WHO Evie & Peter Quill
WHAT checking in
WHEN May 1
WHERE Their kitchen
WARNINGS none!
STATUS closed | completed grocery
Having a dumb as fuck dad was really not cool. Mom being blue was pretty cool, but Andy Dwyer was not cool. After the first day, she sort of just went with the stupid and maybe took advantage of it with Jay. Still, now that everyone was back to normal, Evie wanted to make sure that Peter was okay with the fact that she'd referred to him as her father on multiple occasions. She'd referred to Gamora as her mother on many of those same occasions, but she had a feeling Peter was going to be the harder sell on it. Or else maybe she was only more worried about him rejecting her.
She found him in the kitchen, listening to music. None of that was a surprise and it did make her smile fondly. "Hi Dad," she greeted. That'd be a good way to get the lay of the land, so to speak, based on his reaction to that. Hopefully it wouldn't be awful. She had a feeling there was maybe a 50/50 chance of him freaking out on her.
***
The first thing he’d done when he was himself again was make sure he fit in his clothes again. Not only had he been a complete idiot but he’d been a few sizes bigger and had still worn his clothes. It was awful. Peter also needed to refill on good music because all he’d listened to the last few days was utter crap.
“Hey Evie.” To be honest since they’d both called him that off and on after the memory thing other than a little panicked pang of he wasn’t old enough (of course he was) he didn’t think much about it anymore. Or maybe it was just that Jay had called him that during their serious girl conversation just before he turned into an idiot. Whatever it was it didn’t bug him like it probably could. “What’s up?”
***
Well that was interesting. "You didn't even blink," Evie pointed out as she entered the kitchen. "No freaking out, no insisting you're not old enough. I'm kind of impressed. Maybe being stupid was good for you." She didn't actually think that, but there really wasn't all that many other explanations for the fact that he seemed to be fine with her calling him Dad.
She stopped when she stood next to him. "So does this mean you don't mind? Because I've been doing it more and more lately." If he was being a piece of cake about it, she worried what Gamora might say once she got around to bringing up the whole 'mom' thing with her.
***
“Being stupid was awful, that was horrible, don’t ever bring it up again because I know what you and Jay were doing now and you are so not nice when I’m stupid.” He pointed at her with a frown having understood some of the things they were doing while he didn’t know any better. “And I am too young. But you know...guess that doesn’t matter really.”
He sighed and pushed his hand back through his hair. “I don’t mind. I mean Jay called me that just before the whole dumbification thing too.”
***
Evie grinned. "Hey, it was too good of a chance to pass up," she replied, pretty unapologetic about that. It was in their nature and she knew Peter respected that in some weird way. "It doesn't matter because you're not that young, Dad," she teased. It didn't really matter to her whether he thought he was old enough to be a dad or not, so long as he didn't mind that she called him that. Maybe it didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things because he acted like her dad regardless of what she called him.
"I have to say, I wasn't expecting you to be cool with it," Evie admitted. "I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm glad you're cool with it because you've been acting like my dad a hell of a lot more than anyone else ever has. I just...wasn't expecting it." And maybe there was some of her own vulnerability coming through there, but he was her dad. It was okay for her to be a little vulnerable with him in a way she wasn't with other people. This was a different kind of vulnerability.
***
He totally respected that she’d done what was in her nature. And hell if it had been him he probably would have been worse than they were. “Dude, don’t call me old. Not cool.” Peter frowned but she could tell he was kind of laughing at the same time.
The conversation with Jay helped. He’d been worried about losing his family or he wouldn’t have tried to suggest telling Gamora she and Peter should get married. It didn’t matter that he wasn’t ready to be a for real someone gave birth to them dad Evie and Jay were family and he treated them and protected them like they were.
“That’s me, expect the unexpected right? Like I told Jay, we’re family and that’s all that matters right?”
***
Evie wasn't nearly as innocent as her smile might have suggested when he said it wasn't cool to call him old. It was definitely cool to call him old as far as she was concerned, but that was what a kid was supposed to do to her parents. Her smile softened when he said that they were family and that was all that mattered. She wholeheartedly agreed and she moved in to give him a hug.
"It means a lot," she told him. They didn't do the touchy feely stuff as a rule, memory loss situation notwithstanding, but some situations called for it. Evie thought this was one of those times when it was alright to give in. She just wasn't going to examine that too much. "You're pretty good at being a dad," she added. He needed to know that.
***
Oh he knew he was in for being called old at any opportunity it would be amusing for her and Jay. Peter would probably pitch a fit once in a while for being called old but he’d try to deal with it.
“I know growing up none of us had a family really, or a family that we understood.” He meant he and Gamora too. He had his mom and Grandfather until he was eight and it took a long time to understand his relationship with Yondu. Gamora had Thanos. “So thanks. You and Jay are pretty good kids. In a cool and semi bad sort of way.” He wasn’t great at sincerity, it was a good thing they didn’t do this all the time.

The thing was, her Mom wasn't really all that bad. Yes, she had an insane obsession with apples and with appearances, but Evie knew it could have been a lot worse. Maleficent was easily the most terrible parent anyone could have. That was why Evie had pushed her best friend to leave the Isle behind and to be her own person. Mal was brilliant, beautiful, and so much more than what her mother wanted her to be.
Things in Madison Valley were so different, even from Auradon. Half the time, Evie wasn't sure what to do with herself and the other half of the time, she was with Warren, Mal, Jay, Carlos, and sometimes even Jughead lately. It was starting to feel more and more like a home.
"You and Mom aren't half bad either," Evie replied as she gave him one last squeeze before letting go. "I think this might be the closest I'll ever get to having a home." And it meant a lot, but she'd said that already. Instead of saying it again, she went over to the fruit basket and pulled out an apple.
"Do you think she'll be alright with the whole Mom thing?"
***
He just wished he could have his ship and they could leave this place sometimes. It would be great to show them all the stars but then they might not be like he was. He’d wanted to leave Earth if his mom wasn’t there he just really hadn’t wanted it to be by kidnapping.
“I don’t know Evie. I mean every time I try to guess how Gamora is going to react to something I’m usually wrong, I think she does it on purpose. I know that you and Jay are the reason she stayed here. If it was just me she’d be out like her hair was on fire.”
***
“Well, at least that’s something. See what your gut reaction is and flip it.” Evie felt like maybe she got to see a different side of Gamora, or maybe it was because she didn’t have the same history with her mom that her dad had.
She did chuckle when he said Gamora would’ve left without a second thought if it had just been the two of them after the memory loss thing. “I asked her to stay,” Evie replied. “Can’t you guys just sleep together and get it over with? You guys care about each other.” She didn’t believe that you had to love someone to sleep with them, but caring about each other was important.
***
“Yeah, but you can’t push her. As soon as you do you get a busted nose and see her running. Trust me my nose has been the recipient a few times.” He rubbed it unconsciously then realized what he was doing and grinned sheepishly. “It’ll happen, just got to give it some time.”
Gamora had already made a promise not to hide big things from him and was sleeping in his bed. Peter was pretty sure it would happen they just needed a little more time. “I mean she let me take her to naked prom, so progress right?”
***
Evie rolled her eyes at him. "Haven't you learned to duck by now?" She totally got what he was saying, though. Everyone had a certain approach that would work best with them and Gamora's wasn't nearly as straightforward as Peter's. She moved around him to grab chips from the pantry and then took a seat at the table so she could chat and munch at the same times.
"Hey, I'm all for whatever progress keeps you two out of the house and without your clothes." Evie realized what she said a moment later and made a face. "Ugh, okay. Let's just pretend you took that the way I intended, and not the way it sounded." Luckily, they weren't actually related so Evie could comment on their sex lives - or lack thereof - without it being weird. Or at least, too weird.
***
“Have you seen how fast she is?” And no, he hadn’t learned to duck either. Peter would probably always be an easy target for Gamora and he knew it. He finished off his drink while she was getting chips and slid it to the side.
He couldn’t help smirking for her comment but he behaved because otherwise she might retaliate by bringing up her own sex life and he’d have to put his hands over his ears and say la la la really loudly. “We’ll get there. This thing’s been there a while so I don’t think it’s going anywhere.”
***
"I've seen how slow you are," she countered with a chuckle. It was entirely good natured though, not mean. Evie liked Peter too much to be intentionally mean to him. She looked at him thoughtfully when he said he didn't think whatever was between him and Gamora would go away anytime soon.
"You know I'm only ragging on you about it because I care, right? Jay and me, we don't need normal or conventional. As long as you guys treat each other right and us? We're good." She and Jay would defend their guardians just as fiercely as they were defended.
***
“Hey that’s what the Guardian’s do. If Rocket was here you’d see the full scale ragging because we care wars that go on.” And Peter actually wanted to see what they would do if Rocket was around. He was sure the raccoon would be trying to one up everyone all the time and make them crazy.
“And that’s good because pretty much nothing with us is ever going to be normal.”
***
"Rocket's the klepto raccoon, right?" She liked hearing stories about what Peter, Gamora and Groot got up to in their world because it kind of made her think that would be what her and her friends would get up to once they were older. That was just another reason why she was glad she and Jay had ended up with them.
"I mean, I don't think there's much in Madison Valley that's normal, either," Evie pointed out. Which reminded her. "You know, Carlos' guardian got sent home a while ago, didn't he?" She'd just completely lost track of it in all of the crazy that had been going on lately. "I hope we get an actual break before the next thing," she added. They needed it.
***
“Yeah that’s definitely a good description of Rocket.” He snorted in amusement because he’d called Rocket a hell of a lot worse than that but he would definitely back him against anyone else. And it was a good thing she liked to hear the stories because Peter liked to talk about himself and his crew. Mostly himself.
“Is he okay where he is?” Peter hadn’t really realized it but he probably should have. “I mean if he needs couch space he’s got it. But if he’s good maybe we just won’t tell anyone.”
***
"I guess," Evie answered with a frown. "I'm pretty sure Carlos is still mad at me." She'd only been trying to help and sure, maybe she hadn't been as delicate as she could have been, but it was all so that he'd be happy. It just cut out the middle part where he wondered if he was gay or not. If she told him, he'd find someone faster, or at least that was what she'd hoped. Now he wasn't really talking to her and his guardian got sent away.
"I'll ask Mal to check in on him. He knows he can stay here whenever, or with Mal and Birkhoff. I don't know. It's just lame." She shrugged and gave him a look that clearly said 'what can you do?' before she got up from the table. "Anyway. I've got work and stuff to do." Evie went to give him a hug though, and a kiss on the cheek. "I'm glad you're back to being you, Dad."
***
“I’m pretty glad I’m back to being me too.” She’d figure out stuff between the two of them, Peter wasn’t going to try to get involved unless something came up where if they didn’t figure it out it would suck a lot for the situation they were in. “I never want to be an Andy Dwyer again, that was awful. And sadly I know you took videos but I will forgive you eventually.” He gave her a pointed look before he finally laughed.
“Go do whatever you have to do and stop making me feel old, and maybe we’ll have pizza later for dinner or something.”
