The woods were the part of Madison Valley that scared Beth the most. It had taken her a while to figure out why, but it made sense as soon as she thought of it. The woods were the place where everything looked the most like it did back home. The town, with cars and people bustling around, was nothing like her world was now. There wasn't even really a comparison to be made.
But the woods...they hadn't really changed, and so her mind was on full alert when she was on the woods, always looking for Walkers, and even more terrifyingly the few people who had survived. They were more dangerous than a dozen Walkers, because you could at least predict what the dead were going to do. With people, you weren't that lucky. And in a world like hers, everyone was out for themselves and kindness, mercy, and altruism seemed very much to be a thing of the past.
Still, it was a beautiful spring day, and she wanted to go for a walk. She wanted to hear the birds...the wind in the trees. She wanted to enjoy nature and all the life that was around her. So she swallowed the discomfort and fear and headed to the woods anyway.
She hadn't walked very far into the woods when she heard something. It was too big to be a squirrel or a rabbit, but other than that, she couldn't discern what it might be. Her entire body stiffened in response, provoking a fight-or-flight reflex in her. She'd learned that running back home didn't do a lot of good, so she grabbed a stick from the ground and prepared to fight.
"Whoever's there, say something, or I'm going to run you through!"
