoming along. At least no one told knock knock jokes." And was Madison's temper really any worse than South's?

"I'm going to miss it." Carolina loved them both, her friends, her team, her family...hers. She just wasn't good about admitting it although she'd kill anyone that tried to hurt what was hers without a second thought.

Wash was fine with the hug and staying close for a little longer. Back in Freelancer while training and fighting they'd all been close, leaned on each other, hell fell asleep in a pile sometimes out of exhaustion and no one wanting to bother to get up to have their own space because damn it that took energy and there was comfort in knowing there were others there with you. But none of that had been the same as this.

"We'll always love you too." And Wash was perfectly fine speaking for Carolina, she would take a lot more pushing to get any admissions out but if he said it and she didn't clock him one then you knew it was true. And she wasn't pulling away to hit anyone.

"Small blessings," York replied of being free of knock knock jokes. "Although...were knock knock jokes even a thing back then?" He certainly didn't know the origin, just that sometimes they were truly terrible.

York pressed a kiss against Carolina's temple when she admitted she would miss it. That was equivalent to admitting her love for them and he understood why she didn't say it. "We're still yours," he promised her, knowing Wash would back him up on that even if things weren't how they'd been in that time period. The three of them would always have each others' backs and the bonds they shared wouldn't ever be broken.

"And I think it goes without saying that you're always welcome in our bed if you need it. Even if it's just for a cuddle." York was dead serious about that, even though he said it in a lighthearted kind of way. The two of them would always be there for Wash if he needed them.

"I...you know what I have no idea." The concept kind of derailed her brain for a few seconds so she shook her head and ran a hand over her face to force it to move onto something else.

"I know you are. Even if sometimes I don't know why I deserve you." Sometimes when she said that it was irritation and more like she was asking the universe what she did to deserve them. Right now it was very sincere since she'd messed up so many times over the years.

"That's a lot longer of a discussion than we probably want to get into right now." Wash knew she wouldn't believe him anyway. Carolina just needed time to get used to it and accept that they were hers and she DID deserve them.

"I might take you up on that sometimes." Wash meant it but things were already awkward enough he might not. "But maybe first I should work on being able to wear my armor without feeling like I can't breathe." He trusted them, he could trust himself to tell them when he was having issues now.

He'd do some looking on the origins of knock knock jokes some other time. It wasn't important right now. What was important was the fact that the three of them needed to be alright together in a way that wouldn't be to the detriment of them moving forward at least at the same capacity they'd been before getting sent to the old west.

York knew he'd be spending the next couple of days letting Carolina know all the reasons why she deserved them and why they loved her in their own ways. He couldn't help chuckling a little when Wash said that was a long discussion to be had. "Good news is, we have a good bit of time," he replied. Hopefully, anyway. So long as the dome let them have that time together.

"One step at a time," he replied encouragingly, and in a rare moment of physical intimacy, he pressed a kiss against the back of Wash's shoulder. "You'll get there soon enough." York knew full well how difficult it was to deal with PTSD and he'd felt a lot better once he'd gotten someone he could trust to watch his back at night. Best sleep he got now was sharing a bed with Carolina because he knew whatever happened, he wasn't alone. Wash wasn't alone right now and he wouldn't be for as long as they were there, and as long as Daisy was, too.

Wash would potentially regret telling them that because now that he admitted it Carolina would make him work on it whether he wanted to or not. "We'll work on it. You know I have a moment after I put my helmet on too."

That is such a lie Carolina, but nice of you to say it. Church kept his voice just for her and quiet in case she was going to get pissed off again. Carolina hadn't let almost dying in her armor slow her down any, she was kind of inhuman that way.

"Thanks." Wash really didn't want to work on the helmet thing but at the same time he knew he had to. And it might as well be his idea to do it. "We really should probably get up and make sure that Del and Madison aren't out there killing each other or something." He didn't want to break up the closeness so he wasn't going to be crushed if they said it could wait.

York knew Carolina better than that but he also knew Wash. It was a big step to even admit as much so he didn't call her out on it. They'd just work together to help him get through it because they absolutely didn't think any less of him for it.

"Yeaaaa." York looked over his shoulder at the bedroom door and then moved his pointer finger to his nose. "Not it." He did actually like both girls, but he liked their old west versions and he wasn't so sure how different they were in actual Madison Valley. He was more than willing to sacrifice once of his friends. He loved them, hands down, but even he was a little wary of teenage girls.

"You are such a pain." Carolina drawled that out with a smirk before poking him lightly on the nose. "I'll go take care of it." She knew if she didn't just volunteer then Wash would say not it too and she'd end up doing it anyway. It was just easier than arguing about it. "Look, stay, I'll be right back." She picked up a pillow and shoved it into Wash's chest before she started to get up.

Wash had laughed at York's opting out then oofed as he got the pillow to the chest. "Just try to leave them in one piece if they're getting into trouble."

York grinned widely. "Hey, this means more cuddling for us until she comes back." He was all about looking on the bright side and he definitely didn't want to get out of bed just yet. "And if you chase them out, there's no reason we have to face the day just yet."

The memories were still pretty strong in his mind and he wasn't ready to discard them right away, especially when they seem to actually help the two people he cared about the most. York shifted to let Carolina off the bed and then laid back down, his arms open for Wash to curl up with him however he wanted. If he wanted, anyway.

"Yeah, yeah." Carolina decided to channel a little Grif and shot them both the bird over her shoulder on the way out of the room to go deal with the possibility of houseguests. She hadn't heard anything yet so they were either gone, still sleeping or had never been there.

Wash wasn't quite ready to let the memories go. He really wasn't ready to go deal with Madison and Del if he didn't have to. Maybe Madison wasn't as harsh as she'd been in the old west but then Church had called her 'the bitch' which didn't bode well for her attitude.

That meant when York lay down he waited for him to get settled and then lay down with him with his head on York's shoulder and an arm around his waist.

"You know we will have to get up eventually."

York just grinned at his girlfriend and curled up with Wash in his arms. He definitely didn't want to get up and face the day just yet, especially if the day included Madison and Delilah. While he'd enjoyed the pair of them in different ways in the old west, his connections to Wash and Carolina were more important to him.

"Eventually could end up not being until tomorrow, you know," he pointed out mildly. That wasn't entirely true because they were going to have to eat eventually but he could hope. "No sense in rushing it."

The girls looked like they'd already gone so Carolina had just made sure the door was locked before heading back into the bedroom. It was a rather pretty sight in bed when she got back and Carolina paused in the doorway. They were hers, and she wished she could keep it like it had been for the last week but Wash had a life and she was just going to have to enjoy this while it lasted.

"I see we're being lazy." She made sure her expression was amused when she slipped back into bed to curl up against Wash's back so he was between her and York for now. "I approve even if that's not normally how I do things."

Wash was okay with not rushing. It was just cuddling together, nothing else, but he wasn't ready to face the real world just yet. "Grif would be so proud of you. The word lazy passed your lips and it wasn't because you were yelling at someone to stop doing it." He could feel her laugh against his back but then he yelped and ended up laughing himself.

"Okay, by the way she pinches when she's mad so I'm going to shut up now."

And that way if they weren't talking maybe the lazy pile of bodies would last longer. That would be a good thing.
