Second only to seeing his own son, possible son, one he hoped he’d get to see born someday before too long, was seeing the beautiful young woman Stephanie would grow up to be. He loved Darcy’s baby like she could be his own, and he was elated to see that she was healthy and happy and just like her mother. Maybe he’d have liked her to be a little less just like her mother, but Steve did love his friend just as she was too.
He knew that this whole thing wouldn’t last forever, that they were running out of days for him to spend time with the teenager. He knew because he’d seen this happen before, a few times now, knew the way Madison Valley was. And today seemed like as good a time as ever, after the slight commotion she’d been a part of last night.
So Steve called her out for an early dinner, picked her up as if taking her out on the town, and sat her down in a booth at the diner. Steve was fond of the diner, liked the way that it hadn’t really changed very much in the last sixty or seventy years.
“You’re probably just about ready for all this to be over,” he noted as they settled down.
