Holden didn’t necessarily mind being on Earth. He’d spent twenty years on the planet when he was growing up, before he’d shipped out with the UN Navy. Then it had been the Cant, and then the Roci, and he actually hadn’t been home since he was that fresh UN recruit. It was a strange feeling. And this...well, it was different than the Earth he knew. There wasn’t any worry about overpopulation like back home (well, yet). There wasn’t such thing as Basic, really. Everybody worked and earned what money they could. He could see that as being both good and bad. People starving was obviously a bad thing, but people working and being productive with their time couldn’t be anything but good, could it? It was Earth, though. He could feel it in the gravity pushing down on his bones and muscles, in the smell of the air, in the feel of the dirt under his feet. And it felt like coming home. However much he wanted to be back up there, in the stars, with his crew and the Roci, Earth would always be home. The homeland of all humanity, whether they’d stepped foot on it or not.
He’d just finished at the store and was heading back home with a large bag of fruits and vegetables. He also had fresh meat, and cheese, and all the things that were incredibly pricey or simply impossible to find back home. He was going to enjoy everything while he could. Why not? It was here to enjoy and one of the few benefits of being here. That, and the cheap, amazing coffee. That couldn’t be said enough.
Stopping at the crosswalk when he saw the red light, he looked over and saw a person he didn’t recognize. It wasn’t all that strange - he hadn’t been here that long. He nodded to them politely.
“I’ll never get used to cars that run on internal combustion,” he said with a shake of his head.
