“This! This! Make this!” Kate jumped up and down lightly as she held the recipe book up to Bucky. It was open to a page of cupcakes. Chocolate ones no less. “Make these! Make these, please!” By making them, Kate had every intention of helping Bucky. Unlike her older self, little Katie was excited to help in the kitchen. It was something she had done for as long as she could remember.
“Chocolate with sprinkles!” Scurrying off to grab a chair, Kate began pushing it over toward the counter with every ounce of strength she had in her tiny body. She had a determined look on her face, her tongue sticking out slightly, as she climbed up onto the chair.
“I will help you!”

Bucky had known right from the start that if he ever had a daughter, he was going to spoil her rotten. Molly was the perfect example because she got pretty much whatever she wanted and he went out of his way to make sure her favorites were always stocked in the kitchen. He'd gotten better at spoiling Summer to the same amount, but Kate was a whole other ball game.
"I guess we could make those, but I'm definitely going to need your help," Bucky replied with a grin as he helped her climb up on the chair. He kept his metal hand on her waist to keep her steady. "You have to promise to listen though. I don't want you to get hurt and Ms Pepper will be very angry with me if you get hurt on my watch." He was deadly serious about that because if there was one thing Pepper would absolutely kick his ass over, it would be over Kate.

Kate had taken a few minutes to inspect the metal arm. Little fingers studied each seam and plate, and she made faces at her reflection with a flurry of giggles to follow. When she was satisfied, Kate returned her attention to the cookbook and Bucky.
“No. No one will get hurt. No one will be angwy,” she said, making a concerned expression as she shook her head. Turning to the book, Kate patted the pages with both hands, looking this way and that. She was clearly pretending to be a great chef.
“We need in-ingeed-ingwe--we need the stuffs!” she proclaimed, putting her hands on her hips. “And this!” Kate reached for a mixing spoon, waving it a little in the air like a magic wand before tapping it a few times on the counter. “This is our baking song!”

Bucky didn't tense up under her inspection, but he wasn't entirely comfortable with it. He wasn't entirely comfortable with someone so young and innocent touching an instrument of destruction, but it was just Kate and she was innocent like this. She didn't see it as a weapon and he was kind of grateful for that. Especially when she made faces and giggled looking into the reflective surfaces of his arm plates.
"Good answer, Katie-Kate," he replied, fluffing her bangs so he wouldn't mess up her hair. Bucky didn't mind at all that she was dictating what they were going to do and he started pulling the necessary ingredients since he knew that by heart by now. "It's in-greed-e-ants," he explained, pronouncing it out slowly for her so she could learn.
"That's a pretty good baking song. Did you write it yourself?"
***
“No! We wote it!” She was finished with the song, though, watching him intently as he collected everything they would need. “Ingwe--ingrree-ingwedants!” Which was probably the best he was going to get out of her, but she was proud nevertheless.
“So we take dat--” she pointed to the flour. “And eggies and mix and cupcakes!” Pointing to the book, which had a few more steps, Kate smiled proudly. “And icing! And spwinkles!”
Which she picked up the plastic tube and gave it a light shake.

"Very good," he praised when she got the word mostly right. Bucky remembered how his Ma and Steve's Ma would always praise them when they deserved it. They'd always gotten boxed around the ears when they deserved it, too, but he'd never lay a hand on Kate.
He chuckled and gave her a little tickle. "I think you missed a few steps there, Katie-Kate," he teased. "But that's definitely pretty close to what we're gonna do. And of course we need sprinkles. I got purple, blue, and green icing for us to pick from," he added as he set all the ingredients out on the counter.
Bucky grabbed the mixing bowl and measuring cups and carefully measured out the necessary amount of flour. "Alright, can you put that in the mixing bowl?" he asked her.
***
"Nuh uh!" Even thought it was obvious she did, and Kate giggled as she continued to shake the sprinkles. Making a face, she shook her head as she pushed the green icing away. The blue followed. Of course she was going to pick purple over the other two.
Her attention once again on the mixing bowl, Kate set the sprinkles down to take the measuring cup into both hands. Flipping it over, she managed to get most of the flour into the bowl with a small little cloud to follow.
"I did it!" Which was followed with a light sneeze that Kate covered with her arm. It ended with just a little bit of flour dust here and there. So far so good!
