She wasn't sure what time it was, but Kate only woke up when she felt a wet tongue licking lovingly at her face. The very real smell of dog breath made her face scrunch up and Kate opened one eye. Lucky gave a few happy whines and it was hard not to give him a tired grin. How long had she been asleep? It didn't matter. What did matter was that for the first time in days, Kate had managed to sleep. There were no shadowy figures lurking in dark corners, hands pulling her away from her safe spot, the looming face of her father barking orders that made her ears ring, or visions of watching everyone she cared about and loved die in front of her. She had enough of those memories when it came to Cassie. Kate didn't need to add to it.
"Easy, Lucky," Kate groaned, reaching up to give the dog a much-deserved scratch behind the ear. From the way the sun was filtering in through the drawn curtains, it was well past morning. Maybe even past noon. Rubbing her hands over her face as she sat up, Kate went for her phone.
"Damn, it's Tuesday?" She let out another groan, frustration apparent as she worked out the kinks in her neck and shoulders. It seemed she had just collapsed onto the floor where she had once had an area rug. There were empty cans of energy drinks and coffee cups all over the place. They were joined by take-out containers. Some were empty. Others? Well, Kate wasn't sure how old they were at this point.
There was relief that her text messages were fairly quiet except for the notification on the network from Mitchell. It wasn't a surprise, but the guilt hit her hard. Harder than she was expecting. Kate knew she'd need to have a conversation with him. She would need to have a conversation with a lot of people she had shut herself away from for a week now. Kate only hoped they would understand. It was times like this that she remembered why having connections and relationships were more trouble than good. Maybe Clint had a point in keeping himself distant from people.
"Come on, Lucky. There has to be something around here we can eat, right?" Kate started to collect herself and a few empty cans. Lucky's response, which included droopy ears, was one Kate could agree with.
