The New Year always put Jem in a good mood. It was a time of new beginnings, of new hopes. It was a chance to start over, and he always tried to take advantage of it. In 2017, he had finally gotten his center going, and he was proud of that. But more than pride, he was happy that he had a chance to help other people. Together with Tessa, he felt that they were making things better for the marginalized citizens of Madison Valley.
And in the coming year, who knew what would happen? He and Tessa and Will were considering having children. He didn’t know if it would happen this year, or later, or at all, but it was something ahead of them. And he was excited for what the future might bring.
He’d invited Haymitch to lunch today, just because he felt the need to keep in touch for one of the people he considered a good friend in this place. He arrived first, and was looking over the menu as he waited for Haymitch to arrive.

Haymitch had to admit that Christmas and New Year was one of his favourite times in Madison, it was nice to be around friends and family and to share good food and good times with them all.
When Jem had invited him for lunch he’d accepted straight away, while they worked together at the center they didn’t often have time to catch up with non-work related things.
Spotting him as he entered he made his way over, “I hope you’ve not been here too long” he said with a nod.
***
“No, not long at all,” he said with a smile. He didn’t mind waiting a few minutes. “Did you have a nice holiday?”
He certainly had. Every holiday in Madison Valley was another reminder of how lucky he was.
***
“I did thanks. It’s rather fun now Steph can get into it all a bit more” Haymitch said, “Did you have a good one?” he asked, knowing a little of the set up Jem had with Tessa and Will.
***
“Yes,” he said. “It was very nice indeed.”
Jem didn’t often go into detail about his situation. He was in no means ashamed of it, he just found no reason to make it public knowledge. In the time when he was from, you just didn’t do that.
“And now that the new year has begun, it’s time to try to make it better than the last.”
Last year would be hard to top, with all that had happened for him. But he would certainly try.

Haymitch understood that, privacy was something that was lacking here and he could appreciate wanting to keep things to themselves.
“That’s the thing isn’t it, keep moving forward and trying to improve on it” Haymitch agreed with a nod.
***
“It is. And things are already very good here, but they can always get better.”
There was a time that Jem hadn’t even imagined that things could get this good, but here he was thinking that he could even improve upon this.
“How are Darcy and Stephanie?”
***
Haymitch chuckled, “They’re good thanks. Steph is growing daily it seems, she definitely knows what she wants. Taking after her mother I think, not that it’s a bad thing of course” he added because at least he knew she’d be able to take care of herself as she grew up.
***
“Darcy is a strong woman, and it seems Steph will be too, then. That is good. Of course, I have always believed that women possess more strength than men could even conceive of having.”
He smiled slightly.
“I know it is true with Tessa.”
***
“Can’t argue with that. I’ve known some incredibly strong woman in my time” Haymitch agreed, “Damn impressive and why shouldn’t they be?” he smiled too.
