Just when Zari was starting to settle in this place, she was back to wanting to be anywhere else. She was cranky and sleep deprived, all because the dome or whatever was trying to mess with everyone. Again. She didn't like this. Not one bit. The nightmares were bad enough, but not being able to go anywhere to escape made it that much worse.
The nightmares were the same every night. Her brother Behrad, as a child, kept asking her to read him a story like she had when they were little. She told him he wasn't real, but he insisted he was and needed her to make him feel safe.
That's when the nightmare shifted to the night ARGUS showed up and murdered him. She'd been helpless to do anything, so she fled. Though there was no escaping what came next.
Zari, why did you leave? We could have fought them together. Now I'm gone...our family is gone. You shouldn't have run.
She shook her head. No, this wasn't possible. It couldn't be real.
You don't have the right to wield that totem. It should have been mine.
Zari yanked the totem from around her neck, offering it to him. She'd rather he have it if it meant he was alive. But he refused it.
It's too late. Goodbye, khaahar.
"No, don't go!" she exclaimed tearfully.
That's when she realized she was awake now, at Starbucks, where some of the other patrons were staring at her like she lost her damn mind. She must have dozed off right at the table. Caffeine was of no help what so ever.
"Uh...move along. Nothing to see here," she told the room of people, feeling mortified the whole time. "Eyes on your crappy, expensive coffee drinks."
She sighed, burying her face in her hands, a very poor attempt at hiding. She just wanted this to end.
