It was news that you never believed you would receive. It was news that no one ever wanted to hear when it came to those close to you.
Alfred had been shocked into pure silence when he had heard the news. There were no immediate words he could have provided for his wife and instead, Alfred had spent hours holding her. There was anger, fear, and sadness running through him. Anger that this fiend had not yet been apprehended. Fear that Susan could so easily be next. Sadness at the pain that Susan and those who knew Lena were feeling.
Part of him wanted to approach the Sheriff and his deputies and demand they allow him to assist them. Anything to help ease Susan's suffering. Though Alfred knew that would not be helpful to anyone. If something were to happen to him, he would never want to leave Susan alone.
This very evening, Alfred had taken over preparing their dinner. He had done so earlier in the week as well, not wanting Susan to fuss too much. She didn't need to. It was something Alfred enjoyed and was happy to provide relief to his wife.
"You should try and eat, my love," he said quietly as Alfred came to check on her and announce dinner.
