Thor felt like his world was changing, again. So much was happening. And he could not but hope for more good changes, even if even those were a little overwhelming. But he had Sif, and Mercy, Sigrun, and Setsuna, Nora and Darcy. He would not fall. He stood in his room as he spoke with this new arrival, this Torvi. And he smiled. More and more of his people arrived. More and more of those who were of his blood, his faith, his life. He had never wanted responsibility, but taking care of, safeguarding, and protecting these people? That was as natural as air to him. And felt right. More right than anything else he had ever done. And so he did it. And he smiled to himself as he spoke to her, and hoped she would let him simply aid her. He waited for the words that would let him act. *** Torvi wasn’t sure she could believe this man who claimed to be one of her gods. She had heard of them wandering among their people, but never as themselves. She wasn’t sure how to handle it beyond testing the theory. He had said say his name. And Torvi, being as cautious as ever, had her axe in her good hand, her bad one bandaged still tight against her side. Then she, ever so carefully, spoke. “Thor, you gave me permission to call your name. I wish to see if this is true.” *** From afar, Thor heard her, and he smiled. With a suddenness, he let the call draw him and power flowed in him, he arced into the sky, lightning leaping from below and above to carry him through the clouds, a soft thunder arcing with him toward the distant call. A moment later, a torrent of soundless lightning crashed to the Earth before Torvi, and out of it stepped Thor, glowing for a long moment before the lightning faded, and he nodded to her, smile broad. “Welcome, Torvi of the North. You have called, as the ancient compact asked, and by its word, I, Thor of Asgard, answer.” His voice started out echo-ey, and slowly came down to a more normal tone, and his smile was that of a man who loved to smile. *** Torvi stared in wide eyed wonder. She hadn’t really believed him - after all why would a god be stuck here? But there he was, right in front of her. She forgot how to speak, he was unlike what she was expecting. More smiling. She blinked slowly then let out a breath. “I do not have words for how surprised I am.” she said after a few false starts. She would hit the ground but her arm was still hurt and she didn’t want to try to get back up. But she did let go of her axe, he wasn’t likely to hurt her and he was real. She felt that in her bones. *** Thor smiled softly and kindly to her. “Worry not. Words can be hard, sometimes.” He swept her a bow, one hand to his chest. He was impressed by this woman and found he hoped she and Bjorn had good life ahead of them. He waved toward her arm. “What happened to your arm, my friend?” *** Torvi was having a hard time not staring at him. She just was finding it hard to wrap her mind around this whole thing. “Especially when you are standing face to face with a god.” She said carefully before looking at her arm then up at him. “I took an arrow in it before my arrival here. Bjorn pulled it from me.” *** “You will find, I think, that gods are not quite what you think. And when you do, I hope you will be merciful.” Thor cocked his head to the side and considered her. He nodded then. “Will you trust me, and give me the gift of letting me heal you, Torvi? Will you let me do this much for one of my own?” His voice was gentle, with a peaceful tone to it, and his eyes held only compassion. *** “I think you're right. Though that's to be expected to some degree, after all, we are human. Tales take a life of their own after a time. It should not matter, you are still a god, asking me for mercy is backwards.” Torvi stared at him for a long moment. “It would be acceptable.” She swallowed, hard,”and proof enough you are indeed who you say and not just some figment of my imagination” not that his entrance hadn't proved it but still. “Will it hurt? Not that I mind, I'm just curious.” *** Thor smiled softly at her, eyes illuminated by faint internal lightnings. “Perhaps. I am not a very normal god.” He chuckled. At her words, he nodded gladly, eyes warm. “No. It will feel odd, like how the air feels in a storm where the thunder and lightning roar. But there will be no pain.’ He stepped forward, glad she had decided to let him do this, and laid a hand gently on her arm, and bent his head to kiss her forehead. As he did so, a roll of lightning, not painful, but tingly, shiveringly, present, more real than anything else, filled her and him both, closing off the rest of the world. It was not bright, or loud, but it was at the same time, as he let his lifeforce roll over her, carefully, gently, his presence engulfing her and washing away her pain, her injury, making it as if it had never been. Bruises would fade and the wound turned to but a scar on either side of her arm, a soft little scar on either side in the form of a bolt of lightning. Her tiredness would be gone, and her body would be full of energy, of life. Then the lightning was gone and he was stepping back, ‘There. Thank you.” *** She watched him warily, the thought of it feeling like the air during a storm was an interesting thought. Bright blue eyes watched him as he leaned forward and kissed her forehead. A little gasp of surprise as she felt the power wash through her. She pulled the neckline of her shirt out of the way and looked at the scar then up at him. “No, thank you.” She said breathlessly, eyes wide. She couldn't deny it, he was really who he said. “I'm… in awe.” *** “It is ever our duty to aid and protect, to soothe and heal, to guide and guard, our people. It is our calling, and our pleasure to do so. I am glad to be able to aid thee, dear lady. While this world is not our own, and there may be times when even I cannot act to aid thee, i will be there for you, and yours, anytime, any way, I can be.” He spoke the words softly, but with a rumbling undercurrent that was final, sure, and full of promise. The sky almost seemed to echo his words with an almost gentle-sounding roll of thunder, and he chuckled, looking upward. “Inclement weather comes. Strange events, and stranger people. Remember to keep yourself and yours safe. And Fear not to call my name. I will come or send one who can.” *** Torvi looked up at him and smiled a bit. “I am truly blessed. It is not everyday you are granted aid by ones gods. I am truly grateful to be the recipient of such things. You are kind and just.” She bit her lip then nodded. “I dream of strange things. I am sure that it is as you say, I wish the Seer was here to guide us, but no matter.” She said softly. “I should not keep you. I am sure you are busy. But I am truly thankful for your understanding of my need to test you.” *** He smiled back at her, warmed by her smile and her belief. “I do my best.” Thor nodded to her, bowing. He listened to her, and nodded. “Seers can be elusive, perhaps we will get one here. In time.” He nodded to her. “Always. Call on me and I will come. “ he smiled again, and stepped back from her, seeming to grow a little bigger as he did so. “I always have time for my people. Small or large reasons, I will come.” And then the lightning reached from Earth and sky and touched him, and he was gone, leaving the sound of his laughter, warm, like rain. *** Torvi stood watching him go with wide eyes. She really couldn’t believe that this had just happened. She couldn’t wait to tell Bjorn and show him. He would feel just as honored as she had, no doubt about that. She smiled a little then turned to go find that device, that phone, and reach out to her husband. This place was full of surprises and it was a wonderful thing. She was never more of a believer than today. It was a good day. *** |
