WHO Gibbs & OTA
WHAT Getting lunch
WHEN Wednesday afternoon
WHERE The diner
WARNINGS TBD, probably low
STATUS Open | Incomplete

Gibbs liked his job. He enjoyed working with his hands and making someone's life better. Now, it was more about building their house than solving the murder of their loved ones. He couldn't say he hated the change, even if he did miss his job and his people. It was good to have Em around to help him feel grounded, but most of the time he felt like he was just waiting Madison out. He was lucky he was a patient man. Since Emily's boyfriend's dad showed up with his gun shot wound, Gibbs was a little more curious, but that could wait until after he was out and about.

This afternoon, he found he had a little extra time between jobs today for lunch so Gibbs made his way over to the deli for something a little closer to home. Hinkles was great in a pinch, but he much preferred the diner for a nice ham and swiss sandwich on freshly made bread, dressed with just a little bit of mustard. A very large cup of coffee topped it all off and he had just taken his first bite when someone took the seat next to him at the counter. Gibbs glanced over at who it was and inclined his head in greeting.

Sonja also enjoyed her job, she loved working in the apothecary and how it reminded her of home. Sjre, she missed her mother and her sisters here. But at least she knew Natalia would be able to have friends in Madison and a life. Everything Sonja wanted for her, even if her daughter wouldn't go to St. Basl's, that is if Sonja was still in town by the time her daughter was school-aged.

Right now, she was just on her lunch break and decided to stop by thr diner since she forgot to pack herself a lunch. It felt like ages since she had last been in there, but yet still felt compelled to talk to people. She gave a wave to the gentleman. "Any recommendations?" Sonja queried, debating which sandwich she should get.

Gibbs offered her a small smile in addition to the nod of acknowledgement. She seemed the friendly sort and, if he was remembering correctly, she had a daughter who wasn't more than a toddler. He didn't post much on the network but he did read through it and kept up to date as much as he could. It was more to make sure their new home was safe than anything else.

"The ham and Swiss is pretty good," he replied, lifting his sandwich up a bit to indicate that was the kind he'd gotten. "Haven't had all the sandwiches they've got to offer, but I can say I haven't had a bad one yet." He always ordered off the menu exactly as it came because he wasn't picky and he figured whoever put the menu together knew what they were doing.

Sonja wasn't much of a sociable person on the network, herself, but having an almost two year old did deprive you of a social life. Even if Sonja did have a small group of parents that she did consider friends.

"That does look good, and it seems like they even have soup recommendations to match the sandwiches," she said as she glanced the menu. "I just haven't been here much, but figured I would stop in today since I forgot to pack myself a lunch."

"Seems as good a reason as any to stop in for lunch," he replied easily before he took another bite of his own sandwich. Soup was just as good and it was an easy pairing with a sandwich, so she wouldn't go wrong with that one.

"Hopefully, you'll find something that strikes your fancy."

"I'm sure I will, plus there really is no harm in trying anything new," Sonja said, probably a bit more brazen than the girl she was back home, but the two years she spent in town helped to thicken her skin.

"I'm Sonja," she told him, "it's nice to meet you."

"Gibbs, ma'am. Nice to meet you as well," he replied as he introduced himself. "Can't go wrong trying something new. Worst thing that happens is you don't like it and you have to get something else." He figured the good health rating meant she wasn't likely to get sick from anything she ate.

"Anything in particular catch your eye?"

"There seems to be so many I want to try, that I'm sure that I will have to visit again," she told him, "but I think I'll get the corned beef."

She paused for a second before continuing. "How long have you been in town, if you don't mind me asking?"

Amaar liked the diner too. It reminded him of Fatima's, just a little more western and a lot less likely to end in someone insulting him for not having a beard. It wasn't like a beard was a requirement to be an imam.

He'd been out looking for a couple things to take to the community centre on Friday, hoped a couple of people at least would come out to learn about and celebrate the Islamic New Year with him. And errands deserved a late lunch.

Sliding into a seat at the counter, leaning on his arms a little, he turned to smile at the man next to him, took the nod as what it was intended and as an invitation to chat. "You don't mind if I join you, do you?"

Gibbs was nursing his coffee and working his way through the crossword puzzle when another man came up and took the seat beside him. He still had some time to kill and getting to know people was never a bad idea. "Not at all, please," he replied before he took another sip of his coffee. He was nearly out so he signaled the waitress for another refill.

"I've been thinking about getting a piece of pie," he told the other man. "That apple pie over there smells way too good to not have a slice. What do you think?"

"Pie does sound really good," Amaar agreed. "I always liked lemon over apple but I guess it's coming into season." Fall and all that. It made sense, even if Amaar didn't actually know the first thing about anything like that.

He actually didn't know the first thing about a lot of things.

"Lemon's good," he agreed. He liked it more in the spring or summer, when he was in the mood for something fresh and tart. "They have different pies every day. Maybe if you're lucky, they'll be lemon tomorrow." When the waitress came over to refill his coffee, he asked for a piece of apple pie as well, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

"Thank you, ma'am," he said, just as the waitress turned to the other man to take his order. "Any chance you've got some lemon pie back there?" Gibbs asked.

"I think there's one being made right now, actually. Would either of you like a slice?" she replied, glancing between the two men. Gibbs looked to the other man.

"Yes please!" Amaar immediately beamed. "And some tea if you don't mind." He was very polite.

As soon as the waitress headed off to do that he turned to the man beside him. "You didn't need to ask, but thanks."

And then he was just offering a hand. "I'm Amaar."

Since he'd done something nice, that deserved at least getting his name.

Gibbs appreciated the guy's manners toward the waitress. It wasn't very popular these days to be kind to waitstaff in general, so it was noticeable when someone was.

"Gibbs," he introduced himself, shaking Amaar's hand easily. "And sure, I didn't have to, but now we both get to enjoy a slice of pie." It was the little things in life that brought joy in Madison Valley and it never hurt anything to ask. "How're things going for you today?"

Amaar's usual waitstaff had been a member of his congregation and not someone who took any attitude. He missed Fatima. He missed everyone. But he was doing well here, so far.

"Good, good. Just taking a long lunch to do some errands for Friday." He'd have to go back to the office a little later, do all the paperwork. Junior lawyer, it was on him to do all the mundane things.

"Friday?" He couldn't remember exactly if he'd seen anything on the network that was special about Friday. "Well, errands deserve pie far as I'm concerned," he replied with a shrug. He didn't have to remember everything happening around town and it wasn't like he was angling for an invite. That wasn't the kind of guy he was.

The waitress came back with their pies and Gibbs gave her a warm smile. "Thank you, ma'am," he said to her before he dug into his warm apple pie. There really wasn't much else like it. "This, a steak, a beer. Can't go wrong with that, no sir." He was a man of simple pleasures.

"Friday, yeah. It's the new year." A beat and he realized he needed to explain that a little more. "Islamic New Year."

Amaar had, initially, been a little more hesitant to go around just telling people he was Muslim. Americans didn't exactly have the most accepting of reputations, and a name like his could draw enough trouble. So far, everyone had been very accepting, some had even been interested in learning more, and so he'd decided to just not care what anyone thought.

Gibbs' expression didn't change with the clarification. Sure, the majority of Muslims he dealt with at the other end of his interrogation table weren't innocent, but he knew better than to lump everyone in with the extremists.

"Happy New Year," he replied easily. Gibbs hoped the guy had family and friends to celebrate with, but he wasn't going to ask on the off chance that wasn't the case. No sense in bringing attention to it.

"Think that means your pie's on me, and I warn you, I'm a very stubborn man when I want to be." He'd be stubborn and sneaky about it if need be.

It wasn't the case, but Amaar was looking forward to it anyway. People were coming to the community centre and making an effort to understand someone else's culture, bridge the gaps as it were, and that was all he could dream to ask for.

"Well in that case, thank you," he said with a laugh. He wouldn't have turned down free pie anyway. With a sudden thought, he held out his hand. "Amaar Rashid."
