Her daughter was three years old; she and Cassie had been in Madison for nearly two years-two years that her husband would never see. Milestones like this, Sonya tried not to think of what she was missing back home. How some days she felt even more like a single parent, even with all the help she’s had.
Instead, she focused on celebrating her daughter’s birthday. Cassie herself was just at the age where she was understanding that this was all about her. She greeted everyone with a hi, and didn’t seem to mind that she if she didn’t win this game or that; it was her day, with cake, ice cream and presents.
The outside was easier to decorate than the house, and there was some pride in being able to show off her home, even from this perspective. At her daughter’s request, the theme of the party was Shimmer and Shine, the rest of the decorations taking shades of pink, red and purples. Sonya had deliberately set the time of the party just after lunch, so she wouldn’t have to worry about feeding everyone outside of providing drinks, snacks and homemade cake with ice cream. Along with food, given the age of everyone, she set up several games that children could play, arranging small toys or stickers as prizes. The rest of the time, she tried to make sure everyone was just keeping cool.
