Oz had really gotten used to being with Hermione every night. There was just something comforting about sleeping next to someone in a bed that was bathed in both of their scents. It was probably the human/werewolf equivalent of being in a den together. Especially with as cold as it had been recently. Oz was still a California boy at heart even with all of the traveling he’d done and snow was more of something to be endured instead of enjoyed.
It probably went back to Tibet and the fact that it was so cold in the room they’d given him that he’d had to break the ice off the water to get a drink. And if it was really cold they liked to drink tea with butter in it so the fat would help keep you warm. It wasn’t a taste he was ever really going to dig.
Despite the sleeping together being comforting there was just something off this morning. It was hard to get comfortable and Hermione’s hair kept getting in his face...a hazard that did happen sometimes...but when he opened his eyes there was a haze of coppery red instead of Hermione’s light brown.
“Huh.”
***
Hermione was just as fond of ending her day in the same bed as Oz. Especially with how busy everything was, getting the shop ready to open on Saturday, it was just what she needed. Every morning, she felt re-energized and rejuvenated, regardless of whether Oz was wrapped around her, she was wrapped around him, or they were on opposite sides of the bed. This particular morning, she was laying on her stomach, her arm flung over his shoulders and her head facing away from him.
She stirred shortly after he did, hearing the ‘huh’. Hermione just assumed it was her hair getting in the way and turned her head. “Sorry,” she murmured as she shifted onto her side to get more comfortable again.
“Five more minutes,” Hermione added, her eyes closed once more. They could do five more minutes.
***
They could do five more minutes but now that he was awake the inconsistencies he was coming across were poking him into investigating. He lifted his head and decided the red hair still belonged to him but it was way too long. And there was definitely some differences from how he’d gone to bed and now.
“Hermione, wake up.” He had boobs. This was just...weird.
***
Hermione stayed curled up next to Oz for another minute or two before finally opening her eyes. "Alright, alright. I'm-" Woah. She sat up kind of abruptly because it finally registered just what was wrong.
"Oz?" She thought it was him, because he was the obvious answer, but he was now a she and that was so weird. "Why are you a girl?" Hermione was very confused, which probably meant he was just as confused, if not moreso.
***
“Because Madison Valley?” He seemed to be about the same height and size just with curves and girl parts instead of what he normally looked like. The long hair was going to be annoying. Why that had to change along with the anatomy was curious.
“I just woke up this way.”
***
Now that it was very clear that her boyfriend was a girl, Hermione couldn't help but laugh. "Well, this is a new one," she teased. As crazy Madison Valley things went, she had to say it wasn't the worst either, especially since nothing happened to her.
"You're kind of cute," she added, reaching over to help him situate his hair so it was out of his face. "Do you feel any differently, aside from the obvious?" Hermione wanted to make sure there wasn't any negative effects to this gender swap of his.
***
“Can’t say as I’ve done this before.” He sat up after she helped him with the hair and realized that he’d gone to sleep in just sleep pants so of course he was more interestingly half naked now. He ended up reaching for a shirt with a quiet chuckle.
“Well I feel oddly more exposed with my shirt off now. Does that count?”
***
Hermione didn't find women to be particularly attractive, but she could admit that he was visually very pleasing. "That definitely counts," she replied sympathetically. "Do you still feel your werewolf side?" She didn't think he'd somehow switched bodies with someone else in town, especially since he woke up in their bed, but had he lost his werewolf side as well?
She used her magic to transfigure his shirt to fit better around his newfound breasts. "I don't think I've been affected by whatever this is," Hermione added, now that her magic proved to be working just fine. "We'll have to see if others are affected too."
***
“Yeah the werewolf side is still there.” He had settled the shirt a little after she tailored it, that was a damn useful thing she could do! Oz was always amazed how there was a lot of practical things the magic could do and not just what you usually thought of for magic.
The silver and charms he always wore were still on thankfully and he’d done a habitual motion of touching each of them to verify their presence. Not that he really needed them as much with the centering and grounding the wolf side he’d discovered but better safe than sorry.
“Glad it’s only one of us at a time. It gets weird when it isn’t.” Like when he and Veronica had decided they were in love. That had been a little embarrassing afterward.
***
“I think this qualifies as weird no matter what,” she replied. “Though I will be worried if it’s just you in Madison that’s been messed with. I don’t think it’s particularly good to be singled out by the Dome.” It seemed that it was only his physical outward appearance that had changed though, so maybe if it was just him, it wouldn’t be so bad.
She was silent for a few moments and then sighed. “I suppose we ought to get up, then.” There really wasn’t much of a chance she’d be able to even doze off again, not with the possibility that the Dome was acting up again. “I can transfigured your clothes so they’ll fit your body,” she added, though it probably went without saying. Hermione would always use her magic to help Oz, however she could.
***
“Yeah I don’t like the idea of being singled out.” Oz wasn’t really sure yet how he felt about being a girl. Which meant he was doing his usual thoughtful frown. Only in this body it looked a little more like a pout which he would hate when he found that out.
Her offer at least got rid of the frown and he smiled. “Let’s see if anything fits first. I hate to alter the whole wardrobe then have to do it back in a few days.”
***
The pout was adorable. Hermione has to cover her mouth with her hand to stop it from being too obvious because there was no way he’d like being a pouty girl. That just wasn’t the sort of person Oz was. It was nice that she didn’t feel disconnected to him even though he was now a woman.
Hermione leaned over and pressed a kiss against the corner of his mouth, more because of the angle than anything else. “You know I can just change them back once you’re back to normal,” she teased. She climbed out of bed and began rummaging through her own drawers to find something to wear. “You know, is it bad that I’m kind of curious how many people are going to hit on you before they figure out who you are?” She immediately pictured Sirius trying to flirt with Oz and not getting anywhere. It was kind of funny just to think about.
***
“Are you saying I’m hot?” Oz had stood up but then tried to look at himself to judge if he was good looking or not. As a guy he didn’t think he was exactly ugly but he was short, and had red hair and wasn’t exactly conventionally good looking so it wasn’t something he thought about a lot. “And I know you can change them back it just seems like a lot of work for a few days. Or maybe not because it’s magic.” Out of curiosity he went to go look in a mirror and see what he looked like now.
“Well, I definitely have freckles.”
***
Hermione laughed at him then. "Objectively? You're very attractive," she replied as she came up to stand behind him as he looked at himself in the mirror. "But I definitely prefer you as boy." She rested her chin on his shoulder and took in his appearance. She did like the freckles though.
She flashed him a smile from the mirror and then went to get him at least a bra and underwear. "Okay, start with these and let me know if you want me to resize anything. It really isn't any trouble at all," Hermione promised. Even if it was trouble, she'd still do it for him. Oz was that important to her.
***
“I prefer me as a boy too.” Oz had a lot more practice being a boy after all. Intellectually he hadn’t really thought of his gender being part of his identity but he was starting to think maybe that wasn’t the case. It was something to think about with all of this. “You realize I really only know how to take these off right?” Oz grinned at her when he held up the bra she’d handed him. It seemed like being handed a puzzle to figure out with the idea of fastening something behind his back.
***
"Just don't forget to sit down when you pee and I think you'll be fine," Hermione teased as she went back to her own clothes. She was halfway through putting her own bra on when he said he only knew how to take bras off. Rolling her eyes at him was just a natural response.
"You're a smart bloke, I think you can suss it out," she replied as she finished getting herself situated. "You could always go without, of course." Not that she'd recommend it, but it was an option.
***
And that fun fact brought up by Hermione made Oz stand still while his brain went over that and all the changes that his new anatomy would mean. He'd never really thought about all of the differences before. Of course that let him watch her put on her bra while he thought and it made it easier to try putting on his own. It still was a crazy exercise of figuring it out which made him amused if a little frustrated.
"Maybe I'm not as smart as you think I am."
