I'm not going to be dishonest about this. I'm telling you who I am so that you can avoid responding to me if you want to. I won't be insulted. Hell, I won't know about it, I can't be insulted if that's what you decide.

I'm Lizzy Carrera. Seven years ago I got a physics degree from Caltech. Since then I've lived in Maine and worked in ICT. Last month I was driving through Indiana when I managed to get trapped in this town at the point the barrier materialized. I'm from this world and this time, but I'm stuck the same as you are. Me and my daughter, Francesca. She's three. I've been working with local government and trying to figure out what's going on in this town, but in some ways your guess is as good as mine at this point. It's going to take time.

I want to say you can Ask Me Anything, but that's not strictly true. Upfront, there are things I don't know, things I can't talk about or I'm not qualified to talk about. Also, I don't want to address scientifically technical questions in a public network discussion, because there's far too much potential for misunderstanding. If you've got the background and you want to discuss it, contact me.

Otherwise, I'll try to answer what I can.

Doctor Lizzy Carrera? What are you looking into more, popping this bubble or sending people home?

Not a doctor, no. Never went for the PhD, although in retrospect I'm starting to wish - actually, no I'm not.

Bubble-popping would be the first priority. It's probably the simpler of the two tasks, although simpler is an extremely relative term there. Try slightly less insanely difficult.

You know much about physics?

A little, yeah. My name is Shaun Mason, I am was a reporter for After The End Times am from 2040, physics has taken a backseat over biology.

Have you determined what the forcefield is made of? Or what's powering it.

What if what's powering it isn't here?

Yeah, exactly. Getting to it would be a bitch.

So you know I think it's the physicists, but setting that aside.

Whatever's responsible can clearly move people from one...place to another. It's possible for power as well.

Or it could always be the universe taunting us and it'd be 5 feet outside the fence and a labeled generator or something. That's about our luck.

That would be too easy, George. I don't know anything about digging, but assuming the forcefield isn't subterranean.. you know I don't actually know where I'm going with that.

Digging, Shaun? Really?

Have you had enough coffee this morning?

Because of Kellis-Amberlee in your time, yes. I've read the reports. It's good to meet you. Message with you. You know.

We've determined that it's an extremely powerful energy field, but the origin, power source and exact nature of it remain unknown. I know exactly how unhelpful an answer that is. Sorry. We're working on it.

Energy field. Is it particularly dangerous to approach?

Lizzy, if you like. I'm not much for formality.

It's not hazardous, we've ruled out cordoning off the adjacent area except for where the roads intersect. You wouldn't want to hit it at high speed.

Touching it won't harm you, but don't try to damage it. We're still running tests there.

I won't call you Ms. Carrera if you don't call me Mr. Mason.

That removes an element of lethal potential, but I guess any idiot could drive a car into a wall. What tests are you running?

Did I call you Mr Mason? Oh well. Shaun, then.

We're determining if the barrier reacts in any way to various stimuli. Heat. Pressure. Corrosive substances. A lot more besides. So far, all negative in terms of actually breaking through it. Personally I don't think the solution lies there. I'm looking at multiverse theory.

Huh, okay. A lot of magic is based on physics, it's the essence of the thing that makes it 'magical' though. As in, if I don't believe it can work it won't. But it still follows basic laws of physics, and I have a couple dumb ideas and some knowledge on energy fields like the one keeping us trapped here.

That's interesting. Maybe I should've picked you to meet with. I don't know if you're familiar with the role of the observer in certain branches of quantum theory, but what you're saying about belief - intent, really - I'm intrigued.

Do you have any texts detailing the scientific basis for your magic?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]thewinterknight

You start saying words like quantum theory and it goes over my head. I got my GED in the 70s. At home I have had books that talk about it, but that doesn't help here. I know laws of physics, sorta. But it's.. more applied than it is theoretical. Energy can't be created or destroyed, whenever I work a piece of magic I take the energy from myself or the world around me.

If that makes sense. It's easier to give demonstrations, but you know, magic.

Okay I'm not that old, I got it in the 80s. Same difference.

Yeah, I was born in the 80s...

Okay. I'll leave the...scientific terms out of it.

Harry

Maybe if you'd be willing to demonstrate I could derive the theory from the application? Maybe. Completely off the record, like - I'm not here to investigate magic.

Good question! My best guess at the moment is that it's some kind of wormhole mechanism. Einstein-Rosen bridging, you know, although they shouldn't be able to occur spontaneously like that...

Oh, wait, you're from 1500-ish, aren't you? Why? It's...science we can't fully explain yet.

I'm sorry. Uh...imagine traveling from one place to another, except instead of having to...sail there or something, there's like a tunnel? A shortcut? And you go through that and it takes you to your destination instantly.

It's like that, only instead of bringing you to another place, it's brought you forward in time. Probably to a different version of the future, but I won't overcomplicate things.

Does that make more sense?

[info]for_family

You can't put tunnels under the sea. How come you can go forward but not back? There are two ways into tunnels.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lizzycarrera
2013-09-01 01:27 am UTC (link)
Actually, we can build tunnels under the sea now. There's a tunnel connecting England and France that way.

What you're asking, though. They're not literal physical tunnels, I'm describing them that way because it's easier. The reason you can't go back is because after you've gone through the tunnel, it collapses in on itself. No way back.

How

That doesn't--

How are we supposed to return to our places? I have responsibilities. If the.. tunnels no longer exist how have people come from the same places? There are siblings and lovers who don't appear at the same time.
