He'd shattered her heart in their previous fight, it had years to glue back together so it didn't break this time. But it still hurt. It burned like fire in her chest, but unlike last time she wasn't going to go on a destructive rampage. This time she'd taken a day to be miserable and work on the house before going to see Sara. And she couldn't even blame him. It had been her fault. Her own choices. Didn't mean she wasn't mad at him for holding it against her. It wasn't like he was a saint. But maybe Sara had a point. Being around might soften him up. “Told you I'd show up in fishnets and heels.” Her smile didn't reach her eyes but it was genuine enough. She wasn't feeling great, tired, sad. But she wasn't going to lock herself up in her house this time, she'd promised. That didn't mean she had to look at him, instead made sure her back was his way. *** Sara knew that Zee was having a hard time dealing with all the crap between her and Constantine and she wished that there was a way to fix things between them, but she realized that given their personalities and the situation, it was going to take time. Which sucked, but was a far better option than her interfering. “You look fabulous,” she said, smirking as she gave her friend a once over. “Having you around should be good for business.” And if Zee decided she wanted a distraction, there would no doubt be a plethora of men for her to choose from. *** She was having a hard time with it, it wasn't what she had expected or how she'd wanted it to turn out And while she knew that time was going to fix things it was waiting that was hard and when she sat down at the bar across from Sara, zee was confident he'd come around. “I told you I looked good” she teased, smiling. “Need a waitress? Or I'll just be a pretty bar decoration and watch you rake in the cash from folk buying me drinks” Zee smirked, she was sure if she wanted distractions she could find one but she didn't want to hurt him even more. *** “I will give you free drinks just to sit there and be something pretty for me to look at,” Sara said. That might be pushing the bounds of what Sam would let her get away with, but she also didn’t really think Zee would take her up on the offer. “What’ll you have?” The first round was definitely going to be on Sara. It was the least she could do to support a friend. *** Zee tilted her head back and laughed, a real smile in place for once. “Oh darlin, I can sit and be pretty for you to look at while making you money from everyone else buying me drinks.” She winked as she leaned on her arms. “You're hot, I'm hot, they can enjoy the view” “Oh we'll do a whiskey” then smiled warmly. “People pay to watch me make magically created elephants disappear, if you think I'm kidding, remember all showbiz stars are a little vain.” A little anyways. ** It was fairly obvious that Zatanna made a living by putting on a show. Sara had been around people like that before, had to sometimes pretend to be one of them to get close for a hit. She knew that it wasn’t always easy to wear a happy facade and that there could be a lot of darkness lurking underneath the surface. She wouldn’t push too hard, but she was certainly going to keep an eye on Zee. “Coming right up,” she said, grabbing a glass and a bottle of top shelf whiskey so she could pour a drink. “Rocks or neat?” *** There was a lot under the surface, she was hurting. Which meant when she put on a show it was elaborate. She was happy, truly, though, to flirt with Sara. And she would show up to both give her something pretty to eyeball and to get more money to pass across the bar. Zee liked Sara. And Sara, unless she was lucky and caught a moment, would see very little of just how hurting Zee was. She'd fake it like the very best. “Neat, who spoils whiskey with ice anyways?” She laughed softly, blue eyes glittering as she settled into the mantle of Happy Zee. ** Sara was well trained to notice more than people wanted anyone to see, but she also knew when to leave well enough alone and she knew it was unfair to expect Zee to get over her hurt so quickly. The fight with Constantine was a lot to process and Sara was willing to be a sounding board/distraction while she worked through it. “You’d be surprised,” she said, pouring the drink and sliding it across the bar. “But I’m glad I didn’t waste the good stuff by watering it down.” *** “Horrible people they are.” she muttered as she looked at her glass. “Who thinks spoiling top shelf with ice is acceptable?” she rolled her eyes. “Crazy people, that’s who.” she shook her head and lifted her glass to Sara before taking a drink. Zee had a lot to work through. “I promise not to be that person but I do have one question I want to bounce off you.” she wasn’t going to use her too much, it wasn’t fair to anyone. “Do I distract myself for awhile?” she kind of gestured to the whole bar scene, random drooling men included (Sara was always on the table for distraction, she was meaning everything else) because she knew sure as the sun rose that he would be. “Or do I wait patiently until he gets his shit sorted out? I don’t really… want to do anything to make it worse but I’m not exactly comfortable being bored to death. Maybe I would have been before, pinning away like some lovesick brat, but it’s not really my style now, sure, I’ll be happy as a clam in the ocean when he decides I’m the best thing ever, but until then..” she waved her hand lazily. *** “I’m probably the last person you want to ask for advice about that sort of thing,” Sara admitted. “But I think you should do whatever you want to do.” It was going to take a while for Constantine to sort his shit out and there was no reason that Zee should wait around alone for it to happen. Especially when Sara was fairly certain that he wasn’t exactly being celibate. Besides, if he got jealous knowing that Zee was hooking up with other guys, maybe he would finally confront his own feelings. *** Zee was thinking about the same. “No that's kind of what I was thinking anyways. I don't have time to just sit around.” Maybe,.just maybe, Zee could enjoy herself and win at the end of the day. She knew him well enough to know he was handling it all with a flavor of the week or drink or both. She might as well enjoy herself too, right? “Thanks Sara, it's just what I needed to hear.” *** |
