Finch couldn’t stop worrying about Katie. She knew that there were lots of people in Madison Valley who were willing to help. There were lots of people here who cared about her daughter, and who had powers. And they’d all tried to assure her that nobody here would give her a hard time for being different, and if they did, that was their own problem.
And Finch wanted to believe that.
But she knew what it was like to be different. She’d been the weird, painfully shy one in school and she’d never forget how miserable that had been. She’d give anything to save her daughter from the misery of being strange and different.
But what could she do? She couldn’t take away Katie’s powers, no matter how much she might want to. And those that said they were a part of her were right. She didn’t know any different. And Finch somehow knew that she’d miss them if they were gone.
But there was no point in worrying, for now anyway. Not that it would stop her. She just knew she had to stop obsessing over it, and let time pass and see what happened as Katie grew older. Maybe when she started talking in real sentences they’d be able to discuss it. And maybe they’d even be lucky and she’d manage not to do anything with her powers by then that she couldn’t take back.
Right now, she was leaving walmart with several bags of groceries when she saw Sam heading inside. She smiled at him, and headed in his direction. It always felt wrong not to greet Adam’s brother when she got the chance.
“Hi,” she said as she approached. “Did you have a nice Thanksgiving?”
***
“Oh, hey.” Sam moved to greet his sister in law with a hug. He kept it brief, then stepped back to give her space. “I did,” he answered. “We did. We ended up at Tea’s. She’s got a new house and all. I think it meant a lot to her to have the meal at her place.” And it meant Sam didn’t have to cook. He didn’t mind it really, but it was nice not to feel pressured.
“What about you?” he asked. He cared for Finch. She was his brother’s wife, which made her family. But not only that, she was a kind, caring soul herself. Sam knew she’d had a difficult life before she met Adam, she was glad his brother could help her find peace and happiness.
***
“Yes, we just had a quiet time at home.” Well, as quiet as they could have with a toddler. They’d found that it was actually easier to just stay home and do things sometimes than to try to take Katie anywhere. It had nothing to do with her powers - it had almost entirely to do with the fact that she was an energetic little girl who liked to scream and break things. That wasn’t usually appreciated by hosts.
“I thought maybe we could have some people over for Christmas. You and Sara, Dean and…” she paused. “Whoever his flavor of the day is? Others. Whoever would like to come. Maybe some of the people who have helped Katie out.”
***
“That would be nice.” Sam nodded. He’d make a point to ask Sara about it. She had a lot if friends, and she might want to spend time with them. Sam was confident they could work something out, in any case.
As for Dean’s flavor of the day? Sam wasn’t even sure anymore. He honestly didn’t know if Dean was seeing anyone, if anything significant came of his relationship with Lena. Sam and Dean didn’t really talk about that kind of thing, or if they did it was awkward and generally full of sarcasm and what not.
“I’d like to get together with you guys more often in general,” Sam added. Katie was growing like a weed, and Sam felt like he was missing out on a lot with her. He was her uncle, he should be spending more time with her. And with his brother.
***
“I wish you would, too,” she said sincerely. “Katie needs to know her family, and I think it’s extra important for Adam to be close to you guys, since he never knew you growing up.” And his whole family had been ripped away. Maybe being closer with Sam and Dean could heal that pain - at least a little bit.
“I’m sorry we haven’t been able to invite you over more. With both of us in school and Katie to take care of, things have just been so busy. But it’s not because we don’t want you there.”
She’d also been worrying almost obsessively over Katie’s powers. They bothered her more than they did Adam, she was pretty sure. But she couldn’t help it.
***
“It’s no problem,” Sam assured her. He was the type to reassure even when he didn’t mean it sincerely, but he did mean it now. He knew how busy Adam and Finch both were. He admired them, going to school, going to work, raising a child. None of it was easy.
“I don’t invite you guys over either because my house is more often than not it’s own mecca of Crazytown.” Star and Marco were like human hurricanes running through the place. Sam wasn’t home a lot either, between his work and staying over at Sara’s.
He smield a warm smile. “But we should definitely make an effort now during the holidays.”
***
Holidays were always the time when families wanted to get together. She’d learned that in her time here. For Adam’s sake, she would have liked to spend more time with the Winchesters than that, but she’d take what she could get. Any time with his brothers was good for her husband.
“Yes...I’ve seen the girl with the wand on the network. She’s...energetic.”
She seemed nice enough, but she definitely was insane. At least that was how Finch saw it.
***
Sam smiled at that description of Star. “She is very active, that’s or sure. She and Marco keep me on my toes.” Especially since he had to make sure they didn’t try to take Barko with them if they were going anywhere other than the park.
“It’s nice, though. I enjoy having them around.” He was rather fond of the kids. He didn’t sit around thinking about how much quieter his life would be without Star around, anyway. But having her in his life didn’t make him inclined to have kids of his own.
“Maybe we could all get together for dinner. You and Adam could meet the kids. They’d love to meet Katie, I’m sure.”
***
“I’m sure Katie would like them, too,” she smiled. Katie would love the energy and craziness that Star had. Maybe she could even play along, with her own abilities. She liked getting her around kids who were also special. If she wasn’t alone, maybe it would be easier for her.
“I think that sounds like a great idea.”
She hesitated a moment before continuing, because she knew that this could be a little awkward. After all, Sam’s mom and Adam’s mom were not the same person.
“I saw that your mother showed up…”
***
“She did,” Sam nodded. Adam had a different mother, sure, but he was still every bit Sam’s brother. They didn’t have the growing up memories that Sam had with Dean, but that wasn’t their fault, and he didn’t hold it against Adam. He had a stronger history with Dean, he’d really only gotten to know Adam here in Madison Valley, but he considered Adam his brother in every way the mattered.
“You know she died when I was a baby. So it’s kind of cool to be able to get to know her.” There was a lot of awkwardness there too. “I wanted to give her time to adjust to being here before we told her about Adam, but I think she’ll love him because he’s John’s son.” And she did love John. Of course she didn’t really know how he turned out after she was gone, but still. She loved him, and Sam respected that.
***
She nodded slowly. She didn’t understand their relationship, aside from what she’d seen and what Adam had told her, but she knew that it was complicated and that there was a lot of feeling involved on all sides.
“I’m glad she’s here. I’m glad you’re getting a chance to know her.”
That was important, after all. And being a parent now, she was starting to understand exactly HOW important.
***
“Thank you.” Sam was looking forward to getting to know his mother all over again. He’d met her once when Cas helped Dean and Sam travel to the 1970s, but of course she hadn’t known who he was then, either. And she’d been in Madison Valley in the past, however briefly. This was a new slate, though, and Sam was treating it as such.
“I should get going, but I’ll take a look at the work schedule and see when might be a good time to get together. We’ll have to work around Adam’s schedule too, but I’m sure we can make something happen.”
***
“I look forward to it, Sam.” She really did. Sam and Dean were her family too, the only family she had here. And she wanted Katie to grow up knowing them, to grow up knowing that she had support and love, no matter what. That was important.
