Pietro often found himself awake at times when others weren’t, his metabolism and everything else was sped up so much that he didn’t need to sleep as long most people did. So he often got up and went for a run to get rid of some of the pent up energy, thankfully he was good at not waking up Alex when he needed to go out.
Slowing to a jog through the town he noticed somebody else was out and about, which hardly ever happened. “Hey” he said with a smile and a nod when he got close enough to be heard.
***
Billy raised a hand to smile. “Morning! I don’t see a lot of people around these hours. I hope the morning is treating you well!”
Stranger or no, early or not, Billy was bouncy and happy to meet someone new. Working at the bakery, doing something he loved to do, and having most of the day to himself after was a nice thing. He always felt rather bouncy on the way to work.
***
“Good morning, it is a nice one so I cannot complain” Pietro grinned, “It is unusual to see someone out and about, most people are still snoring in their beds. Are you a restless sleeper or do you have an early job?”
***
Billy smiled at the man. It was nice to see someone cheerful at this hour.
“I work at a bakery, so I get going early, and get done early, before the day has a chance to get hot. I get to make very good food, and enjoy hearing about people liking it, then go home and sleep.”
Billy was full of cheer about it.
***
“Sounds like you’ve found the perfect job for you here” Pietro smiled, “I will have to stop by, I think the people I live with would appreciate freshly baked goods for breakfast. I make them myself sometimes, I am usually the first one up”
***
“I think so, too. I love it.” Billy smiled at him. “Absolutely! I’ll even give you a discount! I usually take some home when I get off shift. And hey! What do you like most as breakfast type sweets? I always have to chose what I concentrate on. I would love some inspiration, if you have a favorite?”
Billy loved his job, but every day he tried to do something new or different, and so he could use, occasionally, an inspired choice.
***
“That is kind of you, thanks,” Pietro said, before thinking about the question, “Have you ever heard of vatrushka? It is a sweet yeast dough with a cheese filling, sometimes people add raisins or fruit or sometimes you can swap cheese for jam if you want something sweeter” he explained. Very happy to offer up something which could be something new.
***
“I have not, but I have a multicultural database in the shop, I should be able to look up everything, including time to cook, and I know we have all of the ingredients.” He nodded, grinning wider.
“I can definitely start a batch of each this morning.” He liked doing new things, and if it made someone smile, then all the better.
“I’m Billy. Still new to this crazy place.”
***
“That would be wonderful. It has been a long time since I have had any” Pietro said and he knew Wanda would appreciate them too. It would be a wonderful surprise.
“I am Pietro, not so new to the crazy. I have been here more than two years now. It has been good if strange”
***
“Good! I want to be able to make things people want to see and taste, not just sit on the shelf and maybe get picked because there is no other choice, you know?” Billy smiled. He loved to cook, and to help people, so being able to combine the two was perfect, in his mind, anyway.
“Pleasure to meet you, Pietro. And I can imagine so. Just the little I’ve seen has shown me how weird this place can be. I like it, even if it is sometimes unsettling.”
***
“That is a good thing to do. And means you get a good reputation with customers” he said with a nod. Being able to try new and exciting baked goods was also something Pietro liked so Billy’s bakery would be getting a new regular customer.
“You too Billy. Weird is definitely Madison but for me it is better than home”
***
“Thanks. I hope so. I like making people happy. What’s the use of being a baker at the bakery if other people don’t like what you bake?” Billy smiled, feeling even bouncier than normal.
“Yeah. So far, I like it a lot too. I’ve got nothing really waiting for me back home. This place seems a lot better frankly.”
He knew he could relax here, most of the time. He didn’t have to live two lives.
***
“I will be happy to help you out. I like eating and I’m very good at it, so I will let you know what I like most when you make new things” he grinned, he would happily offer his opinion when it came to food.
“Me too. Back home there is nothing for me” literally nothing since Pietro was dead there, “Here is good. New friends are good too, especially bakers” he added.
***
Billy grinned. “Thank you.” He would be glad to ply Pietro with foods to try. Billy liked baking a lot. It was fun and creative, and it produced yummy food. What else could one ask for in a hobby?
“Well, then, new friends are definitely what we are. I’m still slow to make friends here or have been, so I can use all the friends I can get.”
***
Pietro appreciated good cooking, he did a lot himself but that did not stop him enjoying that made by others.
“Then it is settled. Billy and Pietro will be good friends” he said simply, Pietro liked this man. He was straightforward and Pietro appreciated that.
***
Billy nodded and offered his hand. “And on that note, I should get on to work. Come by within a few hours for those baked foods, though, okay?”
He grinned. This was a very good morning.
