It had been a very good long while since Granger had asked for James’ help learning to become an Animagus. He’d agreed to do it, of course, but it had taken a lot of preparation, and a more than a dash of creativity. An essential part of the process, the mandrake leaf, wasn’t exactly easily found in a muggle town, and they’d had to find something with similar magical properties. Or effects. James wished very badly for Remus; his mate had been much better at potions than he was, would have been a lot of help, even if he thought there probably would have been several lectures about the danger.
She was ready to start the practice now, he thought. She’d made the potion, cast the incantation daily, if it was going to work, it was time to start trying.
So James took her out to the woods, called a mossy rock a makeshift bench and sat upon it, hands hanging loosely between his knees.
“The first transformation is the hardest one,” he advised. “Don’t be too up in arms if it takes a few days to get it.” If it was going to work. That was such a big if.
