She slipped out of the house just after Midnight. Everyone inside appeared to be asleep, or well on their way to it, and Anna needed some air.
She'd never really gotten used to sharing space with people besides her mother. At least not since she'd been turned. She and Pearl had traveled with Katherine Pierce for years, and occasionally Katherine picked up strays, new people she'd turn on a whim. But sooner or later it was always back to the three of them, and then eventually Emily Bennett, as well. If there was one person besides her mom that she actually missed from years passed, it was Emily. Emily had looked after her for years after her mother had been locked in that damn tomb in Mystic Falls because of Katherine. Any and all alliances she'd had with her sire had ended that day. And then Emily, too, had been killed, and she'd been completely alone.
Anna walked down the quiet street, her own steps silent as she moved. There were advantages of being a vampire, and being rather stealthy was definitely one of them. She'd been doing this every night since they'd moved to this house, even though she was fairly certain the others didn't know. She walked at night, making sure there was no one around, lurking and waiting to ambush them. There were a lot of people in this town, and she trusted very, very few of them. She wasn't accustomed to staying in one place for very long because staying in one place for long tended to get people killed. Namely her. But now? Now she had others she was actually looking out for.
It was quite an assortment that had gathered together with her. Three other vampires, one banshee, and a very human, very off-limits Jeremy Gilbert. And while they all might have been able to hold their own in various situations -- better than most undoubtedly -- Anna was the oldest of them all. The strongest physically. And that made them her responsibility. She'd willingly taken them all in because this place was too dangerous, too different and yet familiar, to leave them to their own devices. It had started out as a feeling of duty. She felt she owed it to Jeremy to look after his sister, and by extension, Caroline. She wasn't even sure what had made her want to help Lydia, except that maybe it was because she was so young and so alone, and Anna could relate to that. But somehow, she'd started to think of them as her family. It was unsettling to think about. The people she loved always ended up dead.
And Anna really didn't want to lose anyone else.
She circled the block slowly, scanning the trees for any sign of movement or sound but saw and heard nothing. She was getting nervous. She had been since the day Jeremy had shown up there. It wasn't that she wasn't glad to see him -- she was thrilled, really. But she was starting to doubt her ability to keep him, all of them really, safe. There were wizards here, and incubi, and witches, and who knew what else? A lot of people were terrified of vampires. Wanted to turn them over to the council. She didn't want any of them, especially Jeremy to get caught up in the middle of that if it happened. She started back toward the house, her stomach tight with anxiety. She didn't think things here were going to get better. Not anytime soon, anyway.
Maybe it was time to move again.
